    Very cool! I have the Athearn version I picked up a couple of years ago, but this Kato version is tempting as well. I'm glad that it can handle 11" radius curves so well. That is good news for everyone with a small layout!

    Great video and info! I’m a big fan of the Big Boy locomotives and I didn’t know a lot of the stuff you explained about the real one. I’ve seen a few on display and the club I belong has one in HO which I love. Unfortunately my HO layout is going to be way too small to handle one of these but this one you showed is beautiful! Thanks for the great video.

      The Union Pacific was cheap. They would have the cab forward locomotives delivered in New Mexico and Texas to avoid paying sales tax in California. The cab forward were developed to prevent engineers from being suffocated in the king tunnels in California. They are a marvel of Engineering.

    Really like your presentation and content. Your reviews on the locomotives are excellent. It would be great to see a side by side comparison of tractive effort using a quality dynamometer. Other than that and perhaps checking the weight of the locomotive only... your videos would be a 9 or 10 out of 10!

    I hope the Kato Locomotives have something different or at least they will last longer or easier to install new traction tires.

    when you do a video on how to make it DCC please show step by step because I want to know how to put ESU in it I'm getting annoyed because I've been trying to research for about 2 months now and have not found anybody showing how they set it up all they do is talk on how they done it but not showing exactly how they hooked up the decoder for me to understand something it's easy for me to watch and showing the audience step by step with the whole engine apart and how to wire up the decoders that's easier for me to understand how to do this stuff.

    I notice that sometimes the bars on the drive wheels were aligned and sometimes they were out of sync. I am curious if on the prototype if they stay in sync or not.

    • @TheTrainFreak
      @TheTrainFreak Před 11 měsíci +1

      They would get out of sync due to curves and wheel slippage.

    • @milkymoocowmoo
      @milkymoocowmoo Před 11 měsíci +1

      They can go out of sync on this model because of the two completely separate drivetrains. The prototype is similar in that there is no mechanical link between driver sets, only a pressurized system. Most articulated steamer models, certainly all the Mallet types I've experience with (Challenger, Big Boy, Yellowstone, etc), operate with the driver sets mechanically linked in a single system, and thus the driver sets cannot rotate independently without there being some kind of mechanical fault.

    I’m just trying to figure out why I don’t care for this as much. I don’t have any pull towards Union Pacific, they were very narrow in when and how they were used, and it’s just “the popular thing,” but that could be partly due to when it was restored and run. Recently? I prefer smaller ones, I suppose, that would have done work around the country, running all kinds of freight, or people.

    • @milkymoocowmoo
      @milkymoocowmoo Před 11 měsíci

      The reason for the fascination is hiding in plain sight - they're literally big boys! Huge, hulking machines, an engineering marvel. I'm sure the restoration efforts helped but they were popular long before that, always have been.
      I don't own a Big Boy myself, but do have a pair of Yellowstones and previously a Challenger, despite being an early Burlington Northern modeler where these brutes make absolutely no sense. They're just awesome to see. I occasionally doublehead my EM-1s at exhibitions and it never fails to draw people in!

    I do not understand Kato‘s engineering. This is a very old fashion concept for model locos with 2 motors and individual pickups. Especially in the Big Boy, they have plenty of space for a bigger motor with flywheel and the construction is known from big diesel engines.
    Anyway most of the home layouts are too small for BigBoys and Challengers. 😅

    • @milkymoocowmoo
      @milkymoocowmoo Před 11 měsíci

      I'm curious to know if the decoder Kato's using is anything special, or just a bog standard one designed for a single motor with no additional code. We all know that no two motors are exactly the same, even in identical models from the same run, and Kato is no exception. Unless the decoder is some special unit with dual independently-managed motor outputs, the two driver sets will be impossible to speed match.
      Kato's reasoning seems to be that it permits an 11" minimum radius, but the likes of Athearn's Challenger & Big Boy and Bachmann's EM-1 already do this despite the more conventional drivetrain, because they all cheat (just like this model) and allow the rear driver set to pivot.
      I'm inclined to say that the individual driver mechanisms are (or will be) used in another model, and it simply comes down to the production efficiency of a "shared platform" as a car manufacturer would call it.

    That's kato big boy is a joke......and there video pulling 15 pounds of weight is staged....why ?.. I have one and did a review on all three big boys ..kato at 5.4 oz bli big boy at 8.5 oz and athearn big boy at 7.7 oz......one guy I know went to the n scale nats said it couldn't pull 30 cars let alone 20 with a lot of wheel slippage......draw bar comes apart between the engine and tender....alot of guys that was there at the nats was complaining to kato about these and other issues .....kato was taking notes......said there doing a second run and said it will be a fox ......I didn't bother to waste my money putting DCC with sound in mine..keeped it DC and added rear maker lights and reverse light......if there doing a second run hope they do a complete die cast boiler to make it heavier to get more traction so it would pull better......the only thing this has is a great smooth runner.......ps told kato to take there video down of it pulling 15 pounds of weight....with pulling 15 pounds it should pull 200 cars with ease ....but it doesnt and it's false advertising......

    • @jmurrell9881
      @jmurrell9881 Před 8 měsíci

      I agree. It should have more weight. But, it pulls 30 cars on my layout without a problem. And it is very smooth and quiet So I'm happy. When I was at the Kato booth, everyone at that time was telling them to make a Santa Fe Northern.
