Runescape's NEW Boss Isn’t What We Expected

- #oldschoolrunescape just announced their next group boss - The Hueycoatl. This dragon/snake/viva-piñata looking thing has some real potential but the Runescape community were less than excited about some of the rewards that come with it.
The Duelling Wand (an earth-based 3 tick powered staff), the Tome of Earth and Prayer Regeneration potions.
This will all come in future rollouts of Varlamore's expansion (if it passes the polls and player scrutiny first).

*UPDATE* - Jagex have done a full 360 on the duelling wand. It will no longer have a 3 tick option, it will cast spells on the normal spellbook AND have the dragonbane effect. The boss is confirmed to be classified as a dragon & yes, you were all right, it was never a charged weapon! :)

@ScriticRS or maybe you are actually correct and Jagex originally always had it as a dragonbane wand in original planning and what you reported was the first 180....

I honestly think it's super strange, offering an early-mid game reward from a boss that will mostly be killed by people that have already gone through their mid-game. How many people will it even benefit at 90+ CB? As you said, there's already better options for those people.
Also, I'm failing to see how it would be better than any other staff with the tome when fighting against things weak to Earth (perhaps they're not intended to be paired together?).
I guess we will wait and see for the final product. The only nice thing about it for me is the damage boost, acting as a stop gap before people can afford higher-boosting staves. Not sure why they made it 3-tick, also not sure why we need another damn powered-staff.

I'd like a different main reward from this boss then a niche mid tier magic weapon. It'd be nice to keep the rune saving effect idea and apply it to an item to go into the ammo slot to save runes on casts (10% rune saving?) only for combat spells in the standard spellbook. That would promote using the standard spell book to take advantage of elemental weaknesses by lowering costs.
Fully agree, these can't be the only rewards, otherwise it will be lame and probably dead content within a month.
Honestly I'm just excited to have an easier group boss that you can do with a group, feels like most group bosses atm are pretty endgame so it would be nice to have an easier boss you can actually go to as a group and get that classic MMORPG feeling. Also the dwarves thing is awesome
I haven't done most bosses in the game. My skill and willingness to learn mechanics simply is not there. I have the gear and levels, but bossing just isn't for me. I'd probably do this one if it's not too crazy. But I'll probably skip it too since I am a solo player.
@@SaramadHillbro learn bossing it’s fun you’re missing out I am a nearly maxed ironman and I’d quit if I couldn’t boss, also things like wintertodt and tempoross are technically bosses and done in a group, or like raiding usually has to be done in a group unless you’re really good at mechanics
Isn’t the staff more like a god staff? Where it’s required to cast the spell, but the spell is still in a spellbook.

It's not. The spell is exclusive to the wand, unlike magic dart

The Dueling Wand is not a powered staff like the trident, it's a staff with an associated spell, like Iban's Staff with Iban's Blast or the God staves with their respective spells.
Also, since it's not a powered staff, the Dueling Shot would be useable in PvP as well.

Seems about accurate to me. 90 combat is all combat skills level 70 with 75hp and 70 prayer.
Weapon seems pretty decent for a player with level 70 mage to me.
I think if they are really concerned, they can just make it so you can't bring the prayer enhance in to inferno. You already can't bring in purple sweets, not that much different imo.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the wand is not charged. The special spell sounds like it will be on the standard spellbook like Iban's Blast, so it will still promote use of the standard spellbook like they wanted.
It is indeed a charged weapon that uses a unique earth spell.
@@Retsila01 Are you sure? in the blog post they make a point of specifiying that the spell itself requires 65 magic which is a significant function change from normal charged weapons that makes it sound much more like a spellbook spell.
It’s not charged but it is a built-in/exclusive spell. While it might not have charges it does have an associated cost per spell, akin to a charged staff (but while taking up an additional inventory space) - I get your point though, if it’s on the standard spell book then they’re somewhat achieving a goal but given it’s position as a mid game weapon, does it just make Earth blast & Wave entirely obsolete?
@@ScriticRS If you have the item yes, Earth blast and wave will be effected but they don't require a special weapon.
@@Alucitary My apologies, I must have read the blog wrong. I assumed that the weapon had an inbuilt spell that required charging.
Boss itself seems really fun and cool, but the rewards are a huge miss. An earth tome casting green fire blast doesnt provide different gameplay than a fire tome casting red fire blast. And the wand itself is filling a gap that doesnt exist? You can easily have an accursed scepter by the time you are doing this boss. Potion itself seems cool, I'd use it, but why is it not from the Herblore activity presumably coming the same update? The whole rewards scheme here just doesn't land for me.
I love group content and want more group bosses, but I'm not sure how they expect this boss to stay popular/groupable if youre asking 4 people to split a 500k drop.
I really think the entire elemental weakness rebalance is unnecessary. Why does the standard spellbook need to be a go-to combat spellbook? Ignoring the fact that it already is used for combat in PKing, standard already has a niche of having a ton of very useful teleports and a ton of utility spells. Bringing HA to a long slayer task or bossing trip is relevant and useful. Ancients have the niche of being the primary "combat" spellbook. Lunar has vengeance and spellbook swap. Arceeus has thralls. All 4 see frequent and meaningful use in the game already.

This depends entirely on how the elemental weaknesses are implemented. It may be much better than fire on those weak to earth.
@@_Professor_Oak My point is that changing the elemental weakness so that you are using an earth spell with an earth tome on an earth weak enemy feels the same as a fire spell with fire tome on a fire weak enemy. Its just changing colors, gameplay remains the same

I feel like we’re downplaying the elemental weaknesses aspect of project rebalance. The powered spell of the wand is an earth spell. What is going to be gaining a weakness to earth magic? Metal dragons! This spell combined with the tome of earth, being on slayer task and also the weakness skyrockets this to be the most effective weapon and could make metal dragons a very good task to do. All this said I didn’t think about how it draws people

I’m actually excited for the rewards the earth tomb is gonna be so nice to make house tele tabs can save two types of runes instead of waiting to 90 plus slayer to kill dust devils for dust staff and I can see why they made it weaker than ibans prob to help combat the power creep for every new item that comes out who knows it might be even easier to get than ibans or it might have better scenarios where it’s preferred over ibans it’s hard to say until it releases but I’m am honestly so damn hyped about that earth tome!
Love a solo group boss. Might do it in the GIM where I stand alone together.

its seem kinda crazy we're getting RS3's prayer renewals as a group content drop. Those things are so convenient for afk slayer, let alone what it could do at wave based bossing. Really hoping they pull a zulrah and spread out the materials for those if they're coming in with this.
They keep hurting skilling when they do this though. They can use this to bring some of the value back over. Get a few people talking in the flax fields and such. Might even help drive a few prices up.

You gotta make the different playstyles intertwine economically. Their gathering gets you what you need for the mats, and your drops that you split that they buy is why they gather it and why you don't have to.
Some of us just wanna cut wood at work all day instead of being forced to raid more often then we want to keep the bank roll.
They also will add the pot of aggressiveness with the varlamore herblore minigame if it passes the poll
Technically, they didn't say it was 3-8 players. The blog post said you can play with 3-8 FRIENDS
...which means you'll actually be playing this solo.

its not a "built in spell".
Its not a charged staff. Its a spell on the standard spellbook. The staff just has the benefit of casting that spell at 3 tick compared to other ways to cast it. Its similar to Ibans / Slayer Dart / God Spells but it doesn't *require* the staff to do, its just improved and made relevant with it.
It will be useful at dragons, as they are earth weak, but you can't use the tome without super antifire pots, because of antifire protection.
It needs to be stronger so its actually a niche for dragon / earth-weak monsters. Otherwise its insta-dead the moment you're like... low 80s in magic and just get a trident (which is dirt cheap for mains and doesn't need a tome and is about same price to use).
An iron won't likely grind the boss for Wand + Tome + Pages for this short time of use.
Roger, so like Ibans blast/slayer dart like you say. The issue I take is that it fits a very small, extremely niche set of uses. Isn’t it only chromatic dragons that are weak to earth? Does this create a gap in elemental strength to the point where each element needs a magic wand specific to its style? So the point I make is that this doesn’t feel quite reflective a reward from a group boss - where it’s incentive is to attract groups of players to participate. That’s far less likely to happen with such a niche reward.

Perhaps it will shred monsters weak to earth with a 50% boost it may content with big boy weapons

Prayer regen feels really nice in CoX and ToA, i can see why they want to expand the mechanic to the rest of the game. I do think it's likely to be busted though, maybe an untradable one-time-use regen item would be a better drop? At least that way youd have to earn it yourself.
The staff imo is weird. Its worse than ibans, which is much easier to acquire, and massively OP on earth-weak mobs... Idk, im not sold on the elemental weakness (and even less on the ranged type equivalent) reworks, it feels overly complicated and arbitrary to me.

Now they need to allow us to add the elemental tomes / pages to the Mages Book, to make everyone go back to the MTA again and hate themselves.
I can't see why they would introduce a 65 magic req staff that's DPS is below a 50 magic req staff. They are doing project rebalance, yet when releasing things, it seems like they want to create more inbalance and confusion 😂 other rewards sound okay I guess as far as we know
I think they should make this boss impossible to kill with dragonbane melee and range counterparts to make camping this boss more viable with it, and to not fk with the other two...
Also we are nerfing olhm and cox so much now with all 3 combat triangle weapons that will affect dragons :(

honestly I think the weapon would function better if it was a powered staff as opposed to something like the god staffs, ibans or slayer staff...
locking the 3 tick magic weapon to standards means it wont be seen in Nylocas or Baboon rooms or in the inferno or colloseum and will struggle to compete anywhere that a player can use venge or thralls, it'll be good for this boss and mid level slayer when fighting something weak to earth but otherwise its deadge.
personally I think the scope of this boss misses the mark, a big epic fight where you follow a massive monster up a mountain and then showdown with it at the top? that sounds epic as hell, something akin to a raid not something akin to defeating sarachnis. the boss and the rewards really should be kicked up a notch.
I didn’t think about it’s possible use at ToB, might have a really good scenario for it there but your point is absolutely where I’m coming from, rewards are good in their own way but does it feel like it fits with the suggested target audience of 90+ combat or from a group boss? I’m not so sure either, if the rewards aren’t appealing to hordes of players then groups are less likely to form

What if I told you that currently the wand seems weak but when raids 4 comes out, it will be extremely useful as a utility item.

The dueling wand seems a bit overtuned in terms of special effects, but I guess getting it from a 90+ combat boss makes sense.
3 tick speed, that's kind of like a powered staff, boosted by the tome of earth AND has a 30% chance not to consume runes.
Does that mean it casts spells faster??

The prayer regen potion... 66 prayer points per dose seems excessive
granted thats over 8 minutes, so its not too crazy (unless im misinterpreting it and its actually 8mins per 4 doses used (so 2min a dose) then yeah that would be too much, but if its 1 dose for 8 mins then thats nothing too crazy.
We don't need more early game content. We need bridges between Ancient Scepter/Trident of Swamp and even kodai, to Tumekens. Sang isnt enough we need weapons and bosses at all price points that are accessible. We also need a bridge between Fang and Rapier to the Scythe of Vitur, and a bridge between blowpipe and even full crystal (still relatively affordable to decent mains), and Zaryte cbow/Twisted bow. The couple mil-150 mill meta is okay to achieve, but the gap between something like full crystal and a twisted bow is luck +hundreds of hours of grinding.
Those items are expensive because they're BIS. You're never really going to be able to get a bridge between those weapons and the tier below them. If you try to place something above the second tier but below BIS, second tier will just lose value and the new items will take their place

as someone who enjoys 95% of updates... this sounds cool but the items arent really anything worth much. 90 lvl combat recommended for a weapon you could use around like lv 70 cmbt? idk seems out of place for this specific group activity
I just want bosses to stop dropping mass resources killing skilling. Beyond that a niche situational drop or two is nice.

Boss seems cool, but the wand and spell seems useless and prayer renewal pot is just meh. Could be useful but most places won’t even be worth bringing. Also why do they keep making “group” bosses soloable? As an Ironman myself I understand people wanting stuff to be able to be done solo, but the solo is almost always the meta for this stuff, so seems pointless to call it a group boss if you can solo it.
Its better than ibans. Its better than both trident and warped sceptre until like 95 magic with the tome.
