No build builds are so clever, cost efficient, do-able, versatile and if you don't like it, just take it out. You can turn anything into a camper and then back again.... and you haven't even started to refine it yet. Campers cost a fortune, No builds cost literally nothing, or next to nothing - it's genius.

If not for Bob I would still be stuck in an abusive relationship. He and all of the generous folks sharing their lives and homes showed me what I could accomplish. Thanks, I so love no build builds. It's what I have done in my Airstream and I've been able to move things around as I need them. I'm hoping to move into a container that my friend is going to help me renovate into a home and everything in my Airstream can be used in my container home. My Airstream will become my craft and art room. I started as a nomad, but now live off grid out in the middle of nowhere on my friends property and I love it

I remember when I was researching all this and was so disheartened because all I was seeing at that time in the RTR and Jamie's van builds was super complicated (to me) carpentry, electrical, solar, expensive fridges, etc.. Knowing there was just no way I could ever afford any of that, didn't want to have to learn it myself., and wasn't physically capable of the work itself. That no build build video you did with the cot was the first one I ever saw and was the first time I had any hope that I could ever do this! Now I'm planning a SUV build for myself with just the basics, and everything portable and non permanent. So thankful for all your research and information!

My favorite is the giant recliner, mostly because I need to sleep in a reclined position or I can't sleep. But I weigh too much for most recliners, and even the ones supposedly built for big people that should more than take my weight don't usually have robust enough parts, so even they'll bend.

You can also just put a bungee cord under the bottom of it, front middle, and run it to the top. Some people put a small hole to put the hook in. The bungee cord just goes in a drawer when you're boondocking. That's probably what I'm going to do.

I don't have my camper-van yet, but I HAVE gotten most of the items (cooking/kitchen stuff camping gear) I want to carry in it...it's in 2 plastic storage bins marked "Camping" and it's ready to go in the camper-van when I get it (but, that may be 3 years the earliest). BTW, I don't want to own TWO vehicles, so my camper-van will ALSO be my Daily Driver...for me, that's the only way I can justify it's expense (I'm looking at an "old school design" pop-top type Class B Pleasure-Way "Tofino," even if it's not a "full-service/full-amenities" Class B as we usually know them).

Don't persist in being overwhelmed - wasted energy that doesn't get you anywhere helpful. Bob is really inspiring and you can take his basic ideas and adapt to your needs and your budget.
I f/t "nomadded" with my 12 y/o son and 4 big dogs during my son's middle school years and I went with an old but roadworthy 22ft Class C RV. It cost me $6,500 (although I still overpaid for it) and that worked for us because the structure was already in it but it wasn't easy on the eyes since it was old.
While we were on the road, we met people living in all kinds of setups and it was amazing to see people's adaptations to fit their needs. Once my son is out of high school, I'm taking myself and what dogs are still with me and going back out on the road again. There are pros and cons to the nomad life but by far I found it the most rewarding way to live so far in time on this planet. Good luck!

      Hope everything is ok now?
Yes, that can be scary. On my first go-round with nomadding, I drove a 22 ft Class C RV that cost me $6,500. I learned so many lessons in that vehicle including the difference between a wheel alignment issue that really was a tire abt to blowout. Luckily I was 2 mins away from a Walmart I was on the way to and got it fixed and out of there in an hour or so.
The other big issue was my transmission going out which was giving me clues for months and I didn't know that was the issue. Again, that worked out based on where I was and I was able to replace my RV with another older but better one for $2,500 instead of putting that money into the transmission. Anywho, we live and learn but I will be going on the road again smarter and more experienced this next time around. I will never forget the highs and lows, though, of my first year on the road - they are special memories! 🥰

I like the idea of custom building your home. I wanted to do it but my husband bought this chevy winnebago conversion and the space utilization isn't very efficient. We have a VCR/TV combo hardwired into the floor in the center console, but the TV is tube style and analog so it's not a functional device and we don't have the ability to remove it and swap it out for, say, a refrigerator, which would be really useful. Then there's two bucket seats and the back bench/full bed. He wouldn't dream of allowing anything to be tampered with because this baby is a classic! So everything must stay in its original configuration. Thus, there's virtually no place to store extra water, battery power and if we wanted to sleep in it, we'd have to have a tent off to the side to store our gear while we're using the back because there just isn't space to stretch out and store cargo. Otherwise we'd be constantly searching for the stove, the groceries, the clothes, etc. I could live in this van as a single person, but not very well. I couldn't stealth camp because it's a classic and it stands out. And I couldn't boondock for long because there's no room for a kitchen at all and not much space to pack in water or pack out my waste. He won't allow the installation of solar panels to the roof, so air conditioning is out of the question. So last summer, when we drove cross country, he still required a hotel room because it was 90° outside and he couldn't sleep. So we ride in style, but we do not sleep in it, ha ha!

Bob, thank you for showing the ways and ideas that others used in their own builds to have what you need and be comfortable in it. Whether the no build is for living in, day camping or week/weekend travels it is sure to beat expensive hotels or lodging. It is those personal touches that makes it home. All those ideas in this segment are a winner.

Bought a patio lounge chair at GoodWill and a Slumberjack Cot which I have used in my tent. Lived between the 2000 GMC Yukon and two Coleman 3 person tents for almost 3 full years when I lost everything. Kept working for the entire first 15 months while living in the Cascades outside of SIsters Oregon until left and wandered Oregon, Nevada, California, Arizona, and New Mexico working odd jobs for food and gas. Being 6'6" tall makes sleeping in the Yukon on rare occasions very difficult...Need Full Size van....Absolutely Love Your Vids Bob!!!!!! Pure AWESOMENESS!!!

I love this video: so informative. Each of the vans are designed to each owner’s personality and needs, and all are ingenious. One thought that keeps cropping up though is weight. Although a lot of the equipment is lightweight, nevertheless when all the spare space, cupboards and drawers are full, can all that extra weight actually be a hindrance to driving, not to mention a drain on gas consumption?

    • @cherannretiredgran68
      @cherannretiredgran68 Před 2 lety +1

Research and look up the specs for your vehicle. To find out how much weight of your belongings you want to put in the cargo area, you take the TARE weight from the ATM weight. That will let you know how much you can add to your vehicle.
And it's always good keep in mind to put most of your heavier weight items over your axles. 🤔 Might want to check w someone who has experience in thesematters, before actually putting very much of anything heavy in your vehicle. Now on the bigger vans it may not matter so much as on the smaller ones.

Hi Bob!! While I enjoy all of your videos, I especially love the "best of" series! So, my favorite in this video, since I have a minivan, is the arrangement with the metal bed in the minivan! It allows for tons of storage, under the bed and there is still room for the plastic drawers! Im going outside right now and rearrange stuff in my Minivan to make room for a metal frame!!

10:48 I love that huge chair! It's almost big enough for a football player! I'm surprised the arms are comfy, most chairs I slept/laid in that way, my neck wasn't so happy after! I'd say the chair and I never heard of storage pillows. Def something I can use.
