- Big Enos (Pat McCormick) wants to drink Coors at a truck show, but in 1977 it was illegal to sell Coors east of the Mississippi River without a permit. Truck driver Bo "Bandit" Darville (Burt Reynolds) agrees to pick up the beer in Texas and drive it to Georgia within 28 hours. When Bo picks up hitchhiker Carrie (Sally Field), he attracts the attention of Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason). Angry that Carrie will not marry his son, Justice embarks on a high-speed chase after Bandit.

Jerry is a legendary musician and songwriter (and actor) and one of the guitar greats. You don't even have to be a country fan to appreciate Jerry Reed.
Jerry Reed could entertain rocks and make them come back for more. He did a lot of sub groups with his music but the one I heard a lot growing up was the songs he had about trucking. My father enjoyed them so we heard them often. One of my favorites is “Caffeine, Nicotine, Benzedrine and Wish Me Luck.”
Listen, and you notice the primary song is "Westbound and down" when they are headed to Texas, and Eastbound and down once they flip-flop and head back to Georgia.
Jackie Gleason aka "The Great One" absolutely stole the show with his portrayal of Sherrif Buford T. Justice, LOL!
The only movie in the summer of '77 to challenge STAR WARS at the box-office.

We had 1975 Lincoln Continental & a 1974 Chevy Suburban and we had a CB ìn both of them.

I was a 15 yr old when that movie was filmed & I was on the square in Covington Georgia when Burt landed his plane to get beer, I was one of the folks getting out of the way as it takes off {CZcams Cannonball Plane} & I was on the opposite side of the square in 1978 when the General Lee comes sliding onto the square in the first episode, me & my stepdad were in front of the red brick store {CZcams Dukes Of Hazzard : Chase From 1st Episode}! Before then we were living in Jonesboro 2 miles from Snowmans house so we got to see that part filmed

The End and The Longest Yard (Original) are both great My dad was a NY State Trooper who loved Jackie Gleason. This was his all-time favorite movie.
CB radios were a craze in the mid-to-late 70s and spread far beyond truckers. I spent many an evening as a pre-teen yakkin' away with strangers on the CB. The truckers used the 10-codes and also developed their own slang, which was co-opted by society in general for several years. Several "trucker" genre movies out there, most notably the one named after the biggest "CB/Trucker song" of all time, "Convoy" by C.W. McCall. The movie starred Kris Kristofferson (music legend).
Snowman wrote/played most of the music for this movie. HIs name's Jerry Reed, and he had a lot of country and crossover hits in the 70s, most of them had a humorous theme.

Even as late as the early '90s, I had a 'base station' at the house. Remember sitting at home in MS during a freak snow event, watching the Weather Channel, and sharing 'current conditions' for cities around the Southeast with professional drivers out there on the highway trying to get their cargo through to their destinations on time. "If you bought it..a truck brought it.", right?

Same here. My parents had CBs in the vehicles and a base station at home. Before I was chatting on BBSes and then the Internet, I was chatting on the CB radio. They were also better than radar detectors for avoiding speed traps, and were great for getting around traffic. The truckers were awesome.
Also, the "Boss Hog" is played by the legendary Jackie Gleason who had one of the first sitcoms on TV, " The Honeymooners."

When this came out in 1977 me and my younger brother watch it all day of course after paying the tickets the first time. Yes, most had CB radios in their car as well as in the trucks. What a fun time being a Gen X ✊🏾

This movie came out in 1977. $80,000 back in 1977, with inflation would have had the buying power of $413,924.75 now in 2024 money.
White Lightening is awesome, but also Burt was a big time college football player for Florida State, so a great movie would be The Longest Yard, and of course the ultimate crime story Sharky's Machine........ but I believe he was nominated for an Oscar and won the Golden Globe for Boogie Nights. All these movies AMAZING!

@@FlixTalk Just so ya know...there was a remake of The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Burt makes an appearance in that. So, you should start with the OG Longest Yard from 1974...my opinion it's definitely the better one. OH and fun fact...Burt and Sally met for the first time during this movie and dated for 5 years. One more recommendation for a great Burt Reynolds movie is "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" with Dolly Parton.

You definitely want to see the Cannonballs. Gator and White Lightning are good action movies from the early 70s. The Longest Yard is also good. Don't waste your time on the Adam Sandler remake. Last but most certainly not least is Hooper. Another Hal Needham movie. Hal directed Smoky and Hooper. Hal was Burts stunt coordinator and best friend. Hooper is loaded with the best stuntmen in Hollywood at the time and all of Burts friends. Think of it as 90 minutes of "hey y'all. Watch this" oh and thanks for wading into my childhood. Welcome to the movie that made hot rodding fun again. This movie was beat at the box office by Star Wars in 1977 and introduced people to good country music. This movie is for many of us our childhood.

I initially did not want to see this movie because I thought it was about Smoky the Bear and fire safety. So when I was finally talked him into going to the theater to see it, it Blew my six-year-old mind.
My dad got a Trans Am two years after this movie we had it for a while the car was supposed to be passed down to the rest of us but it got wrecked
I just found your reaction to my very favorite movie - see my profile picture, lol. You need some missing context for Snowman running over the motorcycles. That's actually the punchline to a very old trucker's joke, that I never even heard until decades after I'd seen the movie:
A truck driver is sitting at the lunch counter at a truck stop, quietly eating his breakfast. A bunch of loudmouth bikers walk in and start harassing him - knocking his hat off his head, calling him all sorts of dirty names, screwing with his food, pouring his coffee out in the floor. He didn't say a word, just paid his bill and walked out the door.
The bikers laugh heartily and slap each other's backs. One of them says to the waitress, "Well, he wasn't much of a man, was he?" The waitress, glancing out the front window, replies, "He's not much of a driver, either - he just ran over all your bikes." 😆
So when Snowman grinned that big grin right before he ran over the bikes, he would have been thinking to himself, "I can't believe it, it's just like the old joke."
And yeah, Bandit went viral over a CB radio decades before there was the internet.
Reynolds was a great stuntman, learning from the likes of the great Dar Robinson. He then transitioned into acting, and became a huge presence and very successful in that role. His movies are legendary, and he did the original version of The Longest Yard which was remade by Adam Sandler.
CB radio was huge throughout the 70's through to the 90's. I live in Australia and driving from the Gold Coast to Harvey Bay (400km) with an ex I started chatting to the truckies heading north, I jumped in behind one and sat about 3 feet off his back-door and another truck came up behind me so basically I was caught in the slip stream of the truck in front and being push by the one from behind I sat there for about 100 kms use next to no fuel, when they overtook cars i just went with them, i couldn't see the road in front of me, but they were chatting to trucks ahead of them for clear road to overtake, it didn't matter if it was a corner a hill we just went with them, awesome times back then. I've always loved this movie, cheers

C.B radio's were big back then ( think of it as the internet of the 1970s )
.....everyone and their mothers had one both in the car and also big base models.
It was a blast talking with people up and down the East Coast and even out in the ocean.
I remember way back one summer day... there was a guy out fishing alone, he had hooked a bluefin tuna that was huge !
He was fighting with this fish for 14 or more hours and talking with us when he could. We even got in touch with other fishermen who helped him reel it in and tie it to boat ( almost like the book/movie "Oldman and the Sea)
Except this guy had a much bigger boat. ( This was many decades ago )
Turned out this Atlantic Bluefin tuna was about 10' feet long & 500+ pounds and we watched him come into the harbor with that wicked catch and everyone on the dock was checking it out !
Yes so C.B radio's were a riot as long as you followed the rules because if you strayed, other CB'ers would shut you down quickly. By the end of the 70s, they faded as fast as they showed up but still stayed popular with the truckers.
While this is considered one of Burt Reynolds’ best movies, it is also one of Jackie Gleason’s best.
While forever identified with playing Ralph Kramden on The Honeymooners, or playing Minnesota Fats in The Hustler (1961), it’s his role as Buford T. Justice that most film fans know him from.
This movie was made at the height of the CB craze in America, when everyone it seemed had a radio and spoke to people across the country. I personally found it funny that you could have someone like a company president who handled million-dollar deals on a regular basis, but stick a CB microphone in his hand and all of a sudden he spoke like Jed Clampett. ("Oh, mercy sakes, good buddy ...")
What was most amusing about this movie was seeing all of the cars peeling out of the theater parking lots after the film by all of the drivers pretending to be Burt Reynolds as the Bandit. It was one of the most popular film of that era.

This was the first movie that I can remember seeing that I just truly LOVED, I was 8 years old and my rural hometown had just gotten one of those fancy new fangled indoor movie theaters lol. I can remember still looking up, watching that Trans Am rolling out of the back of the truck up on that huge screen with the sound on the engine coming at me from all sides!
Cannonball Run 1 and 2 have more hilarity, stars and stunts with out takes at the end that just keep you wanting more.
P.S. You cut this thing to ribbons, but your joy just about made up for it. This one's a keeper.

If you're looking for another badass car movie The Vanishing Point is one of the best.
This is true art, today's Hollywood has all the technology but lacks the skill to make such a feel good action comedy. They are more worried about being PC or Woke to the point as Mel Brooks put it himself in his movie To Be or Not to Be "There is no comedy" If you can't laugh at yourself or anyone else the art is dead.
I was only 10 years old when this came out. Back then everyone had a CB. It was the In Thing. Even we have CBs. Even in the house. My handle was "Inspector Clouseau." My father was ' Papa Q" And mom was "Lady Green Thumb"
The Hal Needham and Reynolds partnership spawned some great movies, Hal was a ex stuntman so he knew how To plan out every single action and chase. Cannonball Run 1 and 2 are must watches just for the cast of guest stars.
That part when they drove through the kids football game. Was real, it was an accident they were supposed to go around it. Amazing driving no one got hurt.
In the old USFL days, there were the Tampa Bay Bandits of which Burt Reynolds was a minority owner. He would fly in for games with a bunch of his friends. There's a great pin-up poster of Loni Anderson (his girlfriend at the time) and you never truly knew what it is to almost die from laughing unless you've seen Dom Deluise joining the cheerleaders in dance routines!
FYI: Burt Renalds was a stuntman in Hollywood. Sally Field's first big role was in the TV Series called the FLYING NUN. Jerry Reed is a Country music Hall of famer. Jackie Gleeson has his star on the HOLLYWOOD walk of fame.
Actually, Sally's first big role was the TV version of "Gidget", then "The Flying Nun".

For another Needham/Reynolds collaboration, "Hooper" is a must see. Also another on screen pairing of Burt and Sally field. Cars, stunts, and Reynolds doing his thing.

Oh, and in case you didn't notice. In the 70's and 80's, we use to make fun of racist. Which, and unfortunately, you cannot do anymore, as racism has become an intricate part of the government's control system. Which was first instituted by Bill Clinton who, to this day, still claims to be America's First Black President. But, that's another story.

Texarkana is the name of a city on the Texas-Arkansas state line. One side of it is in Texas, the other side in Arkansas. It's bisected by State Line Avenue. Before telephone switching systems got computerized, a call from the Texas side to the Arkansas side, or vice-versa, was long-distance, even if you were just calling across State Line Avenue. (You could save money by walking across the street and talking to your party in his shop.)

Fun movie, great flow and a wonderful cast all around but can you imagine anyone else playing BUFORD T JUSTICE? Gleason just owned that role.
Loved watching you enjoy this movie! It's one of my all-time favorites. A huge portion of it was filmed in and around my hometown of Jonesboro, GA. I've seen it more times than I can count and every time is like taking a trip back in time and seeing my hometown just as it was when I was a kid. I was nine years old the summer it was filmed in 1976 and I remember it well. It was a big deal having Burt Reynolds in town and I was lucky enough to get to watch some of the filming...specifically, them rolling into town to pick up the Coors. Some other Burt Reynolds movies you might enjoy are: White Lightning (1973), The Longest Yard (1974), Gator (also with Jerry Reed - 1976), Semi-Tough (1977), Hooper (1978), The Cannonball Run (1981), and Sharky's Machine (1981) just to name a few. There's also a great documentary about the making of Smokey and the Bandit and the relationship between Burt and director/stuntman Hal Needham...The Bandit (2016).
Everyone best me to the punch about Jerry Reed. The Bird is another great album by him. He’s known for his finger picking style of guitar playing.

Just found your channel. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I first saw it when it came out in the '70s at a drive-in theater. My mother had a crush on Burt Reynolds. I remember one of my first jobs had a centerfold picture of Burt Reynolds in the bathroom. No joke. I think they're just too sequels and they are pretty good. Nothing is as good as the first one. The one with the elephant is really funny as well. I think that's number three. Great reaction. I'm going to subscribe today. I loved your reaction to the song. We had a CB in our car because we traveled a lot. My dad was in the military so we moved a lot and we traveled to my grandparents every summer. Our handle was the silver bullet. Burt was the top box office drawl for 5 years in a row back in the day. The ladies loved him and the guys wanted to be him. I knew you would love this movie just like I knew you would love Bronson in Death Wish.
Another great Burt Reynolds movie is called "The End." It's also has Sally Field in it along with Dom DeLuise, who is absolutely hilarious. Funny, funny movie. Hope you check it out.
There are 2 theatrical sequels for made for TV reboots and also there is a show that was called American Truckers where they actually did do the same run from Atlanta to Texarkana, Texas and back to Atlanta in 28 hours actually they did it quicker with stops along the way

All of the songs in this movie is sung by Jerry Reed a country Western singer in the 60's and 70's and played Cletus so also "THE SNOWMAN".
After the movie Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields ended up dating for awhile.
So much of Jerry Reed's music will leave you with a big grin on your face and is worth checking out.
"Amos Moses", "Lord Mister Ford", "Tupelo Mississippi Flash", She got the goldmine I got the shaft" etc. All tell wacky stories with such charisma and his great voice and accent.
Ok you gotta try one of Burt’s best. The Longest Yard the original from 1974. This is the real deal much better imo the Longest Yard from the 2000s with Adam Sandler. You’ll go as nuts with The Longest Yard (1974) as this movie.

FYI, Smokey And The Bandit was the #2 box office movie of 1977, second only to Star Wars. So it was very popular. Also caused a spike in both Trans-Am and Coors sales. 🤣
