We are home! Now what? | Arriving in the Dark During an Alaska Blizzard

  • We made it home! Now what?
    We arrived in the dark to a snowstorm! 40mph wind gusts, over three feet of snow and a windchill of -16F. There was too much snow for the plow to clear the driveway, the house keys are missing and I have no boots!
    Not the welcome home we’d hoped for but we made it and even with all the hurdles IT’S GREAT TO BE HOME!!!!

    I gotta say.. I would not have dared come home until June! You guys have guts.
    Just a suggestion .. always leave your wood stove primed and ready to light.. with a decent supply of wood. You never know what kind of emergency Alaska is going to throw at you. That kind of cold 🥶 is life threatening. No joke.

I cannot believe you stood in such cold to get those shots for the subscribers. Glad you cut it short to figure out a plan to get back to cabin. It looked very rough. Welcome home though that was a long journey.

    Cold weather makes everything much harder & takes longer to do! I was feeling yalls pain for sure! I trained in the mountains of Bridgeport, California back in 02 or 03 at a Mountain Warfare Training Center that the Corps has. Lower base camp was above 6 or 8k ft and then we went up in elevation to do our training. Minimum of 12-15ft of snow everywhere, made snow caves/ shelters to live out of, small 3z4 man tents and heavy duty 10-12 man tents that we had a small wood stove that we could use in those. It sucked and made all of us hate the cold weather after that. Exposed skin was constantly chafed. We have no clue of the actual temperature with the wind chill but without the wind chill, it stayed around -30° so I'd say it was around -50 at least with the 20+mph wind that was constant there. It was miserable but it would be different doing what yall are doing. At least when you get cold you could take a break and go inside but I do feel for yall in certain situations like yall returning home and having to trek through that snow pulling a sled. We had to pull sleds with our tents and stove on them up and over mountain tops. Being able to achieve those things felt great but since then, we all refuse to be uncomfortable & suffer in cold weather unless we absolutely have to cuz uncle sam ain't making us do anything anymore lol. Keep making videos yall! I'm happy to see yalls following is growing & I'm proud of yall for doing your own thing & sticking it out up there creating a good life for yourselves! I think everyone should have to experience that way of life for a few months just so they stop taking everyday things for granted! I can't wait to see what spring brings us, I'm sure yall got lots of plans once the house is completely finished. Hopefully that spring stays running all year long with plenty of water. I how the go pro works out for yall as well, I bought a new one and one of my brothers did also so we could record our 20yr reunion, they kept going dead super fast or overheating. I'm sure yall won't have the overheating problem due to the temps there but keep me posted on how it works out cuz mine is useless here unless I turn quality way down so I can actually get more than 10 mins of recording out of each battery

      @ouralaskahomestead yvw cuz! It was indeed, some guys got frost bite and a few got gang green from improper hygiene and didn't let our Corpsman know when it happened so it got worse and one guy lost a few fingers and another a few toes from severe frost bite. It was miserable indeed but it proved to us that we could survive in those conditions with the right skill set that we learned from being there. We all embraced the suck together for sure lol

      It’s hard to find a room with four dogs and the thought of another eight hours in the truck after having spent nearly six days straight in it wasn’t appealing. Especially knowing our comfy bed was soooo close. I’m sure a bit of paranoia played into it as well, not knowing the condition of the house. Did someone break in, did the roof collapse, wind damage? There were multiple earthquakes while we were gone. The hike back to the house warmed us up a bit and once the kerosene heater got going it warmed up the house within a couple hours.

      Not so much poor planning as unfortunate circumstances. We thought the driveway was going to be clear. We hired a guy to come plow, unfortunately the unexpected storm blew in before he could get to it. He was supposed to come back and finish the next day but wasn’t able to. We were thankful he at least got a parking area cleared. Things happen, you have to be flexible and make the best you can out of a bad situation.

    You don’t have a shovel? We lived in Ak for 6 years and would never go in the winter without a shovel!

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, we have a shovel. It was at the house. Unfortunately there’s three feet of snow. Not just fluffy soft snow. There are layers of ice and hard packed snow mixed in. A shovel isn’t much good for that. Even the plow trucks couldn’t move it. We had a snow blower and two plow trucks and they all got stuck and gave up.

      Nope. We left in a rush and didn’t think to leave shovels and boots out. I forgot we left the house key with our son in case of an emergency. The snowstorm wasn’t forecasted until two days later. We did think ahead and scheduled the driveway be plowed before we got there. Unfortunately that didn’t work out. Life 🤷‍♀️

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  Před 6 měsíci +1

      The key was with our son in case of an emergency, we hadn’t met up with him yet, I thought I’d hidden a spare but apparently not. The -25 to -40 through the Yukon the previous three days zapped the battery dead. You are right though, it was inconsequential that the SxS wouldn’t start since it wouldn’t have made it anyway considering two professional plow trucks couldn’t get through either. Not sure how a missing key and dead battery constitutes the bozo remark but if it makes you feel better about yourself buddy, you go right ahead 🤡
