      Good subject to choose.Good informative video.
      You are testing IBM XT PC with a demo version of Commander Keen.
      Do you need to buy the original version of Commander Keen because of "copyright" .
      I was thinking that it is free of charge.
      Keep up the good work.

      The Ati X1800 had 16 Pixel Pipelines.
      Then they switched to the Unified shader model
      and the 2600 XT had 120 cores.
      How to compare them? to understand the power difference

    This XT was a great find! And I think you know plenty, these were simple times, machines were simple and I think you did great covering it. Even things like 386s give me a hard time, this thing would take me on a head trip for sure! Thanks for another video, I'm glad you got that one out for us!

    I picked up an xt class system a couple of months ago. it really teaches you about some of the bare metal required as you need to ensure that the io address, IRQ, DMA, and memory address allocated properly. unfortunately I think the xtide requires a setting change for a different io address along with a jumper.

    was just watching your older tech demo videos and thought you would be just the person to ask. Im looking to find an old tech demo could have been ATI or Nvidia all i can recall was soldiers in a dark rocky place fighting aliens/dinosaurs, maybe early 2000s late 90s it was really jank looking and dark. hoping this helps as ive searched for years and never been able to find it. Keep up the good work!

    Well you might want to try get running Free DOS on this computer, so you have Fat32 support and you can even use some 16 bit isa ethernet cards (that can work just fine in 8 bits) to access games from a lan server. The channel Tech tangents made a great video about doing this stuff and it's a pretty great way of keeping an xt system usable. BTW to do this stuff you definitely need a ram upgrade to have the complete 640k.

    It's been a while since you released one of your great videos about old nvidia and amd cards. Do you intend to create one about the dispute between the Geforce 8000 Series vs Radeon HD 2000 Series? It's an interesting point about the swing in favor of Nvidia, and the mistakes made by AMD.
    Thanks.😁

    Those old hard drives get "stuck." Take it out and hold it in your hand, then twist it really fast to break it loose and it'll work until it gets stuck again. I had one of these with an ega card in it.

    • @PixelPipes
      @PixelPipes  Před rokem +2

      I could try it! I figured all the moving around of the system I had been doing would be enough, but heck I got nothing to lose. It really doesn't sound broken though when it powers on, so maaaaybe there's hope.

    • @Miasmark
      @Miasmark Před rokem

      @@PixelPipes also see if there is a way you can lube it. Adrian's digital basement's showed this a few times as sometimes just soaking a drop or 2 of oil in the motor can get it moving again.

    • @pf100andahalf
      @pf100andahalf Před rokem

      @Mr Guru I've never seen one of these drives not get stuck eventually. It doesn't break the drive to twist it. I've got lots of these drives working like that. It's not going to hurt to try because you aren't trying to recover any data off of it, plus even if you get it working it's going to get stuck again. It's really a lost cause in the long run and it's better to just get an adapter and replace the drive entirely with anything besides an mfm or rll drive. You can believe me or find out the hard way. Good luck either way.

    • @pf100andahalf
      @pf100andahalf Před rokem

      @Mr Guru I know who you are and I didn't mean to sound arrogant so forgive me if I came across that way because I have a lot of respect for you and your experience. It's just that I worked on a lot of AT's and XT's at a high end shop in the late 80's and early 90's when these drives were old enough to cause problems. If you aren't trying to recover data it's absolutely not worth the money to have a professional unstick the drive because it will just stick again. Of course if you want the XT to be completely original then yes, have a professional replace the bearings and heads and rebuild the drive, but otherwise, unless you know something I don't, it's not worth putting more money in the drive than it would cost to convert to a more modern storage device. If you do have a better idea I'd would sincerely like to hear it. I promise I'm not trying to be confrontational or a know-it-all here, but I don't understand why you would want to put a lot of money into this drive unless you're trying to keep it all original in which case then yes, I agree - have a professional refurbish the drive.

    I use 5.25" HDD cases switchable between 3 different machines, cause PCI/ISA slots are packed, Don't play around DOS WinChip 200 is mine slowest machine. To get data on and off WebDAV on Synology NAS is convinient but it has to run at least Windows 98 - most cloud platforms supports acting as WebDAV server - Nextcloud for example. Windows IIS 7 if enabled can support WebDAV hosting - PhilsComputerLab uses this NAS method, for DOS well.. i have an idea?! What if ESP32 WiFi could emulate IDE port (okey we would need more IO)
    And this thing could connect to FTP server and emulate HDD trough IDE port. FTP is simple protocol, WebDAV more complicated and you have to cache in RAM of this small microcontroller all file names. But would solve all problems of swaping. To Emulate configuration enough would be virtual file on that HDD that is always vitually on it, you edit, it reads changes, connect to your network defined in that file, shares location defined, and virtually adding to HDD files found on server to be accessed then transeered by simply copy to local HDD hm.. There would not be need to put anything SD cards, CF cards, just having giant server somewhere?! Or even in cloud or define any FTP hosting anywhere anytime.. no tools needed, no SD cards swaps, if hosted in the internet data could be shared and accessible to anyone anytime anywhere.

    • @KabelkowyJoe
      @KabelkowyJoe Před rokem

      PLUS -> there is IDE librarly even for freaking AVR8 bit, back in days ~2000 people made mp3 player of IDE hdd, mp3 decoder and AVR micro, but SD card is even simpler, and would make it more universal, nothing else than 4 bit SDI interface enough for ESP32, it would only need PCB of certain thicnkess to be put inside slot and trough cable connect to ESP that will emulate not IDE protocol but FAT file system?! If anyone wanted to put back SD card he could... Sorry for spaming here.. swaping is fine, glad you bough diferent people different forms of basically same idea, this one you shown is neat, love it, love neat forms, everyone does
