We had a huge DnB scene in New Zealand in the late 90's. These guys would fly down from London to play gigs in Wellington like Studio 9. Saw Grooverider, Bad Company UK, DJ Hype, Bailey and Goldie of course. Regret never being able to see Photek though - Solaris is one of the most amazing albums and still own it on vinyl.
Groove Ryder at the Box 96 in Auckland… DJ Trace at Calibre…. We came alive 🔥🥰I left Christchurch early 96 cos nothing Jungle other than Riddle and Pots was happening and in a matter of months it went hectic 👊
I'm grinning my ass off watching this. The tracks proudly featured in this doc from way back are some of my most favorite now. DnB is timeless. I aspire to make beats of this caliber and beyond. Truly inspiring artists and art!
ApaChe glad you liked it. This was my project. I was a huge D&B fanatic and worked at Manga. Talkin Headz and the Breakdance Championship we’re both mine. I oversaw production.
W R No way! it’s an honour to meet you mate, fantastic work....this documentary is a big inspiration of mine from the music, to the interviews, to the cool graphics. Love late 90s stuff like this. I will have to check out “break dance champion” next!
ApaChe unfortunately the editing on both are still cut a bit too quick for my liking but they are still really watchable. I did most of interviews, a few in my flat. All these years later and I still love my D&B.
@@BeatrixKiddo77 hello mate, I know I am two years late, but I just wanted to say I would love to check out anymore work that you may have. Love the aesthetic of this documentary. It’s an honour to chat to the person behind it
“Distortion doesn’t matter too much in drum and bass. As long as it’s loud and it makes people’s ears bleed” I’ll never forget this, this says so much about the origin of dnb
I was 21 in 1998, I had my own 3 bedroom house in Ashford I wish I had it all back...I remember 90s DNB amazing and I was I to manga as well...ahh I want to it all back is my biggest wish.
Wow I really needed this . I have been going through all this old stuff as of late getting my mind right for what's to come . So many memories. All these guys are absolute legends.
For almost 21 yrs since I've bought this VHS in the U.S., I've looked and hoped that they would release those tracks in the documentary that have MC Justyce on it, they are just perfect, especially his vocals over doc scott - unofficial ghost and even the intro singing 'Talkin HeadZ' if anyone know where I can find those full MC Justyce versions, you are the best.
Yeah but Suck isnt on here, he was 1 of Goldie on Scot's best friends and an amazing Dj, dont worry though cos im his agent now and i will make sure he becomes on top of his game once more, if you see this Goldie contact Keith on Facebook cos we have something big planned brother, NHS for life!! ;)
'Predicts'? Easy to say with retrospect, but I disagree. Anyhow, dubstep ended up evolving more from dark UK garage - from producers like Horsepower / Benny Ill, El-B and Jay Da Flex. The drum and bass influence and crossover came after that.
Was thinking about how I saw clips of this doc during MTV's AMP 20 years ago, and it dawned on me I never watched it. Seems about damn time to change that.
OH my G! i was born grew up in tokyo, manga/anime is my reality and everyday life. I was longing go to the dance floor in LDN at that time which was my dream place. In this video, metal heads depict anime as an exotic objects and the dance floor is the daily life. it is super interesting.
The admiration of Dillinja's and Optical's production abilities is unanimous. Meanwhile, to think that there were already so many other serious producers at work on other labels - M-Beat, DJ Hype, Shy FX, Photek, Steve Gurley (Rogue Unit). And what jokers at play - Gallaghers, go karting, Golden Spasms 44:10...
Blue Note, Hoxton Square Leasure lounge, Holborn P.M Scientists comfy Weds night down Farringdon Rd Fucking great times. hate everything about nostalgia but that freshness needs to live on.
If your saying all the dnb sounds the same now you just aint looking hard enough. loads of dnb about! Glad to see One7four festival last saturday in essex there are so many dnb heads out here we need more events in essex! Dillinja 2-3 and randall 3-4. SAY NO MORE! There will always be respect and admiration for the legends by the real music lovers. Dillinja is literally a Dr in dnb. whens the valve system coming out though? never experienced it but its on the bucket list. A lot of the older lot naturally stopped going raving which is fair enough innit but theres no point moaning about evolution of the music just be greatful for whatever era you were in and it is all accesible at your fingertips for freey understand how many ppl make dnb now. plenty of likeminded people. I always laugh at the older lot who say the "pills aint what like they were in the 90s" Its like na mate you just had your time and now you tend your garden and get your prostate checked (Dont forget book it now its important) Chemical tests on amazon and at festivals now and people dont have to buy pills off strangers at raves now so its good times. Praise jesus! The young ones are the main ones putting money into the scene so thats why it always looks like theres only ever jump up nights going on. BUT most of these artists on this documentary still play every weekend. Scene is so strong. My generation were kids when the internet cameout downloading porn on limewire before we even had pubes and the first young kids to smoke proper skunk. we need stimulation ASAP, I need drugs that work delivered to my doors by a tusted local vendor and tunes that are gonna stimulate me at a rave not just create an atmosphere. At home people will forever be digging in the crates but its just all on the internet now aint it. Having said that I fucking love some of the old stuff its sounds so raw and organic. of course im a little jealous of those who were literally there at the start of it. Hearing a completely new genre in a crowd of people who went out to actually dance and following djs in this whole new world of dub culture are you mad? Meeting people to find out whats coming out rather than just checking soundcloud and juno. So many people now just get on the packet in their local. Sniffing round the same old birds having the same shit conversations. Cant wait for the new Macky G EP on metalheadz watch out for it!

LOL at the piracy ad at the start I remember them on every flippin VHS
the good old days!
Watching a pirated video about piracy lol
😊
I'm grinning my ass off watching this. The tracks proudly featured in this doc from way back are some of my most favorite now. DnB is timeless. I aspire to make beats of this caliber and beyond. Truly inspiring artists and art!
In case anyones wondering, the metal song during the ads before the doco starts is Celtic Frost - The Heart Beneath
"Always be on the lookout. Never be negative to anything that's new. And that's the way you learn." - Grooverider
Quite fitting to the current 4x4 hype debate in DnB
Groove is 100% correct.
What lemon D said about minimalistic tunes is actually what a lot of dnb sounds like today...and he knew back then :o
It's only minimal in some aspects. Rhythm is full on bowl you over maximum
Doc Scott "The Unofficial Ghost" - still gives me goosebumps everytime!
20 years later. :( god help us all
Lol so true. I'm only 18 and 90s dnb shits on a lot of the stuff produced nowadays. Good to see metalheadz still going strong now tho
@@harveycrook5365 fully agree with you mate. 18 myself aswell and 90s early 00s dnb is the shit
Good to see you younger guys digging it, true art and real music are ageless. I'm waiting since the late 90s to hear a true new evolution of music.
Glad you uploaded the entire thing from the start, with previews - just had a mad VHS flash back !
Ikr those Manga ads...
LEVELS EXCEED THE RED!!!
Pure nostalgia man!
This is the best thing I’ve ever watched

I want to all back now..and big shout to Metalheadz label.
Sunday Sessions at Blue Note were highlights of the 90s
I'm lovin' that LED screen.

woah that piracy advert was a blast from the past
Wow I really needed this . I have been going through all this old stuff as of late getting my mind right for what's to come . So many memories. All these guys are absolute legends.
I still got my copy on vhs. Quality documentary
video educated me alot back in the years....big up HEADZ
Such a diverse genre ''long live dnb''
Plenty of 'Amen's' to that.
32:09 how Ed Rush and Optical make some dank music
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?
That was cool watching D knock out some riffs, think bits of that track maybe morphed into "Wild Funk"... big up all Blue Note crew!
Classic!!!
Big up Ray Keith. I see you!!! Big DJ and producer!! I miss Black Market Records in Soho. Used to love record shopping in Soho.

0:04:30 > Skip ads/trailers to beginning of the documentary
Goldie at the end...off his chops HAHA
heavy stuff, pretty thanks for upload! it keeps me banned into nostalgic mood and makes me a bit scary too.
Source Direct look like Rodney and Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses. 6.46
TALKIN' HEADZ!!!!!
what day mean look like!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are Del Boy & Rodney PMSFL!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like how Lemon D predicts Dubstep at 46.00mins
'Predicts'? Easy to say with retrospect, but I disagree. Anyhow, dubstep ended up evolving more from dark UK garage - from producers like Horsepower / Benny Ill, El-B and Jay Da Flex. The drum and bass influence and crossover came after that.
It was still influenced by dnb in the way garage was with jungle
This is sick. Nice one for uploading! Peqce
Here in 2024
Was thinking about how I saw clips of this doc during MTV's AMP 20 years ago, and it dawned on me I never watched it. Seems about damn time to change that.
I'm producing my own Dnb & Jungle, might not be amazing but you can keep it alive learning yourself
Me too just got an Akai S2000 and some other stuff and I am gonna go for it.
ICONS
hahahaha that pirate advert before made me laaaugh!
Oh yeah - mange tak!!!
This video is everything
25:47 these samples ended up on Trinity - Wild Funk - Chronic 13
KickSubs is great 20 years later slowed to around 135...!
That Manga advertisement brings back so many memories.
