  • #POTAshenanigans #hamradio #amateurradio Went on POTA adventure today. I was using the Lab599 Discovery TX500 with the Packtenna EFHW. The Chameleon mast put the antenna up in the air. Nice ranger came by to see what I was up to. At the moment he arrived I was standing in the bed of my truck, climbing up onto my tonneau over to put the mast up. He said, "what we up to today?" I answered I am a ham radio operator, and before I could finish a look of understanding came over his face. I guess K4SWL has been the ambassador for POTA at this park. He then said, "just nothing in the trees, ok". I said, "I brought my own!" He smiled, and drove off.

Thanks! I appreciate your supportive comments. I do believe there are some that will take issue with you calling what I did "cw", but I had fun, lol. That is part of what ham radio is all about. What was predominant throughout the activation, in my opinion, is how the cw hunters stuck with me, slowed down for me, and patiently sent and re-sent their callsigns while waiting for me to get it together. We all start somewhere, and we all have some days better or worse than other days. There's no reason why someone just beginning shouldn't be able to get out there.
Thanks again, and see you down the log. 73 de Bill

Brave to activate in the rain. I'm made of butter and melt easily. Great video.

Thanks for watching, and taking time to stop and join in with a comment. I appreciate it! I went through the Fundamental course at CW Academy which goes from, I think, 6 wpm to 12 wpm; don't quote me on that but I am in the neighborhood. I finished that course. I then have taken the Intermediate course twice, but I never finish. Life keeps getting in the way, and I don't find the time to practice enough. I am not giving up, though! Next time I'll make sure there is enough time set aside. The long and short of it is, the courses at CW Academy are outstanding. I am equally happy about my allegiance to the Long Island CW Club. I don't go there (online) enough either. Both are great places with slightly differently styles of teaching morse code. THX ES CUAGN de K0WHW

Ya, pick up trucks suck today. They used to be made of metal, good for hauling and working. Now they are made of plastic, glitzy with tiny beds and huge plush cabs. If you want a nice care or suv, get one, but please start making metal pick ups with large beds again.
