I have seen a lot of videos out there already doing winter weather predictions. Even the Farmer's almanac was putting out a prediction for winter weather a month or two ago! All it is is total clickbait! You got nobody to blame but yourself if you fall for it. Mitch is absolutely right. I'm glad he keeps it real, honest and genuine. I'd much rather have the way Mitch West does the weather then all the hype clickbait and lies in the world. If you don't like Mitch's videos you're welcome to watch the watch clickbait. Not being mean it just makes no sense to expect something from this platform that you're not going to get.

Definitely chilly here in NW Indiana today. Woke up to 48° weather. Slowly climbing its way up it’s now 62°. I will take it though, much better than 100 degree weather 😂
The ITCZ looks so weird - it's actually moving east instead of west. The westerlies are so vigorous toward Africa that nothing can spin up, not to mention the dry air intruding at the same time to the north. Just massive, broad tropical waves that don't do much. I expect waves are going to continue to struggle across the MDR for a while longer, which is probably not good news for the seedlings that end up in the Caribbean and closer to the US come mid September.
When does it start to feel like we’re living under a polyester hefty trash bag again here in NYC? Right now it feels wonderful with refreshing cool air.
About seasonal forecasts… I have seen some of them. Usually, most people just put the climatological normal and then adds whatever the El Niño southern oscillation would change. The reason they get the views, as you said, is they give the people what they want. They want to see hype.

As I have seen over the last couple of years seeing a shift in patterns compared to what I remember over the last 40+ years, it could well be that climate change may be a factor, if not the factor. As you said, the more experienced and knowledgeable in the weather field don’t know what is happening. The models use a bunch of data that has been recorded. If we have recent changes that comprises a small set of data compared to the overall data set, the overall trend will overpower the emerging data. This would impact longer term prediction, such as seasonal and hurricane seasonal forecasts. This is how science works. As changes start appearing, research needs to adjusted to look at making changes to how the models make predictions. It is most likely being done, as academic research occurs without being made public until the results have some sort of verification. Because the changes/trend we see have occurred over a relatively short period of time (compared to the overall weather data collected), the science won’t do a drastic change to forecasting based on the very short term data without some validation. Otherwise, a “panic” could occur. The “Chicken Little, the sky is falling” reaction. Most scientists will be more reserved in stating conclusion while doing research using the short term to see new possible trends and how these predictions match what is really happening. I agree with Mitch and not making seasonal forecasts or “number of named hurricanes”. If you look at 10 to 30 day forecasts on the respected weather apps and how they change as the time draws closer based on more recent occurrences. For example, looking at 15 days out and the prediction says it will be 90 and sunny to find out when that day arrives, the day is actually 70 and pouring rain. We need to be patient. Thanks Mitch for all your.

I was a chemistry professor and get research. I was a dean over a division that included a weather program with storm chasing as well. I spent a lot of time with that program as I was the “money guy”.
It is a chaotic system with many variables...predictions based on a limited data set (we only have maybe 30 years of detailed climate data..sea temps, Sahara desert data, solar input, etc) still a small data set on something so complicated. We will get better with time and more data.
I think the problem with the La Niña stuff is that the La Niña hasn't come yet as of me making this comment, and on top of that when it does come it's going to be a lot weaker than previously thought. The EURO model is forecasting only a peak of -0.6 in January. It could still change but this year seems similar to 1966 in terms of the ENSO climatology, starting with a strong El Niño that fades into negative neutral, then weak La Niña later in the year/early the next year
Not mostly everywhere. We don’t get long lasting September like air masses like this in the South in Mid August. I don’t remember the last one that will last this long. Definitely normal stuff up that way, not down here. This is mid to late September type stuff for us.
