The America we grew up is disappearing,, Sad
It's gone.
My husband and 1 went on a cross country trip in 1973. We use to stop at those rest stops all the time for a break & eat lunch. We couldn't afford to eat out so we used so many of them. So many had nice shade trees or pavilions to sit under. They were always clean & safe & well used.
They probably a lot still are, but now you can only stay 4 hours if your an RVer, while trucks get the whole nite.
I guess I am one of the few who loves the technology of today's world. The nostalgia of yesterday's world is dear to my heart, but that was yesterday and it has it's place in my rear view mirror.
I would think that technology makes " Nomad Life" alot easier...
Thank you for taking us along! It is sad when we go back to places we use to go and see the changes, sometimes just let go.
We have to look for the good places and believe there are a lot of people who still love the simple life.

As a recently retired truck driver who traveled the country, the reason that states are closing those much needed rest stops is because of lack of funds to keep them operational. 😮😢
I'm 76 so I remember the "good old days", too. Marley is so cute!
The wrong people are advancing us this way on purpose. We need to keep telling people showing them what they’re going to be missing.

Yes, I see this in many states as I migrate N/S each year. Progress sometimes has me grieving for the days that were so uncomplicated. And then remember that this is a primary reason I continue to choose to live nomadic. I create simplicity every day. Like it used to be. Because it still suits me. Because I can!! Some of the best parts of growing up was the traveling we’d do. We didn’t camp because my mom was not about that life, but we did take road trips and vacations & saw some amazing things. I don’t consider myself religious anymore, but one of my favorite memories was sitting with my family watching the sunset over the Grand Canyon & singing “How Great Thou Art.” The life most live today can’t even come close to memories like that.

Yep. It all started with everyday people - getting cell phones. That was the beginning..😢☹️ Before texting was free on your cell plan, people hiding phone calls, not speaking to the whole family - only the dad, usually.. Sad..

It's because we have phones, computers. Etc babysitting our children
And the fact we have so many estranged grandparents
Before interstates. There were little roadside rest areas with picnic tables where you could stop and eat the fried chicken , potato salad mom would make or bologna sandwiches grom picnic baskets. ❤
I hear ya , times are definitely changing ... We are a world filled with smart phones n dumb ppl 😜. Humans are all just so busy with all this new electronic stuff that they have forgotten what life should be about .

I used to love road trips in our family station wagon. I didn't enjoy going past the chicken houses 🐔 houses though. My brother's would start chanting....""I smell holly...i smell holly...i smell holly"" 😂 You'd see these beautiful Arkansas trees and countryside....beautiful old barns and wildflowers in the fields....then...the dreaded chicken 🐔 houses. I'm laughing thinking about those road trips.
One thing about road trips I loved the free beaches . I loved the bologna and cheese from the mom and pop stores wrapped in that paper they used to wrap it in. I loved seeing dad at the campsites trying to climb trees. I guess he finally felt relaxed after carpenter work.I loved it when grandpa brought the Rv because we went to campsites.
So sad to see the rest stops are closing down. Have an especially vivid memory of a rest stop in Michigan where my late husband saw his first fireflies ever. He grew up on the west coast where humidity is uncommon. Fireflies were thick at that rest stop on a very humid summer's evening. Glad I grew up in a time when rest stops were lovely family picnic spots!
I remember going on trips with my parents and stopping at rest stops to have a picnic lunch. Mom always packed a tablecloth to cover any bird droppings that wouldn't wipe off. Had the old Coleman cooler and water jug with ice. Good memories! What's sad is, these places could provide jobs for people. Mowing, trimming, planting, restroom cleaning, etc... Besides paying jobs they could allow low risk prisoners a chance to get out and do some community service. Too bad when things are left to deteriorate. Enjoy your trip! Hugs for Marley!😁✌🤟

We would go. Usually my mom and me and a friend of our families he would drive us to Florida and we'd stop at a grocery store sometimes buy food. Make our own sandwiches.. I used to love the rest stops stop and have a picnic. Sometimes we would stop at a stuckey's. Those were the good old days. I miss them too

We always packed our meals and stopped at rest areas for lunch and dinner. We didn't have much money and they were mostly clean, well maintained and welcoming. So sad to see them wasting away.
I noticed the change in the southern and northern parts of AZ 5+ years ago , As many relocated from my homestate Ca to AZ .... Anywho have you ever said , after all these years, where the heck am I😂 Dead Lord ! Glad you and Marley are safe and going with the roll❤ thank God we still have our past memories of the good times, I'm American however my family's German and they do live in Germany and they do come to visit however they go back home😂

Sadly, the closures have largely been due to vandalism. The upkeep and repair of the buildings' interiors from people destroying stalls, sinks, and toilets is immensely expensive. It's cheaper to put in porta toilets.
Back in Caribou they closed their rest stop because it became what you called a "pickle park" and they feared it would influence the young. That stop was fairly new but they closed it anyway
I am so glad you and Marley have each other. I don't know what the cost to maintain porta potties is but I am sure Maintenance workers could not be all that much more. Thank you for the video.
You are right. We've lost something with the advent of cyberspace. Things can be called progress, but some of these things aren't improvements.
If you have time come up to Willard springs exit on 17 just 10 min south of Flagstaff. It's nice here. Right up the road from munds park.
So much has gone away even in my short lifetime... plowed or paved over by "progress."

At least you were able to access the rest stops. It drove me crazy when California had all their rest areas closed for repair all at once!
Funny, I enjoy checking out restaurants stops. Many of them are very well maintained and many echo the culture of the area. I seem to take lots of pictures there.
...wow, l remember when there were people serving coffee...sad...maybe, the younger generation no longer needs to stop for a bathroom and walk break...the way of the new worId...thank you for sharing :)

You are 100% right Lindy. We have lost so much of life. Now our daily news is about murder and homelessness. Why has it become so hard to handle. Thanks and be safe. Any of us around your age knows exactly what you meant about the food and the nostalgia.
I hope the elevation isn't causing too many breathing problems, it can take some time before your body gets use to the lower level of oxygen. I looked at the oxygen canisters and read that they only deliver about 50 breaths per can, which is only about 2.5 minutes of continued use. Concentrators are medical devices but they require a prescription and can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. I will keep searching to see what else could possibly be useful. Enjoy the sights and the people, be careful and stay safe and cool!

Wise words. I was brought up by a single mom, in poverty. We did not have the luxury of a car, so sadly, I don't have the road trip memories that. You have. Those buildings sure look like they were so good back in the day.

That’s ridiculous. They collect plenty of taxes. Mismanagement and probably corruption. No excuse for not maintaining rest areas.
They are building new ones down the road. But these have meaning.

I've driven from Alabama to California, from California to Connecticut and back to California, then California to Texas and back over the last ten year's and rest stops are few and far many are closed its sad people just have ruined them and who wants to use those portable toilets their disgusting stay safe out there drink plenty of water altitude sickness is serious 😊

Hi Lindy. I left a nice, long comment the other day and it disappeared. Did you avoid Sedona? Much of that area is touristy, especially on the weekends, because the people in Phoenix go up there where it is cooler 😂. Hope you are enjoying Flagstaff area. I like that area, at least it was nice 25 years ago.

Happens all over the world, so sad. Remember my mom packing the sandwiches and build eggs. The world was also a lot more safe back then. The world is an crazy place today. Too many people and race for profits, the human race forgot how to live. 😞

What is real sad is they have taken away what travelers need the most, a place to pee and a place to sleep for a couple of hours so they can move on. If they don't want you to rest at Walmart or other business's parking lots or in some residential areas then why close rest stops. Many gas stations say there is no overnight parking now. People travel for many reasons. What would I have done when I was traveling from Kansas to Maine to make my mom's funeral if I had to get off the highway and search down a bathroom every time I had to go? It would have added hours onto my trip and I would have missed it. In Massachusetts n Connecticut the road signs don't tell you what amenities are at the exit. In other states you can get off to go to a restaurant or gas station but you find they are 3 miles down the road. Rest stops are needed
You will do well in flagstaff locate the Walmart pick up your supplies then head up to forest road 222 make a left it will be nice and cool there

Probably too hot for rest stop to be maintained. You might be in high altitude around flagstaff makes it hard to breath
I haven't been traveling recently and not out west. But there are still rest stops open in Georgia and Alabama. It must be certain states that may have these closed.

Trump is America's only hope for infrastructure. I drive a road about 30 minutes to the store. I have the potholes memorized, but always miss some. Worst road I ever saw. Trump started getting roads repaired. Make America great again!
Large truck stops encourage states to close rest stops.
What the heck is up with all those run down rest stops. They are vital for drivers to travel safely on rhe roads. It's forcing people to drive when they're too tired to drive safely.

Lindy may i ask a personal question. Dont have to say or comment. Notice how short if breathe you are. I was same way. Did a $49 heart, lung scan after my doctors could not find a reason. No doctor order needed. I had 99 % heart blockage and had emergency open heart surgery the next day. Please consider a scan ..

This is not ok. This is not normal for single women of your age to be out there alone doing all this yourself. I think you are doing an amazing job with what you are working with. There absolutely need to be more support for those that are retired. My grandmother lived off retirement money. Apartments were cheap and she lived well. This economy is awful. Please tell us how we can help. What is the end goal here?
