I'm faurly MetallicA have always been metal, even if not heavy metal. Just because some songs are more mellow than others, doesn't mean it isn't mellow, unless it is in specificallyanoyher genre (say pop), regardless, Metallica have their own style they play, and metal isn't entirely about the heavines, it's about the quantity and quality of soul and anger and sadness and rage that regular rock'n'roll just doesn't usually capture. I mean, the fact of this band being metal is in their name or anything.

A belated answer. This song hits too close to home, because you see, they ARE King Nothing.
I love this song so much, because when i was a kid, i was on my way to becoming king nothing.
Im autistic, and i didnt understand social cues at the time, so when i was really really young, like, 5-6 years old, i would unintentionally upset people without meaning to, because i would say or do the wrong thing at the wrong time. People made me out to be "the bad guy" and at that young of an age... i believed them. I started hating myself. Thought that if me just being myself made people upset, that must mean that "myself" was a bad person.
And... as the years went on, as i was absolutely convinced i was a horrible person, the pain of that thought hurt so much that, in order to cope, i leaned into it. I decided that if i was the bad guy, then i would act like one. I started lashing out, being purposefully annoying and infuriating to people, getting them to hate me. I thought their rage was hilarious. I became addicted to that sense of control and power that bullying people gave me, i wanted more of it.
But... it never really made me happy. It wasnt really what i wanted. Im actually a kind and empathetic person that wants to make people happy, so... it was a false pleasure. As i was pushing people away, burning bridges, doing what i thought i wanted, reveling in the feelings of power, i was really just leaving myself empty inside.
If i had kept chasing those feelings, if i had kept going, it would have all fallen apart eventually. My castle would have crumbled, my crown would have shattered, i would have been left complerely alone, and unhappy.
Luckily, by around the end of junior high, i managed to face the truth, that i wasnt happy with this. I got my shit together and started acting like the kind and caring person i really was. And finally, after all these years, ive found myself and who i want to be. And so i love listening to this song, as it reminds me that im *not* king nothing. That i managed to break away from that dark path. That all of my effort and turmoil meant something. That it wasnt all for nothing.
Im calling out my past self, and basically saying "im not you anymore. Ive completely broken away from you. Im never going to be you again". And its so *vindicating* and *liberating* to recognize that. To recognize that my hard work and effort was worth it. That ive succeeded in becoming my best possible self. Thats why i love this song so much, and why it will always have a special place in my heart
