Being a former Army combat veteran ((82nd. Airborne) let me clarify a very important fact: When on the range you bitch about the heavy pull of the trigger. Fine, you're right. But when you are up against a deadly threat that same trigger when pulled feels like a one pound of pull.. Why? ADRENALIN! Enough said.
I had my duty Glock fitted with NY2 trigger, which I believe is 12 LBS for that exact reason. It will have to be a deliberate intentional action to fire the gun.

The best review I have seen so far for this gun. Breaks it down well for those looking for a self defense gun that is reliable, affordable, and American. Not an M&P, not trying to be an M&P. It holds it's own. Proud owner of an SD40VE. 500+ rounds with no malfunctions what so ever.
I'm a former USAF combat veteran. Just bought one of these and shot it today. Used but almost new. One factor regarding a 10lb trigger is the adrenaline factor. Entering a gunfight is a traumatic situation and the last thing you want is a hair trigger.
Just picked one up today, says 8lb trigger pull and Apex has a trigger if you want it lighter. Smith&Wesson said Apex makes them and it should work. I haven't looked for the trigger yet, but says it fits the original SD and should work for the SD VE.
Love this gun! Handles great , hight capacity, and always always reliable. I paid $270 at the gun show for it, this is the gun at low price high quality. MUST HAVE for home defense

Thank you for a great video!!!!!!! I have the SD9VE and it has been totally flawless. Based on your video, I will be purchasing the SD40 VE!!!! Great job !!!! Thanks,
I love my sd40. Bought it for $299 at Academy. Upgraded the plastic guide rod to steel. The front white dot sight fell off within the first 250 rounds so I upgraded to fiber optic. Lastly I added a trigger kit. Reduced trigger pull from 8 to about 5.5lbs. Looks and feels great. No FTD, FTF or any other problems.
Had some range time with my new sd 40 ve. It shoots Great with no miss fires, the accuracy was very nice just hold on for the recoil. I would class this gun as a reliable carry gun.
Just bought one of these yesterday and read so many reviews both good and bad. Watching this video really got me to see that it’s actually gonna turn out to be a good purchase 💯
I dont see how anybody can hate. I just bought one a month ago and I already feel confident shooting it and I have shot glocks that had more kick. The heavy trigger I personally love for a gun that does not feature a safety(just makes me less nervous when its riding in my concealed holster) the grip really gets a bite in your hand that I find Ideal. I'm impressed overall with mine and it is everything I thought I was gonna get for the 350 bucks I spent. I believe smith and wesson delivered!
+2improper I just ordered true glow bright sight from Amazon for 107.00 I don't really like the 2 white dot sites on it 🤔 other then that really like the feel of, very controlling and likening the 8lbs trigger pull.. I was looking at other vids stating that it does lighten up a bit after 100 rounds
Bought mine a year ago, about 200-300 rds through it, no worries. Love it. It's what I learned on and it is by my side almost always. Nice review and I'm glad you were able to put the use of the SD40 in perspective.
Won this gun at a gun bash on a $3 raffle ticket and love this gun it's my favorite gun that I own light weight fires beautifully trigger reset could be better almost have to take it all the way back to the start but I love it period and if u can shoot then you would never blame the gun
this gun hasn't given me any issues, its right up there at about 3,000 rounds with my glocks. you mentioned you have a nano, I had major FTF issues and I used different brands of ammo. got rid of it
Could not have said it better! I just purchased the 9mm version of this firearm and it has been amazing. I have nothing wrong to say about this firearm. Excellent review.
I couldn't agree more with this review and point of view... Value Value Value is what this gun and its 9mm counterpart is all about. I bought one for $305.00 and when I took it out to shot, I was Truly impressed. It shot right on target with no misfires or misfeeds after 500 rounds. I thought I made a great buy. I was at a gun shot here in SD and the Gun Gods were on my side that day. Another show attendee came up along me talking to a merchant wanting to sell his SD40 VE. He was into image and felt the gun was subpar. The dealer didn't want to buy it for more than $200.00 and the guy walked away. So I approached him and we agreed on $265.00. The gun was hardly shot. I since have replaced the springs with the kit from Galloway Precisions. If you have trouble installing the sear replacement spring, try installing it from the top rather than the bottom as everybody does it. New springs makes it even better. I couldn't find FO sights for the VE version so I took a Sharpee Marker and colored the front sight red and green in the rear. This reviewer is right about it not being a CZ75B or Kimber but for the money the value is fantastic and suggest everyone go out and buy one or two of these.. Have fun, be safe and TEACH YOUR CHILDREN GUN SAFETY.
I own a sd40ve and I love it. it uses to jam, but took a fingernail file to the ejector, so the shell goes in and out a little easier, didn't really remove any metal on it.just smoothed it up alittle,no problems anymore.
Hey enjoyed the review !! I am purchasing this gun in 9mm and was a little disappointed watching some reviews on the tube . My primary purpose in buying this gun is self defense and I do believe I won't have any trouble with the heavy trigger pull. Considering I typically shoot a air rifle every day with about a 12 lb trigger pull after around three years later I shot an 1911 pistol with around a 5.5 lb trigger . Much to my surprise it felt like a hair trigger in comparison. But I agree with your analogy of the purpose of the trigger design , only time will tell .
Picked up mine on a Thursday put 100 rds of cheap ammo through it on saturday. No problems. And i had no problem squeezing thst trigger with pretty good accuracy. Meaning at 25yds i was hitting my paper man target in the chest. Which is accurate enough for me. Love my sd40ve it feels great in my hand. It felt better in my hand than the my buddies glock which i shot as well. He felt the same way and he's a big glock guy. Will be doing a few upgrades. But uts perfect out of the box!
After handling many pistols I chose the SD40 VE. I liked the grips and the balance of this pistol. The slide was smooth and easier to handle than many other guns. It's an amazing price for those needing a self defense weapon. Got mine at Bass Pro.
Great vid! This was my first semi!!! I love it...ur right about the sight dots...they popped out (actually 1 and 1/2) after about 300 rounds. It has a M&P look but then again the serrations come in and it’s an M&P... Anyway! Keep it up, Dude you have my attention!
i have one and the trigger is great once youve owned it and shot it for a good year. you get so used to it that it doesnt make a difference any more. mine has only had one failure in a year and thats because i may have let it get a little dirty. when kept clean it shoots as good as any other 40 ive shot with less failures and equal aim
I too like the grip angle on this beauty. its my first personally owned piece. I like the trigger pull. kinda what sold me in the first place. Great Vid. Thanks
This is my duty carry for my security job. The "hard" trigger was part of the selling point to me. It is about like a DA pull in a revolver and without a magazine safety or external safety it is as close to a DA revolver is I could buy. After 100 rounds for familiarization I qualified with this gun with the first 40 rounds I fired. (The rangemaster miss counted and thought I had all 50, and then refused to let me fire ten more. What can I say, you can't argue with the rangemaster unless you are as dense as a rock.) Good gun, good price, my recommendation for anyone wanting a pistol to count on.
I got my SD40VE for $281 shipped to my local dealer. I just wanted to experiment with a low cost, but quality brand new defensive handgun. This gun is half the price of any Glock. Not everybody can afford $500+ for a handgun. This gun is a great value for the money. The truth is that it only cost about $100 to manufacture a Glock. So this gun is the same quality as the more expensive models and still allows S&W to make a profit, and offer a fine defensive gun to the public at a good price. I could easily live with this gun as my only defensive handgun if I had to. Fortunately I don't have to. If you want all of the bells and whistles, get a S&W M&P or Glock. If cash is tight, get the SD40VE or SD9VE, and sleep well at night.
I have the 40 and I have the M&P and let me say on my honest opinion, I like the 40 better. It has a little more kick, it's lighter, the trigger is just about the same. Oil your gun, and break it in, and I guarantee you will prefer the 40. Plus right now, the ammo is cheaper and easier to find in this pandemic.
This was the best review of the SD series Smith and Wesson. I knew about the sd trigger and what it was made for. I hope this review give some type of clarity to the people who are stuck in brands that firearms have different types of uses.
I heard from the guy that works at my local gun store that Smith & Wesson have to pay royalties to glock for every SD40 and SD9 that are sold. My friend and I just ordered a couple of SD40s for ourselves, we were just talking about how cool it will be If they had sequential serial numbers. We have to wait 10 days for them since we are in California. Don't even get me started on their gun laws...... Lucky for you you live in a more free part of this country.
Douglas Zugnoni Yeah.. I'm glad to be here.... I think of you guys dig down hard enough on your politicians you can get somewhere.... I hope you do. Excellent about those SD's!!!
I'm a Ruger guy, but the M&P 40 Shield dragged me into S&W territory.. Had a chance on this one at a pawn shop, can't wait to get it out! Thanks for the vid!
good review: i had one of the oldest sigmas on the planet, and I bought it used...it worked flawlessly for me, and I carried it a lot for duty...then alas, I got bit by the glock bug...but me being me, what comes around goes around. i can't beat the price on this weapon system!! so, I'm thinking about picking up an sd, before they vanish from commie-fornia...either that or I move from the worlds largest prison camp. again, good video. keep up the good work. semper fi, carry on!!
I didn’t care for the rear sights. S W sent me new sights for the mp they fit and they have a set screw to tighten them holding them in place. Good job well done.
You hit the nail on the head. This isn't a competition gun or a pocket pistol. Its for self defense so it makes a great car gun or home gun. think mine is a great gun for its price. It's eats everything except Tulammo Brass Maxx. It's my nightstand gun and I have full confidence in it.
I just purchased one of these from my local gun shop. I haven't shot it yet. The trigger is very stiff and I hope it gets better over time. I plan on using it in my position as church security. I had a little Ruger LCPll .380 for my own personal defense, but needed something larger and more accurate for carrying to church. I've ordered a green laser/flashlight combo to mount under the barrel.
Thanks for the very informative video. I have a SD9VE and love it. No issues, and very well built. I agree with your explaination of what a civilian self defense handgun is. Its to bad that a lot of the narrow minded Glocktards can't understand that. This is not a service weapon(but with some upgrades and practice...it can be) at half the cost.
completely agree. The thing is: Guns are like cars, kind of. YES...a Mercedes is a nicer car than most..... but if a Ford will get you there at 1/3 of the cost, even though its not designed as a luxury brand, it'll still get you there. The same can be said for guns!
I bought me a sw mp40c, that is a very nice gun. does not feel cheap in the hand like my sd40ve. I love both guns, but my compact takes the cake, never had any issues
For sure I want one of those: But I also have the full sized (newer) M&P 9- in comparison I don't get a cheap feel from the SD- but it's definitely a less expensive polymer: but that was the point behind the production of that gun: but hellllls yes- I would LOVE the M&P 40 c
i have my sd40ve for a year now,i have the apex aek trigger and spring kit on mine's this gun has been flawless!the factory trigger was ok but i had a option to make it better and i did!i have under $400 invested in this gun and that's with the apex modifications!
2improper apex trigger and spring kit makes the trigger pull lighter about 5.5 pounds and shortens the trigger travel some you still have a double action pull perfect for self defense and get's rid of the plastic rubbing feeling!i think everything was $70 including shipping!i'm buying the 9mm next and doing the trigger job also!hope this helps anybody!
I bought a 9mm SD, put over 400 rounds with no problems, my Glock 17 n 19 both had hangups and i paid $200 more for them, that makes my SD more reliable.
Sigma and m&p had a baby has the the best of both lines . Im getting my 40 sd after the holidays i carry a 9 sheild and a m&p 45 duty size. Im putting trijicon night sights like my other 2
I only watched two seconds of this video and I can already tell that's a Remington Golden saber 40 Cal round u have there. That's what I have in mind SD 40 ve
I have gotten one but got it in 9mm. My only plans for it is to replace the plastic guide rod with a metal one from Galloway precision. I may put an Apex trigger into it later on. Every review on this one is good.
Very good video and I agree with you about people complaining about the trigger. They need to "man up". More and more I see people who buy a 22 cal and try to kill Water Buffalo and then spend 45 minutes bitching about the 22 cal pistol! As you point out....this is a solid budget self defense pistol.
i have this gun and i bought it off of a friend that never fired it . for the price he bought it for and the price i got it fo ri was a bit skeptical but as a marine and being very hard on weapons it well exceeded my expectations . the sight picture is a litle wierd on mone but once you get used to it this gun rocks . i have had it for about 4 months now with about 750 rounds through it. awesome gun carry it most places
I know I'm late to the party. Just pick one of these second-hand with about four hundred rounds through it Max, it's in new condition and it already has the Apex Trigger spring kit installed and 2 maga $249.99.

i checked you out for this review specifically and thank you for confirming that i should buy it ..had one in my hand today and almost got it .i hope they still have it tomorrow
Did you get it I baught two already
Thank you for a great video!!!!!!!
I have the SD9VE and it has been totally flawless.
Based on your video, I will be purchasing the SD40 VE!!!!
Great job !!!!
Thanks,
Thank you very much Mike! I'm very sure you'll dig that pistol. It does really well with .40 SW.
I’ve heard both sides of the debate about this gun. I own it and I like it.
I haven’t seen this vid in a while!
It’s a very good one! Great music too
Ricky Ramírez Thank you very much! This is one of my first videos. I’m glad you still like it!
Had some range time with my new sd 40 ve. It shoots Great with no miss fires, the accuracy was very nice just hold on for the recoil.
I would class this gun as a reliable carry gun.
superlion617 Yup. The price is what gets me. Such an outstanding piece- for so little money.
Just bought one of these yesterday and read so many reviews both good and bad. Watching this video really got me to see that it’s actually gonna turn out to be a good purchase 💯
oil the slide and trigger spring
I have the S&W SD VE. I love it 🇺🇸💥
I dont see how anybody can hate.
Picked my mine today at Academy for 319.00! Going to check it out next weekend at the range. Super excited!
I'll tell you what: for the price point it really doesn't disappoint!
Just purchased an SD40 and I love it. Im pleased with its performance and how comfortable it feels in my hand
Thank you for this post it answered the questions I had and yes I bought one. Please keep up the good work.
Thank you Ken!
Bought mine a year ago, about 200-300 rds through it, no worries. Love it. It's what I learned on and it is by my side almost always. Nice review and I'm glad you were able to put the use of the SD40 in perspective.
Hey Rich!
Thanks for that message! Its a good enough gun to get the word out, and I appreciate your part too!
Won this gun at a gun bash on a $3 raffle ticket and love this gun it's my favorite gun that I own light weight fires beautifully trigger reset could be better almost have to take it all the way back to the start but I love it period and if u can shoot then you would never blame the gun
just got the SD40 2.0 a few days ago great 300 dollar handgun.
This is going to be my next purchase March 16 I hope my shop still has it
I have the SD9VE and I'm going to get the SD40VE next, knowing what I know from my handgun resaeach, I should've brought the SD40VE.
What’s the difference between these 2 ?
@@thealmightyking3686 The SD40VE kick is just a tad bit harder. And if zi knew that I would have gotten that.
I enjoy your review, can't wait to pick mine up next month.
Cryptid Hunter I still stand by my saying it’s one of the best gun values you can get.
Best review hands down salute my boy sd40ve here I come
I bought this pistol a few weeks ago and like it.
Good review. I agree 100%. Great USA-made weapon. Thanks for posting.
I bought the 9mm first liked it so much went back and got the 40. SD 9/40 VE rocks.
I'm telling ya! I love that thing!
this gun hasn't given me any issues, its right up there at about 3,000 rounds with my glocks. you mentioned you have a nano, I had major FTF issues and I used different brands of ammo. got rid of it
This was my first pistol. I switched to an apex trigger but beyond that it is stock. It is a reliable no frills pistol. It will do the job.
Could not have said it better! I just purchased the 9mm version of this firearm and it has been amazing. I have nothing wrong to say about this firearm. Excellent review.
Thank you Carlos! I REALLY appreciate the kind words!!
I love my SD9VE and it always shoots
I Have the 9mm and love it over 1000 rounds and still love it
Hey enjoyed the review !!
It handles the .40 chambering like a champ, too!
After handling many pistols I chose the SD40 VE. I liked the grips and the balance of this pistol. The slide was smooth and easier to handle than many other guns. It's an amazing price for those needing a self defense weapon. Got mine at Bass Pro.
It's a way better gun than its price. You picked a good one!
Great vid!
This was my first semi!!! I love it...ur right about the sight dots...they popped out (actually 1 and 1/2) after about 300 rounds.
It has a M&P look but then again the serrations come in and it’s an M&P...
Anyway! Keep it up, Dude you have my attention!
I have the SD9VE , id bet my life on it with no questions , its is out standing
patriot72114 God given rights I have no doubt whatsoever!
I had the sigma 40 cal , the trigger was terrable. this SD 40 VE is a great firearm, the trugger is not bad, smooth.
sweet gun ..same as i have love it ..n also got the 9mm ..never no problems with them both ...
Well this made up my mind. I'm definitely getting one! Thanks for the great review
i have one and the trigger is great once youve owned it and shot it for a good year. you get so used to it that it doesnt make a difference any more. mine has only had one failure in a year and thats because i may have let it get a little dirty. when kept clean it shoots as good as any other 40 ive shot with less failures and equal aim
I too like the grip angle on this beauty. its my first personally owned piece. I like the
trigger pull. kinda what sold me in the first place. Great Vid.
Erica C. For sure! I see 40 in a lot of places!
This was the best review of the SD series Smith and Wesson. I knew about the sd trigger and what it was made for. I hope this review give some type of clarity to the people who are stuck in brands that firearms have different types of uses.
I bought my SD9 in February. It has not had a problem with at least 300-400 rounds through it.
No doubt! It really is a fantastic pistol.
Can’t wait to buy 😁
Elijah London It’s a great buy! Still one of the best!
I love this gun. Just got it a few days ago.
i just bought one I get to pick it up Monday =) cant waite
Got mine for $250. love it
good review: i had one of the oldest sigmas on the planet, and I bought it used...it worked flawlessly for me, and I carried it a lot for duty...then alas, I got bit by the glock bug...but me being me, what comes around goes around. i can't beat the price on this weapon system!! so, I'm thinking about picking up an sd, before they vanish from commie-fornia...either that or I move from the worlds largest prison camp. again, good video. keep up the good work.
semper fi, carry on!!
Why would you want to be a cop in "Commie-fornia"?
"The other 100,000 Navy SEALson youtube" I loved it. 10/10 lol. Good review btw, thanks for this.
Thanks Jobus! It's my pleasure.
I didn’t care for the rear sights. S W sent me new sights for the mp they fit and they have a set screw to tighten them holding them in place. Good job well done.
bill grant Thank you Bill! I appreciate that!
You hit the nail on the head. This isn't a competition gun or a pocket pistol. Its for self defense so it makes a great car gun or home gun. think mine is a great gun for its price. It's eats everything except Tulammo Brass Maxx. It's my nightstand gun and I have full confidence in it.
Oh yeah, for sure! I mean, this is still a smith and wesson right?
I just purchased one of these from my local gun shop. I haven't shot it yet. The trigger is very stiff and I hope it gets better over time. I plan on using it in my position as church security. I had a little Ruger LCPll .380 for my own personal defense, but needed something larger and more accurate for carrying to church. I've ordered a green laser/flashlight combo to mount under the barrel.
You’re a good man and a proud patriot. Stay safe and live long.
That was it! Apex. Thanks for writing that. Makes the trigger crisper or lighter?
2improper apex trigger and spring kit makes the trigger pull lighter about 5.5 pounds and shortens the trigger travel some you still have a double action pull perfect for self defense and get's rid of the plastic rubbing feeling!i think everything was $70 including shipping!i'm buying the 9mm next and doing the trigger job also!hope this helps anybody!
You know what? I'm thinking about getting the apex trigger for my M&P 9!
I bought a 9mm SD, put over 400 rounds with no problems, my Glock 17 n 19 both had hangups and i paid $200 more for them, that makes my SD more reliable.
ilovetheusa1964 I don't believe it
Sigma and m&p had a baby has the the best of both lines .
Blurp Doodlesnatch Awesome! Thats all good info. for everyone!
Great review. I’ve been considering getting this gun for a while now.
Thank you very much! You won’t be sorry. It’s an inexpensive gun, it’s a simple gun, but it’s a very good one.
Very good video and I agree with you about people complaining about the trigger. They need to "man up". More and more I see people who buy a 22 cal and try to kill Water Buffalo and then spend 45 minutes bitching about the 22 cal pistol! As you point out....this is a solid budget self defense pistol.
i have this gun and i bought it off of a friend that never fired it . for the price he bought it for and the price i got it fo ri was a bit skeptical but as a marine and being very hard on weapons it well exceeded my expectations . the sight picture is a litle wierd on mone but once you get used to it this gun rocks . i have had it for about 4 months now with about 750 rounds through it. awesome gun carry it most places
holy shit man! I literally just bought that Smith & Wesson SD40VE, and i already had a Beretta Nano! i though that was pretty cool!
wheelinstud Great minds!
I also have a nano, they’re kinda rare
I’ve got one and have made a few upgrades and I love it
I know I'm late to the party. Just pick one of these second-hand with about four hundred rounds through it Max, it's in new condition and it already has the Apex Trigger spring kit installed and 2 maga $249.99.
