  • This video is a companion to the publication Chording to the Consort (available from Amazon and to download from Sheet Music Plus). It is designed to help players learn the harmony lines to the pieces, and to play them with confidence.
You will hear the Alto line 2 on its own with chords and percussion, with the melody line added on repeats. The final repeat includes the other harmony lines, but the alto line is panned separately in the stereo mix. The performance starts with a percussion beat introduction to set the tempo. I hope this video is helpful.
The performance is by the Ensemble du Midi, who are not sadly a group of talented musicians from the south of France, but are a bit more local (living in the sound card of my computer). They are a bit wooden in their performance style, lacking in dynamics, articulation and expression, but at least they play the right notes at the right time. If I ask them to play crumhorns they will insist on playing saxophones, so instrumentation has been limited to mainly recorders and strings (although the viol player does tend to use too much vibrato in my opinion!) What you play the part on is totally up to yourself. A live performance will always be better, so please find some fellow musicians and together your results should be a lot more fun and enjoyable to listen to.
