Peugeot Boxer 2.8 HDI 2002-2005, Gearbox Oil Change | Attempting to Repair Our Grindy 5th Gear

Our Peugeot Boxer has developed a grind as it transitions into 5th gear. This could be a number of things but we think it might be that 5th gear isn't getting enough oil. So we're going to do a gearbox oil change and see if that helps. This will also work for Fiat Ducato and Citroen Relay.

This van was an ex-school bus, with only 80k miles on the clock, 3 new tires, a new exhaust, But most importantly it starts every time and doesn't have a fuel leak. The two big problems with buying an ex-school minibus are, one, it came with 14 seats in the back that we have to remove and try to get rid of. two it has a speed limiter on it. This van is so big we can all sleep in it, allowing us to travel to beautiful places far and wide, like Scotland and Wales, whilst staying in the van. So join us as we convert this ex-school bus into a beautiful family camper, from electrics, plumbing, and gas to building 3 beds, a kitchen, a dinette, and a toilet all into a 6ft by 11ft box.

Good for you guys for changing it. Nobody bothers with gearbox oil. I had the same problem with my windscreen leaking onto my engine. Check your gear linkage cables for play..

Hi Josh. As a Mechanic who did 34 years in the motor trade I can honestly say that I think your 5th gear synchro is at fault. This means a new box or a refurbished, oil won't make any difference mate. Hope you get it sorted. Dave and Rach NB HOLLY X

Thank you 😊 David. That is what dad thought, too. We were hoping to get away luckily, but clearly not. It's good to hear it from a mechanic. It's strange that it's going at 80k miles. Do you know how long it will last and how much worse it will get?

We are having the same problem but worse in our Peugeot boxer, can’t get into 2nd gear and reverse. Did you find a solution?

The problem with it being an ex mini bus you just dont know how many bad drivers have been behind the wheel,it could last for a long time as long as you take your time putting it into 5th,but its one of those how long is a peice of string moments at least you have given it a chance by changing the oil.
