A small airline that had suffered some wear damage let go, instant brake fail.
Operator shaken but not harmed, had his seatbelt on!
He lowered the front blade quickly and that was one of the best things he could have done!

I had a 518 cat like that older model primary brake pod blew then second put blade down dropped grapple didn't work went off 8 to 10 foot high bluff . Stopped my heart when belly pan hit the bluff . Shattered my L2 vertabra ,fractured my L1 when tires hit the creek started my heart . so I got two titanium rods,2straps,8 three inch screws and a bone graft from a dead person. Went back to work 28 days later because I'm a man and my employee bought a skidder tried to take my job. I fired his ass when I found out . Cut 28 to 30 white oak,red oak skidded them a mile and a half to my onsite mill. Bucked and decked them. So my Amish crew could mill them the next day 6 days a week for 18 months ...900 acre job hadn't been cut in over 70 years. Roughest thing I've ever done.

Your heart literally stopped? I run skidder and have never had this happen, but I was driving an old 966 with a bucket going downhill one time when the brakes failed and luckily stopped it with the bucket. Scared the living crap out of me though because I was 6 feet from going over what was pretty much a cliff. ( we have alot of steep terrain where I'm at in Northern California)

I ran a 545C and they do get scary if they get loose. Our cutter leaves some of the bigger stumps taller to try and catch if something goes south. Good look on lowering the blade though

Lol yeah no doubt. I've been logging almost 40 years. I think I had brakes on maybe 2 skidders. They're overrated anyway

No, when it builds momentum like that going downhill it won't stop you if you put it in forward gears. Also there is no park, you put it in neutral and put the blade down and set the air brakes. (that is if they work) He did the best thing by putting his blade down.
@@yearginclarke yeah makes sense . I had this happen on a iced over sloped landing and ended up sliding to the bottom of a hill and missing the bosses brand new truck by like 10ft and instead hit the old loader lol
@@Alpine642 Yeah brake problems can be pretty scary...glad you're alright! I had an unexpected brake failure in an old 518c a couple of years ago. Our main skidder broke down, and while getting the 518 ready the tire was low and some other stuff that took some time, so after that I was in a hurry to get back to logging. Was in 3rd gear going down a narrow truck road with a nearly vertical 300 foot drop below the road, and that's when the brakes suddenly had no response.
In a panic I jumped out and the skidder went over the bank. I was lucky there was no door on the uphill side or otherwise I would be dead. I'm glad I jumped because I feel that if I had tried to drop the blade or downshift the transmission I probably would have wrecked anyway and been killed or hurt. After that incident I try to do as much as I can to be ready to stop myself in case of emergency, and no more hauling ass downhill without a skid slowing me down or something. Hoses breaking or mechanical failure at bad times is something that kinda worries me, as we work on alot of steep ground in my location.
