Foam cutting on a home made machine.

For those interested in Foam cutting - very dull for anyone else. Video is sped up 250 to 350% during cuts.
Using DevWing Foam2 with a home made 4 axis hot wire cutter to cut a XPS foam core for an F5J wing.
Showing differences between foam brands cutting the same file. The yellow foam releases internal tensions when cut and distorts which affects the accuracy of the cut. Enough to lift a 1.5kg steel plate. The blue foam is more stable. Both are sold locally as 300kPa density. The yellow is cheaper, but not good for accurate thin airfoils.

What's with the subs booming thru on your audio when the camera moves? Edit that out with an EQ using a high pass filter. Plenty of How Too's on here to do it. You have a very nice machine and setup.

Slow down a bite more the cutting speed will make the ridges flatter and disappear.

Just reduce the speed of the video to 25% and you'll see how slow it actually moves.....

Wire is 27 gauge Rene 41. The rest varies depending on many things! Length of cutting wire, length and diameter of wire connected to the cutting wire. Cutting speed and foam type, expected kerf. For that cut, it was 1.75 Amps and 16V. For XPS foams using that wire I "mostly" set the amps somewhere between 1.5 and 2.2 and volts from 16 to 22. Test cuts determine what Amps and Volts I use before committing to a cut.
