How to play a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) on a Samsung 4K TV via RF

  • Hi, this video shows 2 ways to get a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) working on a Samsung 4K TV via the RF cable but the same process will apply to any RF games console/device like the older Atari 2600.
If you have the option then always go for A/V out rather than RF as the picture is better. On most retro games consoles (inc. Sega Mega Drive) you can get A/V leads (composite, SCART) very cheaply.
Even though the TV is 4K the picture will look worse than if it was on an old CRT television and there will be more display lag so retro gaming on a CRT TV is normally better.
    Many thanks Vince

This looks terrific! I have to admit that I prefer the looks of RF/Coaxial over Composite, which is nearly always smudgy, edge-enhanced and cursed with that "dot crawl" effect. Back in the days of CRT televisions, we were perfectly happy with the RF cable. More importantly, many classic video game consoles and home computers employed a "dithering" effect to blend colors together. When viewed on S-video or anything sharper, that blending effect reveals a mesh pattern of pixels. As always, it's a matter of personal taste. Great video, much thanks for sharing!

RF/ Composite / S-Video & SCART all look bad in my opinion on a HD/ Flat Screen TV, plus you get lag on the timing which is irritating. Now as far as CRT TV composite is my favorite than RF is second. I don't like S-Video or SCART (RGB) because it makes retro games look to pixelated and flickered. Like for example NBA Action 98 looks the best on Saturn via composite on a CRT TV but looks to pixelated and flickered with S-Video and SCART (even with the sharpness all the way down). For example many people think Sega games ported to the PC around 96-98 look better than the Saturn versions but really they are comparing the flickered pixelated S-Video/ SCART image. When using the official Sega Saturn composite cables on a CRT TV. The image is like the image on the PC version (not pixelated and flickered).

I set this up years ago and was luckily able to use the extra channel without moving the the switch from Antenna to RF but after moving the megadrive to another room it wasn't so easy.
After watching this video and 5 minutes messing about with settings on the TV the megadrive is up and running. Yeh I now have to flick the ant/rf switch from when I want to game or tv but at least I can do both again and still keep my tv channels.
Awesome video, thank you and one very happy partner who can now play his games in another room and I can binge watch rubbish on tv at the same time 😅👍

Probably not worse than those overpriced RF->HDMI boxes. Biggest problem is the size, these games were made for 14-21 inch screens on average. Just got a 14 inch Trinitron and it is awesome, but in way the content looks even better on my 1080p CCFL Bravia from 2010. There is lot to argue for a lighter, 1080p TV with swesome even backlight and stellar inputs (3xRGB SCART, composite, VGA, 4x HDMI, RF). Same goes for 2010ish plasma's. They are also much cheaper than CRTS, like 20-40 bucks for a great condition one.

Samsung is weird on this. On my Sony Analogue and Digital are separate, so they don't share the same list. There's a button to switch between them. This two Channel 1 business is a bit messy (obviously one of them is digital 1, and the other is analog 1, even though they're not labelled). But I guess it doesn't really matter now that there's no analog broadcast.

I have a huge hatred for RF just because they fail so often. But good idea anyway especially if your tv like a lot more modern tvs is without AV or Scart then it's the only choice I guess. I personally would rather buy a small form factor crt rather than play it on a 4k via RF it would look pretty ugly and a lot nicer on a small crt.
