The T-1000 in the molten metal didn't turn into the woman in the 1st movie, it was John's foster mother.
In the directors cut, there is a crucial scene that was removed. John and Sarah operated on the T-101:s ”brain” and removed the learning inhibitor. He truly learned thereafter. Hence the line “Learning yet?”
The edit was criminal.
So was waiting till the "Extended Director's Cut" to restore all the footage present at the OPENING NIGHT PREMIERE.
(Yes, they showed the full film, then cut it for general release)

If you robbed a store at gunpoint, for example, it was impossible for them to prove your gun was real unless you used it, even if they had you on tape. They would still have you for the robbery (and everything else, most likely), but depending on your record, intent to do bodily harm could be very difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. A good time for good lawyers.
When the T 1000 reassembled from the liquid nitrogen, in the directors cut he developed a couple of glitches due to damage sustained. He grabs a black and yellow striped hand rail and his hand sticks to it. His hand and partial arm assimilate to the rail gaining black and yellow stripes. Then as he walks on the metallic floor his boots turn metallic as he walks. Really cool. Idk why it got cut from the standard edition.
From what I recall of an interview, everything that was cut was for time. Nowadays we are used to having blockbusters that are 3+ hours long, but I guess back then they were a lot more strict about keeping theatrical releases to a more limited time slot, and I don't think Cameron was big enough back then to try and force the theatres to play by his rules.
It was left out because it was bad and made the viewer think it was damageable. Also it took from the scene where John looked at the feet to know it wasn't his mom. He didn't need that evidence to know. Every single scene of extra footage was correctly omitted as it took from the story
I always thought that it was from overheating because of the foundry.... not because of the freezing.
I remember seeing this in the theater and thinking that there would never be a better action movie. This movie was huge when it released

It's so funny watching younger people try and process movies like this with little to no frame of reference for the sensibilities of the time period. It must be so confusing because visually, 1991 looked very similar to today but it was a completely different time in terms of values. Even here in Australia, there was a much more relaxed attitude toward guns back then.
You have to remember with almost all of James Cameron movies he had to wait for technology to advance enough to make what he needed creatively

The best sequel to T2 is The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It ran for 2 seasons on Fox. In my opinion it is much better than any of the movies that followed.

As far as the ending is concerned, with the T 1000 essentially torturing Sarah, In the extended version of the movie, it shows the T 1000 copy ability was damaged by the freezing process. They cut that out of the theatrical release for some reason.
That is interesting to learn. I always assumed the T-1000 knew Sarah’s appearance and voice wouldn’t be enough to fool John after it failed to convincingly imitate his foster mom. By torturing Sarah, it was learning her behavior and speech patterns as a throwback to John teaching T-800 more natural speech.
I was 9 when I first saw this action masterpiece in the theater. OMG, it changed my life forever. T2 was my Empire Strikes Back.

the late 80s and early 90s had some of the most realistic toy guns since the 60s. I had the most accurate 92fs, 1911s, ppqs, and 226s, with complete working actions and detachable magazine i'd ever seen as a kid and carried them everywhere. before the 2000s was a wild fun time to be a kid : D
THE T-1000 AT THE END WAS DAMAGED once he got shattered which could explain his actions. arnalds terminator had his chip reset and inturn was able to learn without restrictions. both scenes were cut from this version.

In the Director's Cut the T-1000 showed having problems after he was frozen, like his hand sticking to a handrail and taking on the handrail's colors and he had to focus for a moment to correct the bug. I'm assuming he didn't copy Sarah at first because of the trouble. In the scene where he did copy Sarah, John could tell them apart because the T-1000 took on properties of the floor as well.
My take was that it depleted his power supply especially while being frozen, but there could have been other reasons. The point is he got slower and sloppier over time. On top of that, if the T-1000 was a learning machine he could have developed emotions over time, including frustration of the T-800 always being in his way, which could be the reason he wasn't as effective as he could have been. He wanted to make the T-800 suffer or work of some of his frustrations.
The Director's Cut also had a more definitive ending of the series compared to the theatrical release.

Terminator 2 makes it VERY clear that Sarah has PTSD. Her discussion about sunscreen does seem to have some manic elements.
They really did that to a LA bridge with a semi truck. Smashed right through it. During the riverbed chase just afterwards, one bridge was too low so they cut the top of the cab off and used it to their advantage as a scene.
There is a theory behind why the T-1000 didnt just kill her and copy her at the end. The same way the Terminator was learning new things from John and developing its own kinda of personality. The theory is that the T-1000 was begining to like tormenting its victims. Probably to better learn how humans react during that situation so it could recreate those instances itself with greater realism.

This was definitely a different time. I was in my senior year of highschool. Admittedly in rural NY instead of California, but there were plenty of pickups in the school parking lot with shotguns mounted in the cab's rear window.
Obviously I don't promote that we simply return to the policies and practices of the past, but the amount of social change we've seen in the past 30 years is astounding.
The T-1000 was fooled by the T-800 into believing that John didn't fall for him impersonating his foster mother. Therefore, he needs an authentic Sarah to call to John. When he imitates her later it's due to running out of options.
he most certainly learned to value life because there’s multiple moments where he expresses human emotion.. the end being the most notable.. “i know now why you cry, but its something i can never do” is a full example that he understood emotion and why we have it.. remember when he was working on the car he asked John “why do you cry?”..
This was not only a jump in technology but also in budget. The first was a low/medium budget action flick and this was the most expensive blockbuster ever made at that time with ground-breaking CGI.
When we were kids we all had totally realistic looking toy guns. And we frequently played "War". Ran around shooting each other imaginarily. One of those things that was just sick that we didn't question. I believe a federal law change prohibiting those toys in the 90's.
Keep in mind, for 1991 this wasn't a "color graded" movie, this was film. Any tints that we get from lights were all on-set decisions like geled lights and whatnot. (okay yes, I know they CAN color grade film in the development process, but its nowhere near what they can do today with digital cinema cameras)
Great reaction, Mr. Boyd! Aside from being a great movie, it also solves the paradox that we aren't living in the world of the first movie. Taken together with the first movie, it makes our "future" possible.
While you criticize the nuclear blast scene for the use of minutures, the Federal Nuclear Testing Labs have called that scene “One of the most accurate depictions of a nuclear blast ever created for the screen.” Stan Winston Studio produced the scene, a Hollywood legend in effects.
The reason he was slow walking at the end (and possibly why he didnt want to try mimicking Sarah) is because the liquid nitrogen did have a damaging affect on him. The extended version showcases that.

I was born in '91, I miss these days. This is the best Terminator movie to date. Cop dude is actually a track runner, fast as hell, but running without showing breathing was the hardest thing for him. I remember playing the video game and the semi chase was my favorite part. My dad's old drummer actually left the band to do the special effects for this movie.
James Cameron often or always has blue lighting, in Alien 2, in The Abyss, in Titanic, etc. He'll always find an excuse to use it at least once.
I'm not completely sure, but I think that this might have been the film that started the trend, for blue-orange color palette being the standard for these blockbuster-type action movies. It had the highest box office return of 1991, and at the time it came out it was the 3rd highest box office of all time behind The Empire Strikes Back, and E.T.
The t1000 quickly learned human traits by assuming shapes, murderous frustration, was the first human emotion it shows the first person terminated by it for no reason vital to the mission was the trucker that asked if he was ok, the mission did not depend on him being terminated he had not been assimilated and the t1000 had failed epicly multiple times he was frustrated

Yes, there were deleted scenes that showed he was a little messed up after the liquid nitrogen. Nothing major, but he was definitely not at 100%. Damn shame they cut those parts, it would be kind of nice to give SOME indication the thing isn't 100% invincible.

the doctor is right in the beginning. he doesnt know shes telling the truth. by all standards she is behaving and showing psychotic symptoms and is a danger to herself and others. by all clinical means hes right.
In 1992 I was 14 years old and spent many quarters at the arcade! I saw this movie in the theater.

T1 was shot "run&gun", creditcard budget, with/out permits. Fueled by Cameron's drive and passion for the project.
T2 shat ALL the money Cameron had into it and the results are obvious.
T1000 learned from the experience with the foster parents, his voice mimicking did not work there so that's why he wanted Sarah to call to John. The female he regressed to is the foster mother.

I saw this (late) at a tiny theatre in a small town, that had an 80 year old man playing an organ before the show…making the experience even more wild. Indeed the special effects in this movie were like nothing ever seen at the time, which is why I consider it one of the best of all time.
You wouldn’t be missing much if you skip the other sequels. Although part 3 notably had the most expensive chase scene at the time, which Arnold funded himself (or helped fund)
Okay… part 3 might be worth it for that…and the she-terminator.

I watched this with my dad and sister when I was young. During the scene where the nuke went off and Sarah was holding onto the fence at the park, my sister told me that could happen to us at any time. I was horrified and traumatized and started crying. I have not and never will forgive her.
She wasn't wrong though lmao. It's literally the whole reason the world was afraid of the Cold War and sent spies into each other's countries to get intel on a possible attack.

I had access to an actual revolver as an 8 yo kid. Would never have dreamt of playing with it outside. However I completely dismantled it because i wanted to understand the mechanics. Never could reassemble it.

Actually if you think about it the Timelines make sense. the fact the first Terminator T100 was sent back created John Conner who beats them in the future.
But it failed and was defeated leaving residue ‘the arm and chip’ changing the future. In the new future timeline the machines don’t build the Time Machine until the are at T1000 level. The humans actually capture and reprogram the T100.
I believe judgement day will always happen but it will also be always delayed because every time a terminator is sent back it gives the humans +1 to fighting terminators
I was in 5th grade living in CA when this came out and I had just moved to a different school and I looked just like John Conner and some kids started a rumor I was secretly him even though I insisted I wasn’t.

In answer to why the T-1000 didn't kill Sarah Conner I think it is because he learned that mimicking the voice is not always enough. As for him acting stupider, I would hand wave it away by his freezing and thawing fucking with his programming a bit.
This was ground breaking with effects at the time and held up many years. Even still now in universal studios is the 3d thing made back then, its very good.

Liquid nitrogen is really cold, for sure. But it's not as crazy as most movies show. I'm not old enough to have played with mercury in science class, but we did play with liquid nitrogen. I've have my hand and forearm submerged in the stuff, it boils off fast, and just feels like a cold breeze going up your arm. Obviously you don't keep body parts in there for long, but movies get it wrong.
Fun side note, if you have a drop of frozen water from liquid nitrogen on the table, don't touch it. It'll stick to you, and it hurts. Yay for 1990s highschool physics class 😂

This is one of those rare sequels - like 'Godfather 2' that lives up to - or exceeds - the original movie. Personally, I lover this film and barely have any interest in the first one.
I'm kind of wondering if there was a disconnect - or a minor continuity error, though: John has to order the T800 not to kill people, but Arnie spared the guys in the biker bar when he first showed up; The T800 from 'Terminator' most likely would have killed everybody in the place, so it looks like this T800 was given a no-kill order when the Resistance re-programmed it, well before John encountered it.
There are some deleted scenes that show how the T1000 is taking damage; the only part that remained in the theatrical cut was the little scene at the foundry, when the T1000 goes to walk through a railing and temporarily gets stuck.
And you're right about the big tow truck jumping off the bridge: if you look closely, one front wheel is out of control, presumably due to a tie rod breaking, which would have made it impossible to steer.
I was 10 when I saw this in theater. It was beyond impressive at that time, and still holds up. More practical effects, less CGI please.

The theory behind T-1000’s slow walking at the end is that the machine itself somehow developed a genuine hatred towards humans and a taste for torturing them like Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers.
Another theory behind why we never see anymore T-1000’s in the future is that Skynet itself feared the T-1000 because it couldn’t actually be controlled. It had the ability to willingly overwrite its own programming in spite of skynet’s main goals.
In a situation such as a psych hospital, where people are treating you badly, and your entire life is bleak, it becomes nearly impossible to say the right thing all the time. Most people aren't strong enough to pull that off
Dude, I WAS in the theater when this was released, and the fx were uncontestedly bleeding edge. I do agree that there were maybe two or three “over-acted” moments, but James Cameron isn’t Steven Spielberg - getting outstanding performances from child actors is a very rare talent in a director - so Furlong’s performance is really a testament to his own talent, and the help he reportedly had from the rest of the cast. In all events, this is easily among the very best action movies ever made, and by any standard, an excellent film regardless of genre or era.
Mr. Lloyd knows all. Just ask him.

Personally, my vote as to why T-1000 decided to toy with Sarah versus just killing her is that he started to develop sadistic tendencies. T-100 is programmed to be more human, so why wouldn't the 1000?
Also, as the T-1000 fell into the molten steel, it was transforming into everyone it copied. It wasn't meant to be Ginger from T1. It was John's stepmom. That they both had poofy perms was just a sign of the decades. Lol.

I can defintely understand you not wanting your kids to have toy guns. More so because you have real guns in your home. So many accident I've seen happen because the kids grabs a real gun, thinking its also a toy.
Among the many reasons to see the extended directors, cut is the fact that it was the actual premiere night release cut..... The standard edition was the general release cut of the film, 30 min shorter.
The orange tip on toy guns wasn't until late 90s after several accidents where people shot thinking they were real
I'm late to this video but I was 9 and my drunk uncle took me. It was a late show and my first R rated. It was a friggin amazing experience.
I think the 3rd one is good and gives nice closure to the series, really explaining why it all happened. / still happened.

The ones after that Genesys and Dark Fate, I say skip. They're basically a reboot.
So I think you need to see the extended version. There were scenes in it that helps explain certain situations. Like the reason the T1000 was keeping her alive was because he was malfunctioning because of the heat. Also there is a scene that helps you understand sarah at the end and why she says he learns the value of human life. great reaction though.
Fun fact back in the 90's and earlier, cap guns and toy guns in general actually didn't have orange tips. This proved a very bad idea.

I was eight when this came, so I don't remember if I saw this in a theater, or not. But, at the very least, I did see it at home, on VHS, the following Summer.
