    I have a GL-30 Kawai. I couldn’t afford a GX1 (I’m retired and do not finance purchases anymore.) I’m not a professional but only an intermediate. I’ve had very advanced pianists play my GL30. If money was not an object, Id certainly get the GX1 but, frankly, I cant imagine it sounding any better in my home. The GL30 is magnificent. I prefer classics but the Kawai sounds great on rags too.
    Just my humble comments. I’m a Kawai guy now, hands down!

    The Kawai seemed to be warmer sounding and more secondary harmonics. I would think the type of music one plays would determine which way a person gravitates towards.

    Both the piano has different sounds character as you said Kawai is slightly bigger in the size and I can see the difference in sound nice beautiful warm and singing tone and so beautiful longer sustain and I can clearly hear the harmonics in GX1. In this particular piano comparison Kawai GX1 sound much better to my ear. But I have a request to you try to play different genres music on both the piano. Like complicated classical piece/Jazz and Pop music. It will be easy to make decision. Good playing and review. Thanks you!

    Long time classical pianist here... I’ve owned 2 Yamahas 1 C2x and 1 GC2. And I own a Shigeru Kawai SK3 (much higher price point :)). I have played all of these....Yamahas tend to be to bright for me. If you are a jazz or blues person Yamaha is for you. If you are classical the Kawai or used Steinway is the way to go. I am sad to say but it’s true that Yamahas pre “x” line age VERY poorly. Compared to the other 2 I mentioned. This comment may be harsh, but it is the truth. Walk into any Yamaha store and play a 20+ year old Yamaha and then do the same for a Kawai or Steinway al else being as equal as possible. You will start to see as trend. It is TBD how the “x” line will do with time after the bosendorfer merger.

    Both beautiful pianos, difficult for me to appreciate the difference only with a video, besides they have a slightly different size that can count most at this high level of comparison and, eventually, the difference is not so great to overcome the differences due to preparation and to individual pianos (even two Kawai can be different from each other), besides the difference that can count depending on the kind of music you prefer. However, I can say two things that I prefer:
    1) The Millennium III action is more consistent and reliable as the years go by.
    2) I prefer the shape of Yamaha for its beautiful borders on the two sides of the keyboard, perfect curves for Yamaha vs broken curves in the case of Kawai near the strech bar.

    Hi Patrick, thank you for the very informative review and beautiful playing. It's interesting that two companies with a common history have used similar names for comparable instruments so long after they have separated. I found the sound of the Kawai (especially in the middle and lower registers) to be more pleasing, while the Yamaha seemed to be a bit louder. Can you also please tell me the names of the beautiful music you played in your demonstration. Thank you and best wishes.

    There's an odd vibration on some of the notes on the Kawai. One sounds like a Kawai GX the other like a Yama CX. The CX has great articulation and an almost Bosendorfer like quality to the upper notes. The GX has a softer hammer tone and a more saturated tone. For me, it's not about finding a "winner," they're both excellent pianos. It's playing the pianos in a way that brings out their characteristics. I didn't think that was done in this demo.

    • @pascalpai3726
      @pascalpai3726 Před 3 lety

      In a medium-sized room space, I think both are sufficiently excellent for most of the pieces. But Bosendorfer is a different tier on its saturation of higher and lower bands. Anyway, Yamaha and Kawai are kind of sufficient for me on either budget or space perspectives.

      I am in this exact situation right now!! But a GX1 just arrived from Japan yesterday and now I’m in between getting the brand new GL40 or the brand new GX1! The GC2 was disqualified as I didn’t connect with it much. How much were you able to negotiate your GL40? The GL40 msrp is currently 41,195 but I was able to negotiate down to 24,000 flat. I may try to get down to 23k

    • @MarianoPerez
      @MarianoPerez Před 6 měsíci +1

      @gustavogo2915 my rule of thumb is to get as big piano as you can afford and that won't be too loud in your living space. Yes, the GX has some extra embellishments over the GL line, but both of these pianos are world class instruments that are even better than what most famous masters played on. For the purpose of a private piano, either piano will last you close to a lifetime. Hence, go with what sounds good to you. Have someone go with you to the piano store, play each piano blindfolded and see which one sounds and feels better to you. Anything above the GL line is just embellishments, which are nice, but they don't always translate to a better piano for your own personal needs.

      I forgot to reply. I ended up buying the brand new Kawai GL40! It has a very warm tone and amazing bass. But now I’m thinking it’s overpowering my small apartment. So I’m a debating if I should trade for a GX1 or possibly a K800 or Yamaha YUS5. I just tested out a Bechstein A6 and might go that route although it’s more expensive than even a GX2 and it’s an upright …

    • @MarianoPerez
      @MarianoPerez Před 3 dny +1

      @user-jp4ld1ss9i have you tried putting a rug under the piano or cloth drapes on the windows? That can absorb some of the sound. I'd take a baby grand over the k800 unless you really like the upright piano. I'd look into the Gl10, and GL20. The GL30 might be just as loud as the GL40. Use a db sound app from your phone to see how loud these pianos are.

    • @user-jp4ld1ss9i
      @user-jp4ld1ss9i Před 3 dny

      @MarianoPerez I had a GL10 I also got new two years ago. The GL10 was what I traded in for the GL40. I had originally ordered a GL30 but the one that had arrived didn’t impress me as it was on the bright side and has some buzzing keys. Then I saw they had also received a brand new GL40 and brand new GX1. I took the GL40 since it had the deeper bass and was a bit cheaper by almost 1k. Now I’m going to go back and see if I can get full trade in for the GX1 same GX1 since they still haven’t sold it or possibly the GL30 Aures 2 they literally got in last week.
      But I was very impressed with the Bechstein A6 upright and kind of leaning that direction unless I can manage to get the full trade in with my GL40 and get another heck of a deal with the GX1 or GL30Aures 2 that has the silent system. I’m finding I like the singing treble of the GX1 and the Bechstein A6 more.
      How are you enjoying your GL40?
