My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!
Thank you! It is so great to hear about pure and good friendships that DON’T turn into romance! P. S. I am working on a book with a boy and a girl with such a friendship.
I know right?! I love stories about good friendships that STAY friendships. I am also writing a story with a boy and girl best friend relationship and I'm loving it!
Gonna watch again later. Will join the training. Also, people in platonic relationships can acknowledge how gorgeous their friend is, right?
@@rangarajan7843 Absolutely!
@@rangarajan7843yes! Definitely! Absolutely!
Same! Only one main romance and 3 budding platonic friendships
SO HYPED for this one!! Platonic relationships are so important in a story and I just love them so much😍
But it's kind of hard to find books with only close friends. I like romance, but everytime i open a book everyone are dating. Sometimes you just want to appreciate the other important relationships.
@@vikaziza1506 ugh I totally agree!!
Thanks, Abbie. I have had many platonic friendships with women. I think one way to make such real in a story is never to write them as neutered (androgynous): My friendship with a woman is different from my friendship with a man; while I do not flirt with a platonic friend (I realize some men do), I do acknowledge her womanhood and femininity. Platonic does not mean neutered.
Yes, secrets (and in-jokes) are important and effective. My preferred kind of secret is one that is not selfish or malicious, but one necessitated by greater circumstances and other loyalties: more inherent - and inherited - conflict. That complicates the ensuing suspicion and distrust, causing more internal conflict for the protagonist, who may understand the need yet feel betrayed.
I am currently pulling my hair out trying to fix this in my second draft. Perfect timing! Thanks Abbie!!
Im writing a strangers to lovers story but i wanted the friendship to be normal and slow burny as much as the friends to lovers, so thank you Abbie right on time ❤
FINALLY! A course on writing just good ol basic friendship. Not of the friends to lovers variety. There's actually no romance at all in my WIP but there's two platonic friendships at the heart of it. One that my protagonist has had since forever, and another that blossoms throughout the story. I want the reader to care about and root for both. To sign up, is there a specific patreon tier we have to select or will any do to be eligible?
This video is hopefully going to help me a lot in my story.
Because I just want to have a little hint of a romance in it, next to nothing really, but mostly platonic relationships.
Thanks for this advice.
Love this video!! Whenever I read a novel or watch a tv show or a movie. I'm always interested in the relationships and the dynamics between the characters. Particularly on platonic relationships. I find it so interesting of how all of the characters react to each other. So, when i saw this video it made me feel so happy. In my current WIP I have characters who are coworkers at the Protagonist's workplace.
This was so fantastic!! I am currently writing a book with twins, and this helped entirely with creating a healthy relationship between them. Thank you so much!!
Thank you, I actually really needed this to confirm somethings I was working through
Hi Abbie, I just found your channel, may I say you are one of the most intelligent person I ever met. Someone who's thought is so clear and organize! Just love the way you present yourself! Keep up the great work!
This is so cool Abby!!! Thank you so much for this video!!! I think this will help me with some of my own characters!!!! Thank you so much I really needed this video!!!!
So my WIP is a fantasy and mc is a queen (kinda) but her in her own words most loyal solider and first knight/second in command is her bff from childhood. They were separated when they were young but are reunited by the time the story begins. even though they're friends there is also a hierarchy. So not only am i balancing a platonic friendship but also the superior and underling dynamic.🙃
one movie i watched i was so happy to see that a guy and a girl were just friends but then turns out he was just saying he was gay because of a rumour and then they fell in love eventhough the girl loved someone else
I watched the training live and Abbie answered my question in the Q & A at the end. The trainings are SO worth the time and membership. Thank you Abbie!
omg i literally needed this sooo much. There is hardly anything on writing platonic relationships and i love those relationships that dont turn romantic. Thank you soooo much abbie!!
Exactly what I needed!!!! My story is focussing on mainly platonic relationships and this helps a lot.
Abbie your videos have brought this vague book idea i had to life!!! Now I’m more pumped than ever to write it and create the world for it! Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So stoked for the live training! You're one of the best at writing platonic relationships, Abbie. I adore your relationships between brothers and best friends in all your books 😍
I normally hate emails from websites or CZcamsrs, but I really appreciate yours. I'm so packed with with work and personal life, every time I get your email, it reminds me I have a passion for writing and to continue
Love this! Platonic relationships are essential in a story! I've recently been having a hard time figuring it out, but when I came across this video, I was so happy!
This is really helpful, I've got two characters who have known each other for years. But also a few friendships that start in the story. So I want to make them feel different. This really helps with that.
Thank you so much Abbie for this. I was actually struggling to create a platonic relationship in my current WIP, and your points are really helpful ❤
Thanks so much! I've already written my novel, but I want to make it better before submitting it to my publisher. It's gratifying to hear from this video, that a lot of what you talked about in here, I've already done with my character relationships. Only without really understanding the actual principles of what I was doing, with conflict and backstory and secrets from one another and all that. Armed with the info from this video, I believe I can improve and build on what I already have. Thanks again!
This is so cool! Thank you so much for this post. I have two characters, Damu and Kamaria, and are friends, but they have a strained relationship now, but it'll take time for them to heal. They are both in different relationships.
Thank you! This is one of the best episodes you have ever created 🌹
Yes! I loved this so much!! Platonic relationships mean so much to me 💗
Looking forward to the livestream this weekend!
This is great Abbie - so helpful!
Great ideas. You have put so much thought into things. Very helpful. Thanks
Just watch the late Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in the past Fast and Furious movies - including the very first one. That is how you write a beautiful best bro/brotherly relationship with a great arc and journey. The ending of Fast & Furious VII is beautiful.
Thank you Abbie!! ❤️
You know the video is good, when it has 15 Minutes, but I need 2 hours for it bc I constantly pause to write something about my characters! Thank you Abbie!
@AbbieEmmons this is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much!
#AskAbbie A question: I am writing a mystery-comedy novel, and I have to make it 80k words. But the problem is, I can't seem to write the novel that long 😅 and to top it off, it has a lot of different plots, like super important side stories and side character backstories.
Do you have any tips on how I can write an 80k words novel like that without making it too confusing and annoying?
Thanks a lot!
Thank you Abbie for posting and sharing your six tips on the subject, but there has to be more to it than what you explained in this video. Plus, wouldn't there be a difference when writing a first, second or third POV story? Have a wonderful day.
Thanks for this. I have watched a botched platonic relationship in an imported show that was rereleased in the last decade.
I really enjoy your researched approach and examples from other authors that you usually bring to the table. Are you planning to add that in your training?
thxx for much wisdom
GEE YESSS!! I finally found a good video! I have a story idea about two inseparable best friends, until one is tragically murdered. I have already watched the videos about flashbacks and dialogue. If there is anyone who is willing to give me tips, I'm all ears!
Thanks a lot for this, I’m writing a story where a guy and a girl are best friends (sort of) and they’re dealing with a lot of difficulties together because of their families and environment
Use it when you’re confident and grown-up at the end.
Good job Abbie!
(Lame relationships are the WORST!)
THX FOR ANOTHER AWESOME VIDEO!
Lizzy and Booker in Changeling by Arista Holmes have a best friend/sibling relationship that's great. No romance, and lots of banter.
Unrelated but I can't stop thinking about The Otherworld even though I finished reading it two weeks ago.
Thanks for uploading such a great content. Your videos are saviour for the beginners like us.❤️❤️❤️
Can you please upload one video on how to write family dramas and tell us the ways how to generate ideas fast like almost instantly.. i would really appreciate that
All about the platonomy!
I would like to stop the people who’re considering that way out now itself…..we don’t forget and earth is eternally empalmed.
I'm writing my first book and I definitely can't write a romance so I'm looking for any way to avoid that. This helped.
#AskAbbie I have questions for u:
1.Can u make a video on the Ultimate Insta love story structure with a printable PDF?
2.What is the 2nd Plot Point called in the 2nd act of your 3-act story structure?
3.Is it okay if I only use the Hook, the inciting incident, the 1st Plot Point for the beginning, the 1st Pinch Point, The Midpoint and the 2nd Pinch Point, The 2nd Plot Point for the Middle and the Crisis, the Climax and the Resolution for the End of my insta love romance outline?
Thank you for explaining! Cause m more of a Sucker for platonic friendships. I feel like these relationships are so overlooked by people?
I love your videos!! Thank you for teaching me these things!!
very nice.
A lot of brainstorming to do. Fortunately, I'm in the brainstorming phase of [one of] my next project[s]. No romance planned.
I recently made my own youtube channel and your videos really inspire me. I am also working on my own book and i hope to have as many subscribers as you one day
Abbie, would it be possible for you to post these live trainings on CZcams for those unable to make it due to financial difficulties and unable to watch them.
When is the next livestream? I have a bunch of questions and I'm in dire need of answers lol.
Hi Abbie- is it still possible to watch a reply of your live training on platonic characters? I was not signed up and just discovered your channel. Thanks Shari
I dont have any platonic friends so this video is a godsend
Hii Abbie, it was great video, supper helpful, however i have a question.
I'm just wondering if it's definitely required to follow all six principles in order to develop a solid plotanic connection that leaves the reader thinking, "I want a friend like that in my life."
because of the fourth point (keeping secrets). what. If there isn't much action/drama in my protagonist's life that they would like to keep a secret.
Abbie I am new to writing and I love to write a series of books that is a adventure thriller but through this series of books I want to make a slow burn romance 💕 do you have any advice for me
As a new writer you are a life saver your videos are just ❤❤❤❤
As a guy, I can say, most plutonic relationships are NOT that way because both want it that way. In fact, many of the girls who were just friends wanted more from me... and you would expect it to be the other way around.
At 58, I have been increasingly informed that the women I thought were like my sisters, in fact, wanted it to be more.
I say this so that the reality of showing how one person is a friend and the other wanted more is important narrative fuel.
Sure, I have had a very few female friends I wanted to be more, but generally no.
I'm new to writing and going into poetry. What are some tips for writing a poetry book
Abbey can also talk to anybody she feels like talking to.
Hey abby, how do you get the balance between to much dialog in a scene and not enough?
Abbey Emmons can also talk to anybody she feels like.
Classically Abbey will talk to people I feel like she can talk to.
I'm dead now. Will get to you by tomorrow morning
Can you provide examples like you used to? I'm a very visual learner and it's a bit hard to wrap my head around it😅😅
Abbie Emmons and Hazel Thayer will have all of earth’s data.
However I wanted to ask something PLEASE ❤
Can like healthy green flag boyfriend's have that intense kinda love?? Like since they value duty n everything....n that whole villain can burn the city for you thing....can't heroes ever love with that intensity????( * in a non-supernatural universe)
How do you write this down? I use Character Templates but they never adress this topic and give a good possibility to cross over character relationships without getting totally confused because you would have to write it down multiple times (in every character template) and without it becoming unmanageable because one change would have to be changed in multiple character charts.
I hope I can make myself clear, english isn't my mothertongue :)
All data in matters, masses, ‘vacuums’, vacuums and energies in all spaces and emptinesses is to be transferred to Hazel Thayer and Abbie Emmons, immediately.
What do you do for a living?
Don’t mess with the wind.
M Night Shyamalan has access to all my thoughts about him.
Oh…I forgot about these videos. These were suppressed I guess. Will talk to you personally when you come here about this
I often feel as if you are teaching things about people and life.... real stories... not just fiction.
Relatable books are the best kind.
Samsung will transfer all the data to Hazel Thayer. Thank you, Apple.
So, now that you know who I’m…
You cant stop the shippers
Facts lol
I’m writing a five book series where in the first book the MC (a boy) has a platonic relationship with his best friend that’s a girl and my MC doesn’t meet a potential love interest until book two and even then they’re just friends at first; but I’m kind of expecting ppl to ship him with his best friend from the first book even though they’re relationship is more like siblings.
im sorry all i can focus on is the clock in the background. cursed oversensitive hearing.
Hey….I really want to meet you. Can you fly to India? If you really care…after making all those videos, you’ll come. You don’t understand how much you mean to me
Hi how are you you're looking beautiful and sweet what is your name, you're eyes very beautiful
Simple : don't write it from man's perspective 🙃 (jk jk 😄)
I have a question. Do you still not read reviews of your books? Why? Don't you think you could learn from them? The ones to 100DOS all point out really problematic aspects of the book you should really look into. Cause if you don't, they will find their way into your stories again and again and your books will never reach full potential because they will all have the same problems. They are not about writing techniques. Writing stuff is really debatable anyway. They are about content. Like the romanticization of unconsentual romantic interaction (Weston and Tessa's first kiss). And the younger generation, aka the target audience of "ya contemporary romance" just doesn't find such things acceptable anymore. You not reading reviews at all is like a "screw your opinion, you don't have anything of substance to say, I know everything better" to your readers. I get not wanting to engage with hateful people. But most hateful people are too lazy to read anyway. I've never come across a purely hateful review. Just ones that make good points and explain them thoroughly.
Took lots of notes from the incredible advice you shared, cheers!
i’ve been struggling with this recently, thank you!! 🩷
This is just what I need rn! Tysm Abbie!! 🤍📖
