Hey, there! I stumbled across Simple Ken two months back and I've been binging on them, ever since. They're so comforting to listen to , so thank you! Here's my question #simpleken :
I finished my Undergraduation studies a month back and now I'm looking forward to pursuing my master's, but before getting into a program, I have a couple of months in hand. I've been looking back at my time at college and feeling extremely distressed because I got barely 8 months of offline classes out of a 3 year course. I had to take 2 years of online classes while I was stuck at home everyday because of the pandemic. Now that it's starting to come back to normal, my college is over and I realise I've had not even a bit of a college life. College is the time when there's so much freedom and the ease to be carefree, to make friends, learn stuff, put myself out there and meet people. I have missed out on everything, and I feel like I've lost a really prime time of my life to the pandemic that I'll never get back, and I regret it. When I look back at my days, I associate college with recurrent monotonous days of shifting bw my bed and my PC, and no fun stories or memories to speak of. I can't get over this feeling and it's shit, I don't know how to cope. How would have you, if you were in a pickle such as this?
Thank you so much for reading through!

Hi Kenny! I discovered this long recording of you talking a few months ago and it’s been really interesting to see your outlook and perspective on so many topics 😊.
I am 22 and recently I’ve been pondering about the loneliness that comes along with adulthood. Most people meet their lifelong friends in school or in college but once you start working, everyone gets busy in their own lives and no one has time to catch up as often as one would want to. Adult friendships that you make during work often don’t posses the same depth as friendships that you make while you are at a younger stage in life. Obviously, most times the bonds we make with our school and college friends remain the same even though we don’t talk daily but all of this just makes me feel lonely sometimes. I guess when you enter adulthood you realise that you really are on your own which can be challenging, tough and lonely.
I’d really like to hear your views on this and thanks for all the effort that you put into these videos, it really lifts my mood to know that I am a part of such a nice and sweet community!

Hey Kenny, I had this question regarding the start of REAL high school. My 9th and 10th pretty much went online, and now suddenly in 11th everyone has grown fond of “teen love” people are having crushes, girlfriends, boyfriends and what not. And within this chaos I miss the childish-funny things we all used to laugh at n talk about (like mimicking our teachers lol) I feel left out, partially also because I dont find anyone attractive in my grade and because no one has a crush on me. I wanna cherish this high school experience, but I also wanna get back to playing silly games like Bingo, or gossiping about which Disney International Show is the best. Thank you for posting again!

    Hi Kenny,
    Love this channel!
I have been going through my own self improvement journey for a couple of years now. I think I been depressed for many years and just "sucked it up" and kept going. I'm in my late 20s now and I'm glad I finally see things that are in a sense broken about my life.
One of the big messed up things is my family dynamics. I realised that I am the emotional support person to whom everyone pours their heart out. There have always been tensions in my family between parents and my older brother. During my late teens there was an extended time period involving my brothers love marriage, toxic home environment and feeling completely ignored. I think I just stopped opening up to ppl around then and just supported other members of my family emotionally.
Cut to years later, my parents know nothing about me. And still continue to dump their emotional problems on me. I know I sound like a selfish ass**** for saying this. But I want some good feeling when I talk to my parents. I am currently studying in Europe and the weekly phone call is such a taxing event in my week.
How do I break out of this mould and build a positive healthy relationship with my family which is mutually supportive? I would like to talk to my parents more, but I feel it doesn't give me anything in return. Any advice on things to do or new perspective is useful.
I wonder how many ppl are going through this.

A lot of people especially in India ask if it's okay to date with studies and all of that because I think all of the oldies say "oh you shouldn't date cuz you'll get distracted" but for someone who is stable, why not? Nobody says "oh you can't have friends cuz you need to study". A partner is mostly just that, a special friend. You need people in your life all the time! It is so much more fun and interesting to have someone else along for the ride. We should always welcome and pursue relationships of any kind! :)

Hey Kenny, you really are like this wise chetta who neither sounds judgemental in advice like elders nor dismisses you off with immature, easy to digest solutions (usually due to inexperience and not ill intention) like some friends. Thanks a lot for doing this episode.
My question is, do you believe that childhood emotional trauma makes you mature faster? We see literature and other contents that implicate such a notion a lot. I am a college student and among my friends, I am considered to be the mother of the group. I come across as a matured person to them due to different instances where I avoided conflicts or pointed out red flags in guys or sounded like someone who says sensible things about life. But in my head, I always thought of myself to be a less-serious person. So this whole making me the logical one is really bothering me, partly because I believe it came to me because I had a traumatic childhood (If I actually am mature). How would you resolve the clash within yourself when you are percieved in a way which is almost the opposite of how you want it to be especially when you associate the latter with something you hate about your past?

Hi Rahael, hope you are doing well. Sometimes, people joke, say things and they don't mean it. It is easy to say that you can let go of what your friends are saying but in my opinion that is the solution - to make peace with you being the mother of the group. The kind of traits you have, are actually good for anyone. If you have helped any of your friends with your advice, ideally they should be grateful but to lighten the mood sometimes, they might call you names. Don't take it to heart. You are only helping your friends. We all need friends like you. Lots of love! :)

This is so true! Except in my situation it's not the past it's the present, I cannot change it. my circumstances have made me more mature, Im still in school, but my thoughts and way of looking at things is similar to people who are above 20 years, I can say that this means ive matured?
But I do relate to pointing the red flags, and giving advices to someone who truly needs it, it's like they can't see what's wrong for them, but I can!
I always think that my surroundings have made me this way. I'm sorry you feel that way too.

    Hey Kenny,
i have been the class monitor since grade 3. i am 17 now, preparing for college entrances. During this whole time of being the class representative (around 8 years), i was very strict towards my classmates. almost all the times i was loyal to the teachers and didn't gave any perks to any of my friends. obviously, i started losing friends and at the end ppl only talked to me if the wanted notes etc. i was sometimes bullied and made fun of and my classmates always hated me. eventually i started to block ppl and put in no efforts in friendships cuz they were in vain. i came as a "rude" girl who was infamous for being happy alone. had i not been such obsessed with following principles and values, i would have been happy.
i moved to a new place 2 years back. thanks to my past i literally had no idea how to make friends. my insecurities peaked and confidence reached depths. i naturally gave in to staying alone. now that i have to attend college how can i carry on with this personality? how can i change?
on a second thought, are friendships in college really worth it?
also, thanks for creating such a beautiful platform, keep posting more!

Same thing happened with me.... Trust me make friends in college, they'll become your core pillars.. office friends are fiends....! Start unlearning the false ideas ... It's possible! Because of such bad experiences in childhood, you'll eventually have pretty high standards for someone to be a friend and would terminate once they fail! So be open to accepting people with their flaws but choose the right ones and kick out the toxic ones. But you'll only learn about it over time... Good luck! Be choosy but not rigid

And which learnings from it do you think help with other aspects of life. For me, it's failure despite hard work. You can work on a peace religiously but get it wrong on the day of performance, and that's life. I have always linked that learning to Snape saying "It might've escaped your notice but life isn't fair".

Hey Kenny! I wanted to say that I really really appreciate what you’re doing with Simple Ken, it is not only spreading emotional intelligence into the community, but also touches important topics about friendships, relationships, toxic positivity, etc. It is my comfort show and it serves as a dose of serotonin whenever I am feeling depressed, or just clueless. The question that I wanted to ask you today was that there are some big changes that are taking place in my life, I am moving halfway across the world away from my family, I have NEVER stayed alone away from my parents. And that brings a lot of anxiety about the future, and whether I will be able to cope with the responsibility that comes with it. Even my parents are overwhelmed with emotions and frankly, this new chapter of my life what should I do to cope with such emotions?

Hey Kenny, I'm an Aerospace Engineer in France and recently got married. Love your podcast and other videos. There's so much stuff happening in India at a regular basis. My parents (like many others) are addicted to contents over social media, as a result they are kind of non receptive to any other opinion which doesn't aline with theirs. I think these platforms are just isolating like minded people and amplifying their views exponentially. Every time i try to have these conversations with my parents, the discussion turns into they lashing out and saying "you are already an angreez and don't know the real problems of india, you don't know anything". I feel it's not just me but a lot of other young people are struggling to communicate with the older generation without them lashing out. Have you struggled with anything similar and/or how do you suggest we should approach such volatile crowds (knowing that ignoring is not a solution coz they are close family members or friends of ours)?

And if not, how do you convince your parents you will be fine eventually? How to have a good social circle? How to be the ideal kid parents want me to be?The whole Covid situation has affected me, but how do I assure others that I will do well, despite being silent mostly and that it’s not a bad thing being silent?

What is your process of convincing yourself to do your job and the maintain consistency? I find it really hard to stick to a work routine and miss out on some good opportunities because of it.
I also wanted to know how you deal with stressful situations.
Please read my question and let me know how you deal with facing this. Thanks a lot.

Hey Kenny, Congratulations for the wedding, I am a huge fan, I love all your work and I really relate to you. My friends say I have the same quirky qualities as you. Anyways so now I'm going to start 11th standard and with all the parental pressure and expectations to be perfect and successful I realized that people don't often consider the effects of all this pressure on the mental health of students and even the students themselves
I've seen some of my friends who are not allowed to take any decision for themselves and they think that its okay but it leads to mental health issues.
And i myself got aware of all these issues recently and in India people still consider students and teenagers as just robots who have to do what their parents decide.
What should one do to raise awareness for teenagers' mental health?

coming to my question, i wanted to know your thoughts on horoscopes, especially sun signs & compatibility, and whether it is something that you may have thought about before. i’ve come across a lot of people who have sworn off particular sun sings because through their experiences they were convinced that they could never be compatible together. has this ever happened to you or someone you know? and how accurate do you think this could be?
anyway, hope you & tracy are doing well, lots of love and happiness to you both ❤️

Hi ken sir, This is Jinisa this side :)
I am soo gald you spoke about big goals and their stresses😁. When I was in 8th I decided to do CA and when I started applying I wasn't completely feeling into it, but since I decided and dedicated my junior college subjects to that, I went a ahead a gave the first intial exam. Which is btw supposed to be super easy kind off, but still in the process I lost the purpose of doing it and also I felt real low on confidence during that time...I started studying for those exams from june and in October and November I completely couldn't study, I was super duper down, like there were weeks were daily in the eve I used to cry... that's when I decided that I won't let it take my mental health, its okay . I spoke to my mom( she is a counselor) she also agreed with me, because she saw me at the worst too...
People suggested me to not continue writing CA first exam also, but since I studied for it for 4 months I decided I will write , I will pass and I will not continue and that's what happened, after 2 months gap ,I gave my best at revising things and getting passing marks, everyone were proud and also asked to continue, but since I had already decided that I wouldn't continue for time being, I didn't.
Now I really don't know what am I supposed to do, but I know I will soon find out my piece of cake and do well at that. Exploring my options to find me in them😬😬
Btww I loveee you simple ken episodes, this is the only podcast type thing I listen too...others I don't know I get bored in 1-2 episodes it self...I hope you continue this, even if you are irregular, these surprises are pretty good.

Since this is a space where we all just share stuff, I wanted to put out there something that's been itching at me recently.
So I'm a neet aspirant. Yeah surprise surprise, what teenager isn't these days I know. I was actually surprised when my friend told me she WASNT preparing for neet the other day.
Anyways, the neet deaths have started. Yeah, already. And it's just sad. So mu parents always scold and bad mouth those kids who killed themselves for being cowards and not thinking about their parents, and I just sit there thinking about what they would say if they knew their own daughter has thought about killing herself countless of times over the past two years. And its just exhausting because we don't even know who to blame. The kids? The parents? The government? The educational system for not guiding us through all the different career choices there are? Like I've never heard of one Indian school that has a career guidance counselor. And a good counselor in general either.
This mam came to our school once and said we could talk to her about stuff and she would help us get through it, she had a physc degree or something. My grandfather died that time and I thought I would go talk to her about that to feel lighter but she wasn't there. And even when she came back to school she was always found to be doing some other school related work.
So it's just confusing this whole thing. A never ending cycle of WHO DO I BLAME. Just wanted to say that. I hardly doubt anyone read the whole way through this long ass essay. But we never got to write intellectual and ACTUALLY IMPORTANT essays at school. We actually never got to think at all period. So thanks if you read thru tho.

Hey, neet aspirant here as well and I completely agree w you. I've p much always wanted to be a doctor after getting inspired by someone I know, and didn't really pay much attention to other career choices (took pcb + m in 12th thinking I would have engg as "backup", god was i wrong lmao), but I've seen so many people who have no clue about what career choices exist, everyone is just after the "high paying" jobs.
It's kinda scary to think about the state of the education system as a whole rn, we've pretty much already reached a saturation point in engineering and medical with the sheer amount of students applying for jee/neet. I for one was shocked when I looked at the career choices pdf by cbse a while back, there were so many paths you could choose. No one gives a shit about student mental health here, I wish the condition improves and students get a better way to approach to their future/career like other countries, which involves building up necessary skills throughout your school years, and showcasing them to get admission in universities. Here all skills students develop are just mugging up lol, maybe a single good thing we get out of it is that we're pretty good at dealing with pressure by the time we're done.

    • @tanushrih2178
      @tanushrih2178 Před rokem +2

@@akshay3078 fr adults always say mental health is important nothing matters more but the truth is noone gives two shits as long as they get a face to put on their posters every year. Ranks are all that matter.
And MUGGING don't get me started on that 😭😭
I'm so sick of being told to memorize everything. Yk there's stuff we just HAVE to remember like the periodic table, constants blah blah I get it but the rest is just...... these teachers really just don't know how to teach. Ive had like two good teachers in my entire schooling. The increase in the number of students that depend on CZcams for their studies, including me btw, is alarming and says so much about our system.
And yeah so true the ONLY thing my school taught me is how to deal with pressure and hide my real feelings. And also how to deal with people too cause the students AND the teachers in my school were just 🙄
All the best of you're writing this year dude!

Hi Tanushri! I am so sorry you have to go through this. I am a lot older now, but I still remember that phase of my life (around 10 years ago. Jeez! I'm old) where everyone was preparing for their JEEs or NEETs. Because if you are anything other than a doctor or an engineer, you are a failure to society. It is so heartbreaking to see that even after all these years, that mentality has not changed, and has gotten worse in fact.
I hate to be giving advice like some old know-it-all aunty, but try to see if there are other career options available? I don't know you and your reasons for pursuing medicine, but sit down with yourself for sometime and think of why you want to go down this road? Is this something you truly want? Would you be willing to try other career options? And, if you have the means to, is it possible to pursue your education abroad? There is not that much pressure in the medical and engineering field outside of India, and the education is more holistic, with more focus on practice and knowledge, than competition and grades. For example, here in Sweden, they just have 4 grades - fail, pass, and pass with distinction. I know the education system in India needs a major upgrade, and I really hope and pray that it does change for the better, but it is difficult for us to change that anytime in the foreseeable future.
Anywho, all the best, just swim through this somehow. If you maybe need a stranger to talk to, you can message me.

22:44 we are doomed? I would like to have a genuine conversation here , anyone with points please reply, Heyy , I recently converted from being a pessimist to being an optimist, all thanks to philosophy, but , guys , what made me change was ,to look at the fact that "man we are not the product of the past 200 years , we are the product of the past 4.6 billion years" , this fact made me think about the purpose of life and things like that, and I was introduced to minimalism, I started writing all my thoughts down, everything, and also catagorising them ,it was a faf but then everything started to fall into place , everything had a meaning and a connection to each other thing and the grand thing made sense , hey if think of it this way, unicellular life one day by random chance did what, did the thing called lets collaborate ,so they did and now bamm humans exist, now what, what? Now we live for sometime and we invent farming 10000 years ago , so what ,it goes on and on and bamm classical music revolution in 1700s , art starts blooming (ig u are already guessing what i am trying to say) and then some time goes on and boom world wars , and that led to so much technology and then we have this much today, but if you really ask whats the point , hey you intelligent idiot we as a species solved our singular problem of survival, so now what evolution stops ? No thats where it gets interesting, we will go back to the most efficient ways , thats the way of nature , just like now how a stomach cell of today is not thinking "what will i do for food how will I be protected from outside environment and oh no what about the other bacterias trying to kill me ", no none of that happens, its just content with who it is accepts it and is a part of a larger vision of making the body function, yea it knows it will be dead long before the body dies but it is still contented and does not go into existencial dread , same way one day human beings will understand their purpose and realise that they are part of a much bigger vision than themselves , this has been happening in front of our eyes , so no more existencial dread , and if you ask me if life is meaningful well yes or no depends on whether you follow nature, the unicellular lives who didn't join the part of multicellular life ( yea they are still unicellular) or hell even went extinct, but the ones that made the choice to change in a way nature demanded , well one of its great great greatest grandson is telling you about how meaningful its life was , so yea this is why philosophy is important to give meaning to life and it is also important to do 3 stuff
    1) follow natures changes
    2) be a part of the bigger vision
3)learn already dont reinvent the wheel, what socrates said is what i am saying today but i am too dumb cos i wasted my precious time to find all this while he did the same thing for me to use 2000 years ago.Yea develope knowledge cos curiosity is what makes us human
PS:Oh btw small intro , I am L.Vijayakrishnan , studying in Eee Nit Trichy, hey , kenny, talk about gratitude thats what changed me to an optimist.
Oh yea and please please judge me thank you.

Hey Ken, been watching you from 10th standard. Now I passed out my 12th (computer science). I'm from Kerala. So the thing is, I really wanted to go abroad since a long time. Therefore, I've just completed my ielts coaching and will be writing my exam next month and I'm confident I'll pass out easily. However, I'm really confused about the going abroad now. Still not sure about the course i should take. Also, going abroad costs a lot. And it's my mom's hard-earned money. I'm scared that if I'm not mature enough and I get F-ed up there and cost my whole family a big failure. At the same time I think I can do it.
So basically I'm double-minded on everything. Can't fully commit to anything and is always nervous.
Last day mom asked me what's my final decision about going abroad and i still haven't came to a conclusion.
Maybe your answer will be a breakthrough for me.
    Thank you.

I'm 23, currently in between jobs. I opted for a creative field after school and am still working on my skills. It's been a year since I started working and I still have a long, long way to go. Whereas, my cousins and friends (who chose pretty mainstream fields) have started earning way more than I could ever imagine in my line of work. I love what I do, but this difference always gets to me. Since I have a lot of free time now, I often wonder if I should too switch to something mainstream and keep this creative line-of-work on hold.
