    Thanks for the review! There is now also a green and somewhat more rainproof version and I reckon I buy that. I was first considering hooped bivys, but as many of them weigh and cost pretty much the same, but lack e.g. double skin design and breathability I start to see the benefits of these type of tents. This wouldn’t take much more room in a bike packing bag either, as I would pack poles separately in any case.

    I have a ZPacks Hexamid which looks slightly bigger than this one, and my main concern with these super small tents is in really heavy weather it is almost impossible to get into without dragging all the water on you inside as well. The awning on this is decent but in reality I don't think it would offer full protection. I got caught in a downpour with my Hexamid where I suddenly had ground water to deal with and I stood there for a few minutes completely at a loss on how to get my down gear out without soaking everything as there was no room to be out of the rain and my body/arms was dripping wet. For fair weather these are great but I ultimately decided on a larger shelter to give me more options for different conditions.

    Think of them more like luxury bivvies lol. I dig them man. Good review man.

    I'm liking this tent more and more, I'm planing a long solo sea kayak trip in the chilean southern passage to San Rafael glassier for a couple of weeks, will see what happens

    This offering from Sierra Designs is arguably a slight redesign of the old Mountain Hardwear Sprite minus the side head storage (which I thought was cool). I used that for a few seasons and found two things I didn’t like which ultimately made me give it up: 1) it used a lot of pegs (I think around 10) to get a taught pitch, which I personally didn’t like fiddling around with at the end of a long day, and 2) switching to a thicker sleeping pad (like I did in the last year I owned it) raised me up in the tent, effectively reducing the floor length and usable interior volume, such that my feet were pressing against the roof mesh. On the plus side, I found a design like this compact, fairly light, and remarkably wind stable when fully pegged out.

    Nice single tent, like that you can make an over head fly with both trekking poles. Be well, Terry.

    Hideous designed tent. I had the Katmandu Mono which is the same design. Rain pools on the roof, condensation develops quickly. At 5.7 with a sleeping mat this tent would be a cramped coffin.
    It would be awkward to get in and out of. Oddly enough I don't mind the colours but I'd prefer shades of green. The only thing the Kathmandu Mono has going for is it's colour.

      The design is different. The High Side 1 is asymmetrical. I just looked up the Katmandu tent you are referring to, and it is not the same. While it is small and has similar features... def not the same.

    Thanks for review. Manufacturer’s website shows weight - 1.1kg. A very interesting tent, but the weight seems too big for its size.

      @alekseyshumilov2304 Před 5 lety

      Он тут имеет ввиду минимальный вес, но я не понимаю какой от этого прок. Разница в 230 гр, наврядли это только чехол, скорее всего ещё колышки, оттяжки. Это получается можно колышки выстругать на месте, вместо оттяжек поставить леску, ну и паковать без чехла😀

      I think the weight they show is total including packaging. On my scales it comes in at 880g.

    I really enjoy your reviews so keep up the great work.
    What single person tent do you prefer over the High Side?
    I've got the Hilleberg Akto but I'm looking for something a little bit smaller.
    Regards, Morgan

      thanks! I would say stay away from the High side. I tried to explain that it fits in this "bigger than bivy sack, but more of a bivy kind of tent".. meaning its really to small for pratical useage, but if your a trail runner it might work. I would look at some of the tents Tarptent makes instead, or the Sierra design High route FL, even the Hilleberg enan would be good

    oh sierra and your 'whacky' colours.. this tent in an camo or forest green would be perfect for wild camping in the UK on the down low.. instead we'd be raising a flag (literally)

      They do a green Highside 1 now, not shown on their website oddly, but is available on UK/EU sites.

    How long of a pole do you need to pitch this tent? I do a lot of bike packing and I have a couple 48" (122cm) carbon poles I can bring with me. Would they be long enough to properly support the ceiling? (ignore this, I meant to post about the high route, not the high side.

    How tall are you? The tent looks so tiny for the weight. At that point, one might as well cowboy camp with a bug net over your head 😉

    • @Backpackinglightse
      @Backpackinglightse  Před 5 lety +2

      Bearanoia Mom who Hikes yeah.. it was something I tried to convey that this tent is meant mainly for small bikepackers, trail runners and so on. As far as the tiny tent trend is concerned, this is one of the bigger tents within that category. But certainly small compared to other standard size solo tents.

  • @Bereit18

    Why buy one of these when you can get a terra nova laser comp. that colour scheme is awful!

    • @philip771
      @philip771 Před 3 lety

      Definitely better in green. It's horses for courses though - I've spent a long time looking at the laser comp., Photon etc but all of those styles have the inner very close to your face. Clearly lots of people don't mind that but if you're like me and you do, then 80cm of height at 1.1kg is pretty appealing.

    • @Foxtrottangoabc
      @Foxtrottangoabc Před 3 lety

      Yes I got the laser comp 1 , 95cm height , can sit up properly , cook inside the vestibule, stealth green and mine weighs about 1.2 kg all in with new pegs. I look around for other tents but again like this one it won't be as good 🤣

  • @Bereit18
    @Bereit18 Před 4 lety

    Awful colour scheme and seems a very small tent. Never really understood the obsession with saving weight. After a full day in the hills I want a decent shelter.

    • @Backpackinglightse
      @Backpackinglightse  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes.. I think I mention it in the video - these are meant more to be a substitute for a bivy sack. If viewed in that light than they are quite good. But compared to a tent they are quite bad

    870 grams? Really? Couldn't just convert that for normal human beings? Had to use grams? Awesome.

    • @Backpackinglightse
      @Backpackinglightse  Před 4 lety +5

      Funny, I say the same thing about ounces and pounds.. I mean, what the heck is an ounce? How ounces equals a pound? And why? For God's sake it cant be that hard to make up a comprehendable system for weighing stuff.. atleast with grams I know that 1000 grams equals a kilo..
