Thank you for one of the best episodes of the WellRED podcast. Love this discussion of cultural context and writing. And Rod Serling was one of the greats. You're right about him.
California Dreamin' made me want to go see CA and when I was 25 and my family had gone to San Jose, I drove across the U.S. by myself and joined them. After having been raised in New England where "all the leaves are brown" made a lot of sense, I stayed in Silicon Valley for just under 15 years. Hollywood and Los Angeles are not California. The Mamas & Papas were from the San Francisco/Berkeley area.
Don’t they sing “..I’d be safe and warm if I was in L.A.” ?
Hey fellers! I really needed a chuckle this evening and y'all provided it. Fake-lord bless ya, much obliged!
Your comment made me smile. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.
6:34 unsolicited music theory fun fact: minor chords give a haunting spooky vibe to all the songs. It a good starting point when you want to make that kind of music
I remember that song as a kid in Beaumont Texas. In 1967 my parents tell me we're flying to California and in 1968 we moved to California. So my time as a child hearing the song , then the California Dreamin came true. So happy I was transpanted to California from Texas " Saudi Howdy". MLK was killed in April of 68 , we left in June . My parents weren't having anymore of the unrest in the south.
When I first heard that song I was living in the midwest working as a field engineer. I flew to California often and the song really impacted me in the winter when I would get on a plane in the cold, snowy weather with bare trees and brown leaves blowing around. Then I would get off the plane a few hours later in CA and the flowers were blooming, trees/grass was green and it was mind blowing to a young engineer who had grown up in the midwest with long winters. BTW I love the song and it never felt negative or weird to me just a coastal California person living away from home in the fall or winter and being homesick for the warm, sunny California weather.
When I hear "California Dreaming", first I think of Mama Cass's death, and then I think of "Punk Rock Girl" by The Dead Milkmen, which references it. Both are great songs.
And The Dead Milkmen attributed it to The Beach Boys in PRG and it confused all teens at that time 😂
...." If you ain't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin'...."🎶
The song California Dreaming is about faith and the Church letting you down. Reminds me of the bullshit Trump does
Being a born and raised native California girl, I always loved California Dreaming. It never was dark or eerie for me.
Cory, you could have her dye your beard rainbow and be Ally Santa for the start of pride month. Lol 🌈
Ngl. I’m kinda hoping he goes pink with glitter.
All that albino talk made me think of the Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein.
Capricorn One is a 1978 British-produced American thriller film in which a reporter discovers that a supposed Mars landing by a crewed mission to the planet has been faked via a conspiracy involving the government and-under duress-the crew themselves.
Is that why Cattlecar Galaxitive went to Caprica?
Sounds like a shout out.
Didn't watch 'em but was glad when I heard Lucy Lawless was working.
That’s it! Was trying to remember the name of the movie.
Rod Serling is a legend. He was awesome. He was a leftist.
Drews always late. We sang California Dreamin in middle school chorus🤣
I’m only four minutes and thirty-six seconds in, and it’s clear Trae is thinking of the song that begins “All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray, while Corey and Morgan think he means the song which starts “Well east coast girls are hip, I really dig those styles they wear.” He can’t get them to stop thinking “California Girls.” He even says “Mamas and the Papas” and they praise Brian Wilson. I’m sure this gets cleared up at some point in the video but it’s killing me.
born in nj loved california came back to nj oy
The original Twilight Zone is by far my most favorite show of all time!! U guys are awesome
🥰💙💙💙
There is not a single Beach Boys song that even resembles California Dreaming
The Warmth of the Sun is similar but my Beach Boys favorites are Kokomo and Good Vibrations.
Creepy song, The end of the world, by Skeeter Davis. Gives me the creeps/goosebumps every time I hear it. Give me a Mike's hard lemonade or cranberry anytime. All Hollywood does nowadays is make remakes.
I always loved Skeeter Davis
Girl, Interrupted
Santa jowls 😂. Exactly right, I’ve been thinking wtf happened to Corey’s face the whole time.
All flee before the dread pirate Yellowbeard!
Beard!😮
You guys are cracking me up
Night Gallery
Teenage crush on Rod Serling. Mad at him when he died of lung cancer.
The age is 50 in New York to check IDs for alcohol sales.
The Beach Boys covered “California Dreamin’” for an ‘80s best of collection. They filmed a video, which definitely was cinematic. It was black & white, filmed in a church, and featured Papa John Phillips & his ex-wife Mama Michelle Phillips (they wrote the song after all). It also featured former Byrds guitarist Roger McGuinn on 12-string guitar.
I knew Drew would come out swinging about the beard. Thanks for not disappointing.
California dreaming, makes me remember the original Scooby Doo show that my mother watched on television when it was new, and I saw as a kid while i was getting ready for school in the eighties.
Props for the Timbers cap!
If you want to see an example of hustle from that era, check out husband/wife author duo Henry Kuttner and C.L. Moore.
Timbers Army!
Hey Corey and Trae: Not the moon landing, but there was a movie from the late 1970's called Capricorn 1 about a reporter who discovered that a manned mission to Mars had been faked, and there was a huge government conspiracy around it.
Transparent persons.
Score, Drew!
I didn't care about all Rod Serling's stories, but his quotes were brilliant. "We're raising a generation of people who know all about automobiles and cereal but won't be able to think." He sure got that right.
Drew nailed that looking younger thing when you're skinny/ old and you gain just a little bit of weight, it fills out the wrinkles a bit and all of a sudden people are like you look young... for your age...
California Dreaming always reminds me of my time at Fort Bragg, NC in the 70's. Wishing I was back home.
Films have to be at least 25 years old, and still be able to hold its own in viewership figures, to be a classic.
“California Dreamin'" is a song written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips in 1963 and first recorded by Barry McGuire.[5] The best-known version is by the Mamas & the Papas, who sang backup on the original version and released it as a single in December 1965.
Jose Feliciano’s version of California Dreamin was a coming of age song for me.
Cho's most interesting depictions are right on ... John & Michelle Phillips did a bang up job with the whole thing ... Michelle added the lyrics about going to the Church part ... Helped color that lonely song ... the airy flute, too ... All of it ...
Point of reference...
I graduated from high school in 1975, so my era would essentially be about one year earlier than the movie "Dazed and Confused". We were calling music from the late '50s and early '60s "classic oldies". We were very judgmental of older music, but we were fond of some of it. So that's about 15 years. Has that time lag really changed that much? At some points in the last 10 or 15 years, I thought the lag has shortened, maybe because of the influence of social media. I don't really know.
Also, our nostalgia craze really slammed home when American Graffiti came out, even though those kids were about 12 years older than we were. That's when the '50s craze really grabbed hold and we all jumped on board. So our nostalgia suddenly deepened by about 12 years. Movies have a huge influence on nostalgia.
Drew I feel ya man. Whenever I hear a Beach Boys tune I get all nostalgic for Junior Samples. 🎶
Cory looks translucent. That’s my 5 dollar word of the day. Skew 🤙🏽
California Dreamin' on the radio: 3rd grade, Murray NE.
Mom pouncing on "you know the preacher likes the cold: he knows I'm gonna stay", for cynicism.
Me glad I didn't care about being in CA.
Corey looks like grownup Kenny from the South Park future special
You're opener was really good in OKC. Some of his set was over their heads but he did well
It's amazing how critical we all are of ourselves. We can't just say thank you when someone says we look good. Idk y.
Cory looking like a Swedish Santa. Drew giving every dude who wrote to his sweetheart in Ken Burns "Civil War", both sides. Trae looking like Ron Livingston in Office Space.
Yeah, you should all talk at the same time.
On the pope - his 2 languages are Spanish and Italian, and he claims that he thought he was saying a word for gay community in Italian. False cognates are a thing...BUT, apparently he got no pushback - either because of deferring to authority or because, and hear me out; this may sound crazy: the Catholic Church is still pretty homophobic.
I do agree with Corey that Pope Francis is the most woke pope - ever. Still, some habits die hard. I'm glad I'm not religious; it keeps me out of some bad community behaviors.
Omg Slim Jim Shady 🤣🤣🤣🤣 DO IT COREY
Eddie Hazel's version of "California Dreamin' " is well worth your time.
During the '80s, I remember the shit-ton of '60s nostalgia that pervaded pop culture. Oldies radio was huuuuuge! I grew up listening to music from the 60s as a result. I LOVED that stuff, and the California pop really hit for me back then.
Beach Boys and "California Dreamin'". I blame that on The Dead Milkmen...they ascribed it to "The Beach Boys" in "Punk Rick Girl"
"And someone played a Beach Boys' song on the jukebox. It was 'California Deamin'' so we started screamin' on such a winter's day..."
California dreaming has the most beautiful harmony's. Cass Elliot's daughter Owen Elliot Kunkel just published a biography of her mom called my mama Cass. I hear it's really good
Corey suggests a fake moon landing movie when there is one on the way out.
"Fly Me To the Moon" is the title.
I love California Dreamin'. Not creepy or eerie, but sadly nostalgic and melancholic longing.
The Mamas and The Papas hit in general. And they did a lot of acid.
Vice city brought Me back to watching Miami vice and scarface as a kid. Im still having trouble thinking of 2008 as a different time than now.
Love the beard Corey!
Twilight Zone is fuckin’ amazing.
Hey! Bing Bong on the big hour and rock n roll comin' atcha!
This is why there are so many albinos in Botswana - because their rights are protected.
Douglas Adams wrote some Dr Who. Maybe Graham Chapman, too.
Meanwhile in the UK they are all like wtf is wrong with cigarettes in seminary.
😂😂
I agree with Corey about California Dreamin'. My parents listened to a lot of the music of their childhood during our childhood. I like really old music from the late 50s early 60s like Jan & Dean and Del Shannon. Thanks mom
I’m from Buffalo!! It’s a great place.
Edgar Winter or Johnny Winter
I got carded at 40 at a gas station in ATL right next to the Battery (Braves Stadium). He was Indian too. We look good 😎
I'm a red head and did sunscreen moisturizer from my late teens, I got carded at 45...the cashier told me I was the same age as her mom. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.
The old radio version of dragnet rocks. It's on you tube
In the 70s I lived overseas and listened to Armed Forces Radio. The shadow knows and reruns of Burns and Allen were my favorites. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.
Don’t forget the pride of Texas, genius albinos Johnny and Edgar Winter! 👍
Lol, you don't see many translucent folks (Albinos- the other "trans"-lucent.) because much like vampires they burst into flames in direct sunlight.
Shout out to Edgar and Johnny Winter.❄️
"Moonwalkers" with Ron Perlman... :)
Talking about albinos, ya'll ought to get Nathan Hurd on here. Dude's a black albino and funny as hell.
I had a very long rant written and deleted it. In short - black-and-white films used light and shadows to create the mood of every scene, now virtually a lost art. Films from the first "talkies" through the "golden age" of filmmaking relied on the words and the delivery of those words by the actors to tell the story - they lacked computer-generated anything. Comedy was created by carefully crafted lines that were crisp and quick, delivered smartly by talented actors who could also do physical comedy if required, some better than others. Lots of movies classified as "film noir B-films" had better dialogue than some of today's biggest box office smashes. Every word mattered because there was no computer-generated anything with a green screen setting the scene. Apples to oranges.
Cho was attacked by a group of Marshall Mathers fans insisting he go full MM on his chin.
The Beach Boys did a cover of the song. Members of The Mamas & The Papas wrote it.
I was trying to think of some artist who is prolific and theres only two I can think of...Audie Murphy, the cherubic killer and today the Welsh singer Ren.
Mafia III is a GTA type game that takes place in the 70s and there's plenty of classic rock to listen to as you drive around town.
Drew didn't need to tell us that he's gay, we all already knew that. 😂
😅 and we don't care anyway. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.
10:20 the Hulk, wrong answers only, lol.
Trae should dye his beard blue, then you'd have red, white (sort of) and blue beards :D
There was a movie called Capricorn One that was about faking the Mar's landing from the 70s
The beard! Chiiiiiild... what were you thinking? Okay. Right now, you look like Burl Ives. Dye it white, you're going to look like Ernest Hemingway. Which could hit for you... I don't know.
"The Nght Gallery" was on when I was in high school ....
Hey Trae! I don't see you scheduled to do your Stand-up here in Chico or Sacramento...how bout it
Trevor Noah: Day Walker. In South African black village life albeano was euphemism for mixed babies brought home from the city by their moms.
Other albeanos were jealous that Trevor got less sunburn.
Corey looks like the Albino from Me, Myself , and Irene.
Trae Crowder and Cory Forester are what I look for in a Man ♂️🌈🇺🇸💕🇺🇸🌈♂️
57:56 Yes, the moon landing being faked was a four episode arc on American Horror Story Season 10 episodes 7-10. Specifically episode 9 is about it.
Corey looks like a leprechaun. Won't affect anything? How did his son react? I had wondered what was up with Drew's beard.
That said...
In Star Trek Beyond, to defeat the enemy they had to disrupt their communications, so they played the Beastie Boys. When it starts to play, McCoy asks Spock "Is that Classical music?" and Spock replies "Yes, Doctor, I believe it is."
love you trae
The beginning sounds like Hal Sparks
Netflix's Captain Fall episode 5 features the bad guys tricking albinos onto a cruise (for not good reasons).
That song sounds like seasonal depression to me
I never really thought about it much but that song does make you feel some type of way...🤔
"Gone in 60 seconds", 1974
In Oklahoma one had to id card anyone under certain age. Until new legislation that has been recently signed by the Governor ending it. Though they insisted that the congressman that sponsored the bill did so because he had a 90 something year old friend that was carded. They didn't explain why the 90 year old went to the liquor store without i.d. The only person that would id a 90 yr old is someone worried that they would be caught not doing it and being fired.
I remember hearing California dreaming when watching (I think) the hills have eyes (the remake not the original)
I definitely know what you mean………
Have you heard about Bruce Meneley in seattle? Why is this not making the news?
I am straight-up allergic to some types of hops. There are some IPAs that I can't finish because of all the sneezing.
💙💙💙💙
Serling, the OG. The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. Classic parallel tell of paranoia of immigrants today. So far ahead of it's time.
