Veterans, especially Vietnam Vets, are a special kind of tough. I have a friend who had his left leg blown off in Vietnam, and he is wheelchairbound. He doesn't have a car, but he has a job, and could easily afford one at this point. Still, every day at 8 AM, I see him while I go to class, riding down the side of the road in his wheelchair so he can go to work for the Newspaper. I've asked him if he needs help with anything and if he wants a ride, but he simply says "If I can't do this on my own, what can I do? I think I will do this, to prove to myself I can." He's definitely got an interesting mentality, and will not let me help him, so I just take him out to dinner and/or lunch at an old country kitchen down the road that one of his squadmates used to own before he passed. Tough sons of guns, they are. Mad respect for them.
Same type of mentality I had after an injury & surgery couldn’t drive for 1.5 years. Refused to let my family or friends drive me around unless I paid them for their time & they were free anyways. Didn’t want to be a burden to anyone, I guess almost like a pride thing. It made life much harder but I could live with myself as a result. Now I can move around on my own, can drive. I guess it’s just a dignity thing, I didn’t wanna be treated like a child that had to be taken care of
Talk about a badass, yo. He just _would not_ leave those men behind.
Massive respect, Roy.
check out Leo Major
Roy was legendary but Leo's own exploits are out of this world; dude survived mines, a phosphorous grenade from an encounter with SS, single-handedly captured hundreds of POWs and liberated an entire town all by himself and that was just WW2, he served in Korea as well and achieved what an entire US regiment could not with only a handful of men
@@xGoodOldSmurfehx Nah, Roy's badass.

This comment is underrated a lot very much.

Mr. Terry: the history teacher we all wish we had
Never underestimate the value of what history teachers can give. Maybe we don't have to relive it.
12:46 the phrase you are looking for is "man literally to angry to die!"
Doctor: you’ll never walk again
Roy: the hell I won’t
I have said often that I was very proud to have even served in the same army as Roy Benavidez. It was unbelievable what he did and that he survived.
I was in SF and MACVSOG and must point out something. The helicopter pilots and crew were as heroic as I can imagine. Door gunners could at least shoot in firefights. But the pilots had to fight ALL NORMAL REACTIONS to fly into a hot LZ and WAIT. Against all instincts to fight or flee, they waited.
Every few months, when I start feeling sorry for myself for inconsequential nonsense, I rewatch this video, nut up and carry on
Roy Benavidez was an amazing man. Watch videos of the man when he was alive. A humble God fearing man that was a simple loving man. His daughter recently received his actual green beret and name tag from another veteran.
It's amazing to see how your channel has grown so much. I remember stumbling upon your channel and thinking, "why dont this guy have more subscribers" and whoop de doo. Congratulations, Mr Terry!
I've been around since ~1000
Roy is a true American badass. Nothing but respect for him.
I'm fairly certain Audie Murphy was at the pearly gates to welcome him.
Spartan265 except he didnt need to be there.
@Samuel Door He was U.S. born and raised.
@Queso he just said he was US born, he was not a Mexican, he may have had Mexican heritage but he'd considered himself very much an American

He died in 1998, the first thing I thought was, "what could have possibly killed this man at 63?"
(Diabetes and respiratory problems, apparently)

Wannysek KEEPS THEIR ECHO FROM THE PAST
@@Jaydakin it was only a matter of time before sabaton was cited under terrys videos
@@Wanys123 SHOUT! FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!
Maybe Terry could do a double reaction. First simple history video and then sabaton song.
My uncle was a door gunner with the Seawolves (Navy Hueys that operated from riverine ships) doing medevac, search and destroy, and seal team insertions/extractions, he survived his aircraft getting shot down 3 times , lots of crazy stories and your right in that terrain it was extremely difficult to make safe landings where they were needed most especially with so much of the fighting being in the jungle.
What an amazing person. Doctors said he wouldn’t walk twice, and he proved them wrong. Wonder if their’s a movie about this guy? Probably wouldn’t be as cool as the real thing, but it’d still be awesome!
This has to be one of the greatest bad asses in world history. Why isn't there a movie about him?
They don't make a lot of people that tough anymore
You should react to the one on Simo Häyhä 'The White Death' (World’s Deadliest Sniper) and perhaps follow that up with Potential history's "The Winter War: The War That Became A Meme
"
There were far deadlier snipers in history than Simo
@@DanEraser I really don't see how this adds any value.
Shiraume im just saying that calling Simo the deadliest sniper in history is false
@@DanEraser Firstly, when making such a claim at least have something to back it up with. Secondly, calm your e-peen my guy, it literally just copy-pasta'd the title of the video.

May I suggest a reaction to Simple history battle for castle itter. It is a battle that I believe doesn't get much love but shows the difference between the Wehrmacht and the SS and what they fought for.
I've heard about Green Berets carrying captured AKs since they were more reliable for the jungle, so it wouldn't be too crazy if the team that needed rescue were using them.
On my birthday you react to one of my favourite Simple History videos? Man, I love this channel even more.
This is the song " the ballad of the green berets " is based on
Yes! Glad to see you do this video! The Man Who Was In Three Armies and Desmond Doss, the Medic Who Fought Without A Weapon by Simple History is good too. Love your show, thanks!
We had an extra class in social studies so we decided to do some topics on the Vietnam war.
(I'm Canadian.)
It was so bad for the Vietnamese when they tried to flee the country, after a while other nations like Malaysia wouldn't accept them and their makeshift boats would sink.
Several groups would come forward and sponsor Vietnamese refugees/immigrants, fifty thousand (I believe) actually came over and it was the first major non European immigration wave to Canada.
A lot of parallels can be seen in places like Syria today. Not just in the war itself (although partly) but similar in terms of how they are trying to get over and how people's sentiments are more so wavering to help them immigrate.
On an unrelated note, I think I'd like to see you react to/just talk about something related to Hiroshima and or Nagasaki, it's (for personal reasons) an event where after we were taught in a lot of detail what occurred and told several stories I had to just leave school that day. I didn't even do that for the holocaust stuff that showed real footage of the aftermath.

Old man is a GB and was stationed at Ft Devens in 1980. Mountain man and unfortunately had an accident...80' retired and not expected to ever walk again. 41 years later he is upright and has 27 horses and a college degree in history just to do it. Hell of a man.

I just think back to one of dad's stories from Vietnam. His interpretor/girlfriend were planning on visiting some Buddha statue the next day. Until her mother told them "Tommorow is not a good day to go." 🤨
Next day the place was bombed by Vietcong. 🤔😲 The implications. Just wow.
In an interview he said he spat because he couldn't talk from the broken jaw and his eyes were glued shut from dried blood. Also couldn't move from all the injuries. spitting was all he could do.

theres also a story of a dude who was in war for longer than he needed to be.
it wasnt until a few years later he heard the war was over and he was like really?
9:50 no the ak was from the 9 other guys that joined them. the cdiag or something.
The use of traps is a really strong aspect of that whole area. The ancient Khmer were and others from the area were very proficient in their use and the Vietnamese likely brought the techniques when the migrated to the area.
When you see your teacher has a youtube channel
Sometimes the Americans used AK's as well, they were more reliable then the M16 of the day
Don't remember much of the story but I heard about I think it was a group of US Army Rangers during D-Day that had to I think take a battery of artillery or something. They fought for so long against so many enemies they ran out of ammo for their weapons and began using German weapons. Reinforcements finally arrived and almost fired upon the ones they are reinforcing cause they was hearing German small arms fire.
Though take it with a grain of salt as I don't remember the story very well.
@@ILYSNAF considering how often I do this in games, I can see this story being true. Use the enemies guns, you can't run out of ammo until you're dead or the mission's over.
@@halflife2fun Yeah I imagine in most situations where your out of ammo you grab what's closest to you. Could be a fallen enemies rifle or could unfortunately be one of your own fellow soldiers.
The unit Benavidez was in at the time, MACVSOG, allowed using any weapon or gear. The small teams would go in "sterile." . Meaning: no dog tags, no rank, nothing identifying you as American. So any weapon was your choice. And SF had courses for many guns from other countries to allow you to be proficient in any weapon you may have gotten your hands on. How to fire it, reload it, clean it, disassemble or repair it.
Roy was thee closest thing we had in this world to a real Call of Duty Modern Warfare main character you could imagine. Yes history is full of heroes but good goddam this was definitely one of them.
Great upload! 👏🏻
They need to make this a movie
I thought being the guy carrying a flame thrower was the highest casualty rate.
Its obvious that this guy was one or the inspiration for Rambo
Maybe "The Soldier Bear" from Simple history :)
Keep up the good work👍🏻👍🏻 much love from Hawaii
I heard you ask if this guy is Rambo... funny thing is.. this is the person the character "Rambo" was inspired from.
Actually the soldiers often switched out their m16 for an AK because the m16 jammed easier.
Can you react to “Battle of Midway, Told from the Japanese Perspective” Mr. Terry?
Is there a part 2 yet?
no i dont think there is a part 2 yet
No bullets fly sabaton history. Its definitely a story that should be heard as it shows there are good people on both sides of war
They might have done that because the m16 jammed they always seemed to jam because the fire stock was made out of plastic and also the thick mud
There's actually a bit of back story to how army procurement fuck with the M-16 because how much they hated it but one of the main reasons for rhe earlier M-16 reliability issues was that they issued out of spec ammo to the troops to try and save money.
Every American should know who MSGT. Roy Benavidez was. He should be on our money, specifically the 100 dollar bill. The number at which the doctors stopped counting his wounds. Everyone knows Rambo, Iron man, and don't forget Katlynn Jenner. The heroes of the Vietnam war were not celebrated, they were denigrated and forgotten, including Tango Mike Mike. When confronted w/ an obstacle in training they cannot negotiate, or in critical straits during combat, thus in dire need of indominable courage, strength, and determination, every Special Forces candidate at Fort Bragg is taught to bellow Tango Mike Mike. Roy's callsign. It stood for THAT MEAN MEXICAN (however the third M is in dispute).
I challenge YOU, Mr. Terry, as a teacher of history, to undo some of the wrong that befell men like MSGT. Benavidez. Who didn't ask to fight in an unpopular war, they just went, b/c they saw it as THIER duty. No different than today, or during WWII. History has unjustly forgotten these men, their staggering valor, their sacrifice, their honor. Other than the precious value of human life, what does Roy teach us? Always check for booby traps, and most important, NEVER QUIT.
De Oppresso Liber!
Wow. Beautiful
well, they kick every single enemy ass, but their people kick their own ass as well ( right now )
My grandfather was a tunnel rat and combat engineer. He rarely said anything but ik he was at Hamburger hill and plenty of firefights idk how he made it
Also his father in law who I never met also did 5 tours as a green beret in Vietnam and joined the army right after ww2. He was in Korea as well but that’s all ik about him
Please check out a video done by American Battlefield Trust called The Civil War: Animated Battle Map. Seems like one of the only topics not covered here and this is a great video
Mr Terry idk if you knew about this but Americans in Nam were getting rid of their m14s since they weren't suitable for the terrain and took ak47s but got killed by friendly fire since they heard the distinctive sound. Which was more reason for armalite to make their ar15 and m16 designs
Thanks for the extra info!
he jumped 50 feet to the ground from the chopper
Could react to Leo major he’s a Canada who did crazy thing in ww 2 and the Korean War
I already knew about this guy's story but this is a good example of absolute 0 fucks given. This guy did not care about self preservation, he set up one goal for himself and wouldn't stop until he reached it or died doing so.
You should react to first the Sabaton song about Larry Thorne then watch the oversimplified video on him. The song is called The Soldier of Three Armies. Oversimplified have actually covered a lot of stories that Sabaton have done (in a rather familiar order, mmmmm wonder what’s up with that). But both all of the songs a oversimplified videos are amazing!!! It would definitely be worth while
The names Rambo, Juan Rambo
This is my first time watching one of your videos. I was wondering, since you are a history teacher, is any of this taught in school? Do you use this information in your classes?
what amazes me is how he didn't bleed out from all those injuries like how???

Mostly because nobody in the US actually wanted this war. It was purely the government looking for war profits.

Simple history man of three armies is a good one very interesting worth a watch.
Please please PLEASE React to ww2 memoirs (which ever one you feel)... its ww2 veterans being interviewed about their time in service. (Its about 10 mins per video)
Edit 1: Perhaps do the latest one that was made where they interviewed a german soldiers perspective, that way people know/ see that the "enemy" wasn't necessarily always the "enemy", but a soldier whose job it was, was to protect himself and his fellow comrades to survive: just like the allies in the war.
Pls do more simple history
I would give up immedietly. No way i could do anything under enemy fire.

This is not a reaction video recommendation, but more of a video topic recommendation:.
Have you seen "Inglourious Basterds"?, Yes, the Quentin Tarantino movie. If so, you should watch it and do an analysis/commentary vlog about how those events would've changed human history. It doesn't need to be that detailed, if you just especulate and talk about it it would be freaking awesome. Love your videos, btw :)
This story reminds me of Simo Häyhä who was known as the white death by the red army.
