You could easily spend hours and hours delving in to this rabbit hole, and I still want my videos to be watchable and digestible by people who are not specifically interested in the subject matter. Worth noting too, that for DST the best designed of the characters have quirks that either do a unique niche thing other characters can't or struggles to do AND have unique perks that can be used on or with other characters. Many modders forget to (or ignore) giving their character perks and quirks that work in a team setting. The reason characters like Wolfgang, WX, and Wes are typically criticized is that in a team-based game, the character themselves are, or were, designed "selfishly." They're all take, no give. Yes, WX has a synergy with Wick, but that's it. Wickerbottem herself gets nothing from their relationship. But WX will take her time and gears. Yes, a good Wolf, WX, or even Wes can do amazing things like rush ruins with a toothpick, or beat every raid boss solo no cheese. But you can do that with literally any character if you really wanted, or several since this is a team game, after all. You can do those funny things AND play a character who offers to synergize more directly with others, or do stuff other characters can't do at all (to call out Wes mains in particular, it's cool you can beat the hardest part of the game with the hardest character. But your character literally consumes more of everything while doing nothing unique or of worth to the team that another character can't do with less effort and resources.)
One workshop character that went under the radar that felt balanced and unique (and has quirks) was the cirno mod. (Note there may be 3 or more at this point, an OP one, a obscure one, and the one I'm gonna talk about an actual unique character) Cirno is an ice fairy from another more fantastical land full of powerful characters and yokai and has a tendency of proclaiming she is "the strongest" dispite being a fairy (one of the weakest yokai species) she's not to be underestimated. Cirno has 50 hp, 150 hunger, 150 sanity. Perks Is a fairy: due to being a fairy cirno is both frail and immortal at the same time. On death sacrifice 50 sanity to get back up! If sanity is below 50 she becomes a spooky ghost. Can manipulate ice: cirno can make ice at the cost of health and even use ice as a weapon! Likes winter: cirno gains sanity during winter and has some resistance to the cold (she's not immune tho) Quirks Very low health: fairys are not known for their sturdyness in fact quite the opposite when your usually a basic enemy in your world. if your farming nightmares remember you got no extra lives and terror beaks can one shot you (actually many things can without armor). I haven't played as her in a while so there might be changes there may not see for yourself I guess.
This is actually why I like an Isabell mod that I tend to always have active, Isabell (though sadly not fully functional due to being old) is a very weak character when it comes to combat, she takes more damage and deals less damage, but she is fast, cant craft things at half price, and has a guaranteed chance to get free food from trees (fruits). She is good for someone who wants to play a support role, especially since she has her own sanity aura and can restore sanity quickly by emoting (though this drains her hunger), and it has helped my friend learn the ropes of don't starve along with kiting. I wish more mods for DST remembered that The T means TOGETHER, meaning there needs to be an element of team play for the character to work fully. otherwise we get characters like jellete, who are interesting concepts mechanically but are boring and braindead to play with.

This is really nice, I've always wanted to make my own DST mods, after I'm done with animation college I was planning on getting into programming and wanted to make a character or mod for the game to try applying those skills

About the whole W thing, the character I want to mod in is called Ebonly Curseflame, but the thing is they come from the world of Terraria AND in her description I want it to say “The one without W, Corruption or Shadow! Who knows maybe she will see her face again”
the half of the mod characters in the workshop have the same perk night vision negating the darkness. every time i think on adding a moded character i regret because they are overpowered or his mechanics make the game too easy and that's boring
Yeah, thinking of something unique and finding that balance between difficulty and fun is pretty challenging. I wouldn't compare my own mod to other ones on the workshop because of how many there are - just focus on making a unique character when compared to the basegame+dlc.
As someone who just thought of an admittedly very cool (and very necessary) character Idea for Don't Starve (together) this video is interesting when it comes to comparing the design process you took and I took.
This doesn't really have much to do with modding, as it doesn't teach anything Code Or art related outside of designing an outline for a character. This video is more like "A guide on how to conceptualize a character."

This video was very interesting so I followed the steps and thought of a character that has different upside and downsides depending on the season along with a changing personality in autumn they are a blank faced monotone normal dude who dosent have much to say other than the un intentional joke in winter a fragile anxious mess who looks at everything with a heavy heart and has the feeling of death hover over them at every bleeding moment in spring they turn into a happy go lucky naive Moron that looks at the world as a play place and not a hellscape in summer they become a power hungry know it all that acts like everything in the constant is in they’re knowledge but really they are just as stupid as the next guy. This is an idea I got from this video thanks I loved it and it was pretty fun although it probably won’t go anywhere more than just a couple drawings while I’m bored in school
I've been wanting to write dialogue for some characters in base ds but I got no idea how to acutally upload it to steam nor do I have the knowledge to actually make it a patch for uploading in the first place. I cant really find anything anywhere, but I still appreciate your video even if it is a year old. Heaven forbid theres any convenient references on how to mod for this game
I don't have programing skills but here's my idea: Warbler the Artician, gains sanity when drawing on a character specific canvas,writing on signs, or cartographing, gains more hunger from things made with 🌶️, comes to the constant with a brush and canvas, didn't sleep until they make art but tents will still work for less hunger, losses sanity around spiders(minus webber) hope you like this
I'm sorry, but this kinda sounds like a mess. He is basically Wilson but borderline free sanity (there isn't a lot of good food woth pepper, and you generally don't sit around spiders)

The art i think would be the easiest for me since i own a graphic tablet and been drawing for a long time. But i know nothin and i mean NOTHIN about programming. I have to give this video a downvote. I, probably like others, were expecting this video to have some info on how to get started with the programming aspect of making a mod. That's arguably the most important piece (without it there is no mod). I understand you said it's not a programming video, but you should have included some resources, links, something to help people get started with the programming aspect. After watching this I learning good theory to making a character, but no idea how to actually go about starting to do it from a technical perspective. Imo this video could be titled something like, “The theory on designing your own DST character.”
I would say arguably the design is the most important part.(I'm saying this as someone who's mainly a modder programmer for DST) Sure you might be able to make a mod with programming knowledge, but if it's not well designed, then it falls apart super fast haha.
