As a South African, the tokoloshe doesn’t scare me as much as politicians
Fellow South African here and I 100% agree with you
Fellow South African here. Be sure to put your beds on bricks or paint tins tonight. 😂😂
I'm only scared of one thing. Taxes....😱
Certain "Africans" in the USA are more scary.
Texas? Me too. Totally scared of Texas. I think it might come for me in the night!
Imagine selling the soul of a loved one to summon an evil that can't even get off the floor
Yeah but if it gets to your head, it can make you eat people by whispering in your ear
Very true 😮
Nice opinion unfortunately I am inside your house
"I bought my revenge demon on Wish"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for covering the Tokoloshe. I'm South African so I've been accustomed to seeing beds on bricks or paint tins, although that was mostly in my youth. I think it is less likely to happen in urban areas now.
The first time I heard about the Tokoloshe was when I was about 10 years old. We lived on a farm and one of our workers claimed he had been walking through the veld the previous night when a Tokoloshe chased him. He ran as fast as he could and the Tokoloshe got hold of his jacket. Somehow he wriggled out of it and so got away from the Tokoloshe.
For superstitious Africans the Tokoloshe is very real.
I just sent this video to my South African friend and as soon as I said the name she’s like oh yeah I know about that see I’m not from South Africa. I’m from Syria, so I understand Jinn things of that nature which is honestly kind of similar, but it’s obviously a very big thing there and I believe in all of this shit
@@mikemickel 🤣🤣🤣
@@jordanalandry1866 I'm a South African Muslim and I can confirm it is real from personal experience(just saw it). The tokoloshi is actually summoned by witch doctors with the intent to cause harm to an individual. It's definitely a form of Jinn.
It makes sense to sleep on raised beds to make it harder for vermin to get at you. In such an environment it's only logical that folklore warning against sleeping at floor level would be generated.
Whars a Veld?.
Always interesting to hear supernatural tales from around the world
The hat man emoji 😱
Wait... how come my keyboard has no Hat Man emoji? Are there Black Eyed Kids emojis?!!
So an undead body risen from the grave, shrunken and possessed by a demon can not go higher than 3ft by any means? Talk about not being able to GET IT UP!!!

@@stevenfunderburg1623 it’s for members of the channel I believe, it’s like a subscription but it helps the creator and you get little perks
I’m really glad how you guys didn’t gloss over how often this “demon” is blamed for domestic violence, rape, and murder. And how you pointed out CO poisoning as a possibility for why beds need to be raised. CO is heavier than oxygen so people on the floor are extra vulnerable.
As for the CO poisoning, it makes the most sense to me because I experienced it one winter night when I was young
CO is known to have caused hallucinations in some cases, would explain "sightings".
Yeah I like how people just Boogeyman to explain away why the hell they raped someone or why they murdered their wife
CO is slightly less than air. It rises, however, it does explain hallucinations, and it also diffuses evenly through the room.
@@TheUglyFish And all those people hallucinated exactly the same thing, huh?
The elevated beds and the demonic activity don't need to be connected at all.
Good story. Next time one of those scammers from Nigeria sends me a message on fb I'm going to tell them I'm sending a tokoloshe to get them😂😂😂😂
😆👍
The video itself aside, massive props for doing the click in "Xhosa"; in the few instances where I've seen someone say the word previously they seldom attempted the click.
Thank you for propping him on the click! I wanted to as well, but figured to check the comments first and it took a lot of scrolling surprisingly. Really impressed with Richard!
The narration on these is always Hella satisfying but that was just *chefs kiss*
I actually finally figured out how to say Xhosa correctly with the click from him doing it in this video. I'm not bragging, it's the bare minimum I can do as a white American, but there was a level of confidence that I could make my mouth make that sound that was added by hearing someone from an English-first country say it.
i read ahead in the subtitles and i didn't think he'd hit it. imagine my surprise when he did. super impressed.
I look forward to Bedtime/Wartime Stories more than any other channel... by miles. This style and the amount of work that goes in to these vids are well worth the wait. The wait makes it that much more of an event to me.
Agreed. No other show gets me excited like theirs. It gives me the same feeling as watching unsolved mysteries as a kid. Great show
Me and my Gf feel the same . I think I get more excitedbefore wartime stories and them smoke pit tales are my favorite.

Fuck YEAH! I'm not working for the summer I could live for one every week but I know they put ao much into each episode that's unrealistic
get a life
What an interesting creature, a monster that's basically a supernatural "Hitman" with a funny weakness to heights, it's always cool hearing about foreign "Boogeyman" style monsters.
Also, that ending scene was pure gold. Lol
It’s kind of like Puppet Master (1989)

I remember when I was little (in the 80's), our nanny had her bed's legs stacked on bricks. Having seen this in many black ladies' maid's quarters, I asked her why and she told me it is to keep the Tokoloshe from climbing up her bed's legs.
Imagine her horror when I, as an 8 year old, reminded her that he could just climb up the bricks to climb up the bed! 😂😂😂
Very true. If they do exist they probably would figure out ways to climb up.
@@mirandagoldstine8548I'm thinking it does not prevent the demon from anything, it is just an attempt by people to fight/evade what they can not comprehend.
I would love an episode about the Japanese ghost, the Teki Teki. It's a horrifying story, really scary.
What about Godzilla ⁉️🇯🇵
Japanese urban legends were merely exaggeration nowadays
You mean teke teke?
@@Nightwalk444 Yeah, I spelled it wrong.
That's the ghost that walks on its hands right?
I think the Tokoloshe's inability to climb up a bed lifted off the ground is meant to stem from them being dead things, bound to the ground. Sure they can get inside a house but leaving the floor, the bottom, is difficult for them. Though this is also discredited that it can then climb a person and sit on their shoulders quiet high off the ground.
So is the top floor of the apartment considered the ground still?
Perhaps they do need the vantage point of getting higher up, but they can only do so on the shoulders of a person that they’ve enthralled? When they don’t have that attachment to a living person, I guess staying off the ground might cause them sickness or a depletion of energy? Assuming one were an investigator, or an Isangoma, Amagqirha, Ngaka or Selaoli, or another local wise person, one might experiment with trying to both trap the Tokoloshe, and lift it off the ground, to see if that renders it too weak to do anything. I dare say this has probably been tried many times, though, if we’re to assume there’s any truth to this folklore.
In the Caribbean, particularly Trinidad and Guyana, this is referred to as a “buck”. There has been recent sightings of this entity.
And in Malaysia, it is referred to as a “toyol”. In Indonesia, it is referred to as a “tuyul”.

CHUPACAMBRA!!!!!!👹
Can you say anymore about it? What does it look like? There are many strange things out there… I saw a craft flying near my moms house not even 3 weeks ago. Have no clue what it was but nothing the public knows about.
Greetings from Namibia and a long time subscriber. Here in Namibia we also talk about the Tokoloshe. Nice seeing something on this channel that is close to home.
this channel never disappoints.
And Wartime stories either.
I love Bedtime and Wartime stories. I just wish they'd drop episodes more often!
Wartime stories I can understand because it's a 1 man job (and he does it better than BTS tbh, and uploads more regularly!), but BTS is an entire team 😕
as a south african and a huge fan of your channel, thank you for this! I love seeing stories and mysteries from my country/region
!
I have an old book in Afrikaans about various ghosts and famous urban legends here (not just the Uniondale ghost, and also a short but terrifying story about a tokoloshe).

The real mystery in South Africa is what the hell is going on there in the past couple of years. Y'all falling apart. Maybe it's a balance for selling out to China.
Hope to see more! I've heard some really great scary tales about hauntings in South African prisons.
The scariest thing about South Africa is real life... get the F outta there.
Dude I cannot listen to these at bedtime. The music, imagery and stories make me revert back to thinking my blanket is a shield. 😆
I watched every episode in this channel and have come to appreciate the level-headedness and unbiased approach of the producers. They always view these stories through a lens of health skepticism, providing logic and reasoning, but also respect the stories with a degree of tolerance and face value curiosity. I find this mixture to be very enjoy. Thank you Bedtime Stories!
The bed thing is so interesting because I, a South African born and bred, didn't actually know WHY some elders did that to their beds. Ya learn something new every day!
I remember having to look for bricks when my aunt moved unto her house so we could raise her beds
Hi, did the elders not mention the Tokoloshe to you at any point, I’m sure it would have definitely creeped me out as a kid, probably wise that they didn’t I guess
Bedtime Stories beyond creepy and Sir Spooks upload at the same time ! This is an absolutely banger time to be happy!
Sir Spooks??? I'm looking into it!
Sure would be nice if Sir Spooks wasn't just a lazy content farmer
I missed you! I've actually never heard of the Tokoloshe before! I'm so glad you've brought this to my attention!
In 1971 there was a world wide hit Tokoloshe Man by John Kongos... the more you know
We need more bedtime stories! Best show ever
I love that you feature cryptids and legends from all over the world! Let my point you to a very creepy creature from Swedish folklore: Myling. The Myling is the spirit of an unwanted child who was murdered by their mother, and buried in unhallowed ground. They have been known to attack and murder people, but they also have a very sad reason for existing. All they want is a name, and to be buried in a proper grave. Anyone who's unable to grand them these gifts will be killed.
Considering the huge amount of abortions in Sweden there must be many of them
i knew the ethiopian tokoloshes personally. they are one of the kindest most misunderstood little imps. do not be alarmed if you ever encounter them at night.
It's so interesting that a creature in folklore would have such a different disposition in two different countries.
Fascinating.
An interesting twist on the idea of a boogeyman. It’s always intriguing hearing about similar entities through the lens of another culture.
as far as i know it´s a entity that get´s bound to a statue with rusty nails and a mirror made out of quartz. Similar to Hebrew golems or Tibetans tulpa´s from my understanding just the energy is a little different
@@PhilippBrandAkatosh it looks like a hippo

Another triumph Bedtime Stories and the after credits scene was quality 👽
South African here. Understandably, a lot of major points were left out of this video due to their graphic nature. I think the tokkelossie is seen of as more than just a demon. Often “he” is portrayed as a short, hairy goblin-type creature and even the mention of his name can mean disaster to those who believe (many are very superstitious). We were told as kids growing up that we needed to keep our feet covered, not hanging off the bed at night because if not the tokkelossie would come and bite our toes off. He also has a reputation of being particularly… adventurous with women. Lots of connections to witchcraft as the video mentioned.
On a side note, very sad to say but whenever there’s mention of witches abducting people you can assume they met an untimely end. Paganism isn’t uncommon in SA and those practicing have been known to capitalize on their victims in unspeakable ways. It’s especially a problem for albinos, unfortunately.
I'm raising my bed up on stilts straightaway!
Pretty scary is that knowing most is likely a cover for Domestic violence's or likely a poverty story a family will tell for lose a family member due to sleeping near a fire to keep warm. The in flux of colonies trying to abuse the locals as well is scary. But there is a small bit where you have the unknown. A cryptic attacking a guys wife. Its scary. As always great addition.
So an undead body risen from the grave, shrunken and possessed by a demon can not go higher than 3ft by any means? Talk about not being able to GET IT UP!!!

Your thought was mine exactly. Things are created to keep people confused and chasing jothing while pure evil intended people amongst us carry out thwir sick fantasies...
In Sepedi(from northern South Africa) we spell it “tokološi” and instead of reanimating a corpse, a living person is taken, their tongue cut out and made to do the bidding of their captors. Every corner of Southern Africa has a variation of it. Some are even forced to work and bring money to the family that took them
The special bonus clip at the end was gold. :)
This story would make for a good horror movie set in Africa with an all-African cast.👍
Orrr....hear me out....we could cast at least a few actors that someone somewhere may actually pay to watch in a movie? May not be fair, but is unfortunately fact.

It reminds me of the Karen Black segment in the film "Trilogy of Terror" where a small demon attacks her in her apartment.

Finally. Was wondering when this episode would be uploaded. But perhaps there’s another universe where it was already uploaded last week. And another where it still hasn’t been uploaded. And another where the next episode or two after this are already uploaded. Who knows how the bedtime stories channel operates in other universes?
People often call me crazy for asking questions just like this.
Saw this earlier in the week, am having another watch tonight, love a scary story on Sunday evening and bts do it the best. Never heard this story before which makes it even better. A creepy little tale it is too.
Great to see you guys back.
Had a really bad weekend, this is going to be perfect to unwind to
Woo! Been checking every Sunday night. Keep them coming, guys!
Okay, I still haven’t watched the video but I’m PSYCHED to have a new episode to listen to as soon as I get home from work!!!

I've already thought of making a tokoloshe be the antagonist of a fairy tale (or the African equivalent) set in medieval South Africa that I want to create sometime, and because of you, I now know more about and hold SO MUCH more fear for these horrifying creatures!
Another interesting story. One that makes one wonder if they would carry out an evil act out of malicious vengeance.
The Tokoloshe is probably one of many demonic manifestations that exist somewhere in our psyches. And yet, we have the power to let cooler heads prevail.

A safari guide revealed to viewers on Safari Live she had seen a tokalosh as a teenager. She was at school and was walking along a corridoor that was all windows on one side and saw a small hairy thing on two legs walking near the trees keeping pace with her. She shrugged it off as imagination until next day the school cook screamed for everyone to get inside because there was a tokalosh outside.
