  • Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.
    Waste pickers living at the base of one of Delhi's biggest landfills have learned how to grow herbs and vegetables in the small space they call home. The garden project aims to provide nutritious food to people at the margins of society.

    Chintan has been doing such wonderful work over the years that we are lucky to have this team in Delhi.. there is a long way to go in providing dignity to waste pickers and people have to segregate their waste and compost their wet waste ..our waste is our responsibility

    • @tarunce995
      @tarunce995 Před rokem +2

      Absolutely correct. I myself understood this responsibility last year of importance & embracing segregation of waste. Such a shame to me that it took so long 20years for only embracing this habit & what's more of shame is that educated people too not understand this. People are truly responsible. Social is difficult but can be done. The sooner the better

    I wish the Supreme Court would mandate that every city, every town and every village enforce waste segregation ( plastic, glass, paper, metal etc etc...) This would greatly eliminate the need for these poor people to go about walking in this toxic environment to separate out the waste. God bless these people who are so neglected and make our lives livable!!

    Great initiative but the lady said she used soil from landfill, this is not good as heavy metals and plastic are leached into to soil. Maybe teach them about vermicomposting or provide good soil.

    These types of nutritional awareness are needed for all, not only the lower class but middle class too. The high cost of green vegetables impacts all classes consciously/unconsciously and growing them at our own place will reduce the price significantly thus intake would increase. And people will get organic vegetables too.

    Nuytrion is essential for a good health...unfortunately Indians don't always eat very nutritious food. White rice is actually bad for you as it lack vitamins and minerals but those villagers seem to eat the same things the parents ate, and the grandparents ate without questioning where their illnesses or tiredness comes from. A nutritionnist is a good thing and proves it is necessary....

    Start at the grass roots. Every govt. School. Should teach kids how to be hygienic where water is a scarcity in poor living conditions. Bins provided could teach kids how to use bins for _ food waste, plastic, glass, toilet or body fluid ( pads, tissues, vomit bags). This way no human has to do degrading filthy jobs touching body waste. Next step is teaching kids to grow and eat nutritious food from their own vicinity. And that wastage is a no no. Campaign for less manufactured goods being used in school. And above all their health, well being and from protecting themselves from scammers and crooks.

    Start Gorilla Gardening take vacant, land, clean & have an area for a children playground as well. (swing & slide) with no garbage. If owned buy from owner (government assistance) & make a communal area. Grow, perennial food, spice & trees(fruit) to shade their eating area & reduce the strength of the sun by multi level growing (permaculture) in same area. Trees will will help with air purification. Plant a few fruit trees that will give continue good food & shade their homes. Constructing shelves for each area would help increase the growing area by going up. Bamboo get a source (Government) or savaging from dump to have the local men build shelves for this and other needs in small areas yards. Empowering these people could be just enlightening them to how to grow and create a business with local resources since they have not be custom to this idea.
