  • The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Choir led by Jan Willem de Vriend perform the oratorio ‘Christus’, an unfinished piece by Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn started composing it in 1846, but died in 1847. The now performed music, Op. 97, are fragments from the oratoria that were already written. The orchestra, choir and soloists perform the wonderful music during the AVROTROS Friday Concerto of Friday the 20th of December 2019.
    On the musical programme:
    Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy - Christus, Op.97
    The musicians:
    The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra
    The Netherlands Radio Choir
    Jan Willem de Vriend [conductor]
    Ruby Hughes [soprano]
    Matthew Swensen [tenor]
    Henning von Schulman [bass]
    Henk Neven [bass]
Recording: Friday the 20th of December 2019, live in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

If just Mendelssohn would have lived a couple of years longer and would have been able to complete ’Christus’, the work surely would have been equal to ’St. Paul’ and ’Elijah’ in its length and artistic quality. Now there are only a couple of finished movements so the work remains as a torso; no sketches or partly completed movements have been discovered for the remainder movements and for the third part, ’Resurrection’. This is a superb performance and excellent sound quality, too!

APROXIMADAMENTE 30 MINUTOS DESTA PROMISSORA OBRA FORAM COMPLETADOS POR MENDELSSOHN. IMAGINEM SE ESTE ORATÓRIO FOSSE COMPLETADO. CERTAMENTE SERIA UMA DAS MAIS INSPIRADAS E BEM REALIZADAS PEÇAS SACRAS DO ´SECULO XIX. É UMA LÁSTIMA QUE NÃO TENHA SIDO ACABADO. ALBERTO AGUIAR DA CRUZ.
