  • In this video, we look at a spooky story which appears in the memoirs of John Rodgers Jewitt, an English blacksmith who was captured by Nootka warriors on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, in the early 1800s.

Thank you, Mr. Peters, as always, for your stellar work! I adore your historical videos and your videos on Native American beliefs very much, as well as your marvelous cryptid projects. It's always an adventure diving into another one of yoAllur videos, and I can't thank you enough.
In reference to the story portrayed in this video, I feel like remarking that, now and always, we live our lives surrounded by the spirit world. We are never alone, and we are never absolved of the consequences of our actions, barring special dispensations of divine intervention. This is the reality that I live and know, although I realize that to another person my words may seem fanciful or even pretentious. I merely share this truth with others, because I believe that it explains a great deal of the human condition, and it makes life much easier to face and to understand, if you comprehend the truth about the other world, the afterlife, and the divine oneness.
Truth is the only refuge we have.
I feel very sorry for the men who lost their lives needlessly in the story that you've relayed. I feel for the tormented sub-chief as well. It is easy for any of us to wander into fatal error when we fail to understand that we are all one, and that to hurt another is to harm oneself. The white men were exploiting the natives, and the natives understood this. Their violence was a disproportionate reaction, and it brought about great suffering for several of the people concerned. All of human history could be summed up in the deeds and the lessons of that one sad story.
Apologies for rambling! Thanks again! All the best, N.

    Thank you Hammerson.
Let me begin by saying that I do not have all the answers. but I can assert that such things as ghosts can, and do, exist. That's not to say that every person who claims to have witnessed a ghost is either telling the truth or correct in their claim. When only one person claims to be seeing a ghost that no one else can witness, we should be skeptical as to the veracity of the claim. It could be a lie, an hallucination, brain damage or some mental illness. However, when said ghost manipulates, or otherwise moves physical objects around them, and that two or more people witness, all the while at least one person is in contact with the spirit of the deceased, then we can be certain that something paranormal is happening.
Furthermore, you can experience a ghost without seeing one, but by hearing or feeling them. I have had such strange fortune on three occasions. In two of these occasions the ghosts were spirits of recently deceased family members who had come to bid me farewell. On the last occasion it was the parents of a close friend who had been dead for several years. On two of these the dead moved objects around, or manipulated them, in this world. Spooky indeed.
Be careful what you wish for.

The British, the Americans and the Spaniards arrived to Nootka Island. The naturalist of the spanish expedition, Mariano Mociño, described the *Matlox,* which was a large wild creature living in the woods. 🦍👣. Which was imposible to classify.

I have this image flooting in my head, and I can't remember if it actually comes from a description in your Wendigo video, or if I dreamt it up myself when i fell asleep to said video.
Something about a merchant (fur trader?) witnessing an execution of a native man condemded afflicted by the Wendigo curse, who had killed and cannibalized a family member.
(Content warning: next bit is graphic )
He was stoned to death by his tribe, on a rocky sea shore, the tribe throwing rocks for a day and a night, until the was only a pool of blood in the shallow water, among the black rocks. I picture that beach, black stones jutting out of the water, the natives standing in ankle deep, blood red waters, exhausted, sweat steaming from their bodies, in a bitter cold autum sunset.
Did i get that from your channel??
Either way, thank you for a great channel, what a treasure of history, delivered with superb production and narration.
    Cheers from Denmark!❤

That's a horrifying image. I've never told a story like that, although I have described historical native Wendigo executions. Although there is a sort of equivalent on the West Coast (which I hope to make the subject of a future video), the Wendigo belief is really a creature of the interior, namely the northern forests, the northern prairie, and the Canadian Shield.

Interesting, that account of the native with apparent mental health issues. I suppose it could've been paranormal, but I suspect he took an earlier head injury that went on to manifest as PTSD-induced psychosis. But, who knows?
After all, even experts at the fore of neuroscience today know very little about the true function/capacity of the human brain.
Interesting video, as ever. I do prefer this narrator, I must say. Thanks for sharing your endeavours.
