For any that don't quite grasp what they're doing in this video, here's an explanation: The video is about a modification to the transmission of their AE86. Specifically, what they've done is replaced the fifth (and final) gear of the transmission with a different gear wheel, which makes them faster around the track that they're driving on. The answer as to why it makes the car faster lies in gear ratios: Gear ratios are commonly described by saying that a gear has a ratio of "x":1. What that means is that the drive shaft of the engine has to turn x times for the output shaft of the transmission to turn once. When x is larger than one, the transmission is amplifying torque, but also reducing the turning speed of the drive train, when x is smaller than one, the transmission is reducing torque, but increasing the turning speed. Usually, the first gear of a car will have a high x value, because you need a lot of torque to get a car rolling from a stop, and the fifth and sixth gears will be so-called "overdrive" gears, where x is smaller than one, so that you can reach higher top speeds without increased engine RPM (this is good for fuel economy). The gear ratios of the T50 transmission found in AE86s are as follows: First Gear: 3.587:1 Second Gear: 2.022:1 Third Gear: 1.384:1 Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 Fifth Gear: 0.861:1 As you can see, the fifth gear is an overdrive gear. This is also the gear they've replaced. The replacement (the "3.5th" gear) has a gear ratio that lies somewhere between third (1.384:1) and fourth (1.00:1). They did this because the track they're driving on doesn't have a lot of/any straights, where they would need a high top speed, but is instead very technical and winding, meaning the driver has to do a lot of braking and accelerating. The intermediate 3.5th gear allows them to optimise their mechanical advantage for the track, meaning they go faster. The transmission is described as a "close(d) ratio transmission", due to the gear ratios of all the gears being closer together (relative to the original gearing); this is commonly seen in racing cars. The reason why they chose to replace the fifth gear and not put 3.5th where 4th is and moving 4th to the final gear position is a matter of cost and complexity, as it's easier to swap the final gear in the train with a different one compared to taking the whole assembly apart and machining all the gears to fit together again.
i have a good question now how long would it take to change the gearing in the gearbox can it be done on the fly by taking some tools or will it take a hour or two of work because since im trying to be a decent racer im trying to get any little advantage based off a course i can when doing so
dylan rebuilding a gearbox from scratch is probably a major job, if anything you should look into a already built close ratio trans, or just change the final gear at the very least
From my understanding it's acts as a wedge between the car body and the door. In this way it makes a structural connection between the two and as a result the door ends up helping to restrict some of the movement in the body.
Most of the video is about finding settings to get more grip to the rear. Drifting and optimizing car for lap times are two completely different scenarios
Oh come on with the memberberries.... 7AG was the best way to get reliable power and of course torque which is great for the street. They can always put road tires back on it. For the gearbox, fuel economy will be a bit down, but I think that keeichi is probably rich enough to afford gas. Oh, you probably wont ever need 5th gear on japanese roads too.
Keiichi is quick learner tho, the way he change 3 to 3.5 gear without mistake almost like he have that kind of setup for a year while that is only his first try A true legend
One benefit of this gearbox configuration is you can drive through the first 4 gears like normal and you have the 3.5 to the right when you want to use it on the straights. I wouldn't drive it though - I'd be TERRIFIED of upshifting into 3.5 from 4 (thinking it was 5th) and sending my valves through the top of the bonnet! It's really hard to unlearn muscle memory. It's amazing to see that Tsuchiya didn't hurt the car once with a miss-shift while one the attack.
well the reason for removing 5th was that he wasn't going to need it, instead useing a 3.5 so increase acceleration comming out of corners. and one bonus to this config is that muscle memory from the normal 1 through 4 gears wont be lost and you wouldn't need to learn to rev-match a downshift from 4 to 3.5 and then to 3
I’ve been driving the gunsai touge on assesto corsa and I could see the value of having a 3.5 gear. I’m constantly switching from 3 rd to 4th on the longer straight always.
Nothing new here except for the silly gear pattern. Datsun had the 'Option 1' motorsport gearbox for rallying and racing in the 70s. It was also a 5 speed with a direct 1:1 5th gear. That gearbox placed reverse where 1st is in a regular H pattern and 1st where you normal see 2nd. That way, the next 4 gears that are always in use (2nd - 5th) we all in an easy to remember regular H pattern. 👍
2:07 what a beautiful ratio!! Looks at the RPM drop only 1,000 wow! looks like you won't be low on power when you need it at high speed the ratios get closer meaning you can stay in the Power Band easier
Initial D pisses me off so much. The only reason they are so pricey now is because of clueless takumi wannabes. And people like me, who just want one because it's a superb and fun learning car and because of tsuchiya are fucked
for those who are wondering how fast the times are, 2012 Nissan GT-R(the fastest car on the course until 2018) clocked 25.888 seconds on the same course, it was stated in one of the other videos
the '5th' gear has a higher ratio than 4th but lower than 3rd. so the car has better acceleration in '5th' than in 4th and the top speed is achieved in 4th gear
The fact that he had 0 miss shift on the 1st try is freaking crazy. If it was me, I’d kept changing it normally like it’s still were 5th gear until I got used to the new pattern.
I shift in my car based of feeling (speed, rpm engine sound) more than thinking about it... that being said I would probably blow this transmission up. 🤷🏾♂️
So weird, but it's pretty smooth actually. Consistent in a way it feels when accelerating into an entry but exiting would usually lead to a change from 4-3 or 3-2 instead of 4-3.5 I don't feel like it's useful in a race of any kind but it sure made a bit of a difference actually. I'm probably spewing bullshit but I'm just saying what I feel.
We have been doing this for old volvos in folk raicing for ages. Old trick. Sometimes we replace third gear with 2.5 because you dont really need fourth gear in folk raicing.
