- Nor’easter? We usually get snow storms that bring from 2 to 10 inches but the March 2017 nor’easter, Stella, gave us 24-26 inches in as many hours. Sure it was a lot of snow, but we’ve seen worse in the same amount of time.
Normally I use the John Deere 2520 tractor with a bucket to plow but this snow was an odd texture and the tractor was stopped dead in it’s tracks in two feet of slippery, white snow. That was the most unusual part of this storm.
We check on the chickens for water and feed and take a tour of the area to show what we ended up with. I also show you a trick for starting your diesel tractor in super cold weather I was unaware of.

I like the acoustic guitar in the beginning.
I wish we got the snow instead of a mixture of freezing rain and snow, I'm three states south of you bug now it's almost gone but waiting for warmer temps
We still have 20+ inches on the ground and it will probably be here for a week or so. Come on up and take some! Thanks for watching
I don't think so I'm in the spring mode now and day by day I can see the snow getting smaller and turn into water haha
What part of Central New York are you located? I'm in Mexico NY in Oswego County. I do the same thing with my 1023e in the cold winters with hitting the glow plugs multiple times before starting the engine, works well.
We are in the Tully area. The glow plug trick was taught to me by a local farmer friend. Great trick. Mexico! Now that's snow country
The hutterites came to pull my kubota out and got their big JD 9000 stuck. The only thing still moving was a 2wd grader and pulled both out as daisy chain
That'll do it everytime I imagine. Thanks for watching.
Where are your tire chains?
When I can't go ahead anymore due to snow, I use the bucket to pry myself backward and get myself out.
Thanks for watching Swamp Rat! I don't use chains as they tear up the yard. I've used the bucket trick before also. It just didn't work on the slight incline I was stuck on. Kept sliding into deeper snow.
Have you looked into having your tires siped, Clean Slate? I don't know how much that would cost, but there are videos on you tube that show some of us who have had that done and claim it makes a definite difference in traction. I use my Kubota L2501 for plowing snow and working in the woods here in Iowa. I have the ag tires for several reasons and when I am on the lawn I am cautious with it and have never torn anything up. Enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing. Gary Fox, Iowa
Thanks for that tip. I'll look into it
Clean Slate Farm get a back blade and dont try scraping your yard clean leave a little then youll have no problem running chains or get a blower
I think a blower is in my future. seems like the best option
Generally you don't need to cycle the key to get extra time on the glow plugs. If you hold the key in the glow plug position even though the light goes out the plugs are still making heat until you start the engine or let go of the key. I'm 99% certain that is the case in the newer yanmars like the one in your machine.
Thanks for watching. I kind of figured that may be the case. Thanks for the heads up
Block heater
on the next coolant change it's a done deal.
Clean Slate Farm Put in on a heavy duty timer set it to come on three or four hour before your going to use it saves money does all its going to do.
Joel Adank I had one on the previous tractor. One will definitely be out on this spring with the coolant change
Beautiful property. That certainly was a good dumping late in the season.
Thanks, we love it here. And yes, it was a bit unexpected!
Kids save lots
How much snow did you get I had 8" this last storm in new york
Just a dusting of about 6 to 9 inches. In Central NY that's a significant amount but not enough to bring us to our knees
Its raining now
How is it possible. Getting stuck in snow?
Get a snowblower and some chains for your tractor
Yeah, right! For the few times we get this much snow it's not worth the $4000 +/-....yet.
nice vid looks like the JD does a nice job. I like your weight ballast box very nice what do you load into it? I'll subscribe paying it forward. you can help others by watching my video on paying it forward and helping folks build their youtube channels. "especially the tractor related channels"!
Thanks, Dave! I use crushed stone in the ballast box. I'll check your channel out.
daveknowsYeah what I called
Well that was worthless
