He is trying to rekindle a romance that not only never existed at all for her in the past but there is still no possibility of starting one now. And even after she makes an excuse and leaves, he believes there was/is something there. As the chorus says, a fool sees what he believes and no wise man can talk him out of it.

Yes, agreed. I like some other reactors, but sometimes I think they're more interested in watching themselves talk than listening to the music. Two minute intros are too long.
I also think that Lex is a rare bird; she has maximum intuition. I like the pairing with Brad, because he is as left-brained as she is right-brained.
Whenever you listen to Michael McDonald, lyric videos are your best friend, lol! Basically this is a story of two people who used to know each other...maybe dated but hadn't seen one another for years. He was always madly in love with her and tries to reminisce about the great times they had together and is fool enough to believe there's still hope that they can be together but she's not into him anymore now than she was then so she exits as quickly and as nicely as possible but he's going to keep believing.

Alight Brad, let me hook ya up. The song is about a guy who knew a girl or perhaps was in a brief relationship with her and runs into her again years later. In his mind he's thinking they can kindle or re-kindle something, but in her mind she's just trying to get away from him. "She had a place in his life. He never made her think twice...As she rises through her apology, anybody else would surely know.....He's watching her go..... What a fool believes." The parts you were having difficulty understanding. "What a fool believes, no wise man has the power to reason away. What seems to be, is always better than nothing....Than nothing at all... what a fool believes." So, he's just not getting the hint. Refuses to accept it.

HUGE hit even if it only held the #1 spot for one week. Yep, totally late disco, 7th grade, roller rink, boombox on the beach classic. Pretty much everyone loved this song.
But the lyrics and meaning is only appreciated by someone much older who has lost at relationships.

Punctuation is important here. The key phrases are "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away" and "What seems to be is always better than nothing."
Translated, that means, "There's no point trying to reason with a deluded fool. He sees what he wants to see, and you'll never convince him that he's wrong. But hey, maybe he's HAPPIER with his delusion. For a lonely fool, a fantasy love may be better than no love at all."
The song itself is telling a story of a woman who briefly meets a man she knew long ago. PERHAPS they had gone out a few times, or perhaps he was a casual acquaintance who loved her from afar. Either way, that man has always been madly in love with her, but she hasn't even thought about him in years.
He approaches her and tries to reminisce about old times. She smiles politely, then makes a fast, phony apology ("Whoa, look at the time! I have to be going, but it was great to meet you- we must get together again real soon. Bye") and leaves.
Any smart, sane person would see that she wants nothing to do with him, and that she just left him flat. But he's so blinded by love, he tells himself there's still hope, and that she may yet fall in love with him.
This is a wonderfully written song, the build up to the chorus is fantastic and Michael McDonald was born to sing it...one of the great pop tunes of all time.
I freakin LOVE Michael McDonald the vocalist on this one. He’s a legend and icon in music. So many songs you’ve heard are probably written by him loll. I can listen to him sing me the newspaper

There were a lot of jams back in the 70's and in the "disco era" that were soul, funk, rock & pop that were played in the clubs, but the jams themselves were not of the "disco genre" and many people made the mistake of "lumping them all together" and calling it all disco when in reality it wasn't all "disco." Such is the case with this song...
Most certainly not Disco but The Smooth West Coast Sound of the late 70's early 80's. Bands like Ambrosia, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Toto, Boz Skaggs perfected the sound.
This song always brings a tear to my eye. My uncle (dad's brother) first introduced me to the Doobies when I was little feller, way back in the spring of 1980. He passed away three years ago and they played this song at his funeral during the slide show. I miss him. Love you guys!

Hey Brad and Lex, the reason why this sounded familiar (specifically the vocals), is because the lead singer is Michael McDonald, who not only sang lead on the Doobie Brothers biggest hits (Takin’ It To The Streets, Minute By Minute, It Keeps You Runnin’, etc), but he had a bunch of solo hits in the 80’s/90’s (ie. I Keep Forgettin’, Sweet Freedom, Love Can Break Your Heart and the killer ballad, I Can Let Go Now), hit songs collaborating with Patti Labelle (On My Own) and James Ingram (Yah Mo B There) and he has done back-up vocals for a TON of artists, including Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins and Christopher Cross. He definitely has one of the most unique soulful voices in the last 50 years.

Yes a very relatable song, when you see something in someone that isn't there. Because the other might try to let them down gently. Getting the signals crossed. Always reminds me of Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber "so your saying there's a chance".

This song was as others mentioned a monster hit.. Written with Kenny Loggins (who covered it on one of his albums) it continued The Doobie Brothers momemtum from the 2 previous albums with McDonald in the lead as he turned the group from pure rock to a soulful groove with his great voice.. Most long-time fans of this band prefer one version or the other but I think both were great... Keep em coming..from either version of this group.. well worth it.. right on reaction..

Kenny actually released his version first then the doobie brothers released there's which was more popular with people. But the rest is right.

I think its the story of a man who meets an old flame that he's never gotten over. While for her it was a brief moment that she moved on from long ago and now means nothing. They have a drink, he wants to reminisce, but she politely apologises and gets up to leave. Never intending to see him again. While he is still in love and deludes himself into thinking their one time relationship can be rekindled. And no wise man can reason his delusion away. It's a touching song for me 'cos I was that fool once.

The Doobie brothers are a great band, even better in concert, I have watched several of you reaction videos, and you guys always make me smile 😊 I grew up in the 60’s & 70’s as a kid and teenager and love this music, I’ve had the pleasure to have been to many many concerts through the years, I haven’t seen you guys react to any ELO ( Electric Light Orchestra ) or Grand funk Railroad, y’all should check them out ! ✌️😊🇺🇸
This song is about a very specific scenario, so it’s hard to access at first hear. Basically, it’s an encounter between a guy who thinks there’s a lot of history and emotional investment in their past relations and a girl who barely remembers him and apologizes and leaves once she picks up on his feelings. He’s too invested to understand the illusion, hence a fool, and he won’t listen to reason about it. MM has one of the all time voices, his ability to maintain tone and warmth climbing the ladder should almost be impossible.
Classic and iconic. IMO, one of the best songs ever written/recorded. It tells a great story and makes you feel what they're feeling. And what a voice.
Just saw the Doobie Brothers 3 weeks ago, and they are still fabulous 50 years later. Not many bands can say that! That lawn was more packed our than any other band I've seen!

Essentially a song about a guy who wants to believe that a girl still cares for him - but perhaps with a broader point that "What a fool believes he sees, the wise man has the power to reason away" - perhaps echoing the Simon and Garfunkel Lyric "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest" (from The Boxer).

Michael McDonald became the lead singer for The Doobies in 1975 after the original lead, Tom Johnston, became ill. It was supposed to be a temporary gig, but his work was so good, the band kept him on.
I have a very specific memory of being 5 years old and hearing this song playing in my older sister’s car while she drove me to my first ever movie, which happened to be The Empire Strikes Back.

I am one of those Doobie Bros fans that pretty much checked out during the Michael McDonald era. Nothing against him, he has a unique voice and he's an incredible musician. During his tenure the band got even more popular...so good on them. But I saw them twice before he joined and there was no band that "rocked the house" more then The Doobie Bros. 'Clear As The Driven Snow' (The Captain and Me - 1973) is a pure Doobie Bros jam.
Agree entirely, their early albums with Tom on vocals are all fantastic. Captain and Me a wonderful album, definitely their best.

I never considered this disco. I've heard it on KSHE-95 a thousand times. The doobies are awesome.
By the way. The reason it has personal meaning for me is that I think this story is about an autumn/spring relationship. Which is what I was in when the song came out I was somewhat older than her. She very much did enjoyed listening to my nostalgic stories. And one day I watched her rise to her apology as it was time for her to move on. Sweet woman. She ended up doing quite well in life. And I only miss her once in awhile
This was the first song co-written by Kenny Loggins & Michael McDonald. There’s a great video of them performing it live, as well as their other biggest co-hit This is It. Their voices are incredible together.

Part of the fun of their lyrical interpretations is that they are so off the wall.
Doobies with Michael McDonald (lead singer here) were a very different band than before him. Both versions had big hits and I believe this album was a Grammy winner. Talent guys all around.

I enjoy The Doobie Brothers. They have a great vibe and you can't help but recognize the unique voice of Michael McDonald. They have a pretty good catalog of music. Suggest songs Long Train Runnin', Listen to the Music, Takin' it to the Streets, and Minute by Minute. Enjoyed the reaction!

Good line to sum the dynamic is the line "He tried to recreate what had yet to be created" he foolishly believed that they had at one time had a relationship. She never considered him as having a place in her life. If he was wise he would have realized this, but what a fool beieves he see's.

This is a fantastic song. One of my favorites. The harmonies are soooo tight. That high hat kick on one if the bridges gets me going every time. Michael Donald has the most gorgeous voice.

Even though this is The Doobie Brothers 2.0 I still enjoyed some of their songs. This is quite a departure from say, Blackwater.
