I Hate Everything But You
Starring Skylar Astin
Written by Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, & Adam Schlesinger
Greg:
THE SMELL OF THE WATER, KIDS SCREAMING WITH JOY
I'VE HATED CRAP LIKE THAT SINCE I WAS A BOY
WHILE EVERYONE WAS LAUGHING AND HAVING SO MUCH FUN
I WOULD MUTTER "THIS SUCKS" TIL THE DAY WAS DONE
I DETESTED MOST STUFF AND I STILL DO
YOU SEE, I HATE EVERYTHING BUT YOU
I HATE THE FEELING OF THE SUN WHEN IT HITS MY SKIN
I DON'T LIKE BANDS THAT HAVE A GUY ON MANDOLIN
I HATE WHEN PEOPLE POST PICTURES WITH THE HASHTAG "MOOD"
I HATE WHEN PEOPLE CALL BLUEBERRIES A SUPERFOOD
I HATE WHEN SOMEONE SAYS, "OOO, IT'S MAGIC HOUR"
OR WHEN PEOPLE ACTUALLY STOP AND SMELL A FLOWER
I HATE WHITE WOMEN WHO CALL THEIR ENGAGEMENT RINGS "BLING"
OH YES, I HATE EVERYTHING... BUT YOU

I HATE GUYS WHO READ MAGAZINES DEVOTED TO GOLF
I HATE FRISBEE GOLF AND WHEN PEOPLE CALL FRISBEE GOLF FROLF
I HATE WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME IF I'D EVER GET A TATTOO
I HATE COMBINATION CONDITIONER AND SHAMPOO
I HATE DOING THE WAVE AT A BASEBALL GAME
I HATE COUPLES WITH A CUTESY COUPLE NAME
I HATE WHEN SOMEONE SAYS A JOKE AND SOMEONE ELSE SAYS "ZING"
OH YES, I HATE EVERYTHING... BUT YOU
'CAUSE WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES AND I SEE YOU SMILE
WHEN YOU LAUGH AT YOURSELF AND WE TALK FOR A WHILE
JUST FOR A MOMENT, I FORGET
HOW MUCH I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY "GOTTA JET"
EVEN MORE EXAMPLES!
I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY THEY'RE GOING "OFF THE GRID"
OR WHEN SOMEONE CALLS THEIR BASEBALL CAP THEIR "LID"
I HATE MODELS WHO JUST HAPPEN TO DATE QUARTERBACKS
I HATE GROWN MEN WHO ALWAYS QUOTE CADDYSHACK
I HATE THE PHRASE LOVE CONQUERS ALL AND I HATE THAT IT'S TRUE
'CAUSE I WANT TO NOT HATE THINGS WHEN I'M WITH YOU
YOU LOVE SO MANY THINGS AND YOU HAVE SO MUCH FUN
IT MAKES ME WISH MY HATING DAYS WERE DONE
AND THERE'S ONE THING I WANT YOU TO KNOW...
I'LL ALWAYS HATE GUYS WHO NAME THEIR CARS
Rachel Bloom created a show where handsome muscular men are constantly serenading her this woman is a legend
I also love it that White Josh repeatedly asks - "why are all my friends obsessed with this girl?", because I was wondering the same thing. It logistically makes no sense that all these insanely hot guys are falling for her.

“I hate the phrase love conquers all and I hate that it’s true” HAS to be one of the most romantic lyrics ever to be written and it’s in a satirical song. This show is pure genius.
"I hate the phrase love conquers all and I hate that it's true, cause I want to not hate things when I'm with you" along with "We can't control the things we do just like I can't control that I'm in love with you" are both super sweet lyrics.
The heartbreaking part is that it's the only line from the song that we actually know he said. Later on when Rebecca's mad at him, he calls back to it.
I mean its really not true. War conquers, but close enough I suppose

Madeline C Idk old Greg didn't seem to hate stuff.. He seemed fun and carefree to me. Though I mostly just saw him in the songs. Idc how how a guy who can sing about giving a woman an UTI could be a grump.. lol
If you like Skyler, there’s a show called Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist that he’s in. It’s pretty damn good.
@@BiteSizedCrafterI think maybe before he actively tried not to care about things and just accepted the worst possible future for himself (being an alcoholic working at a bar, living with his dad, dating someone who obviously didn't like him back BECAUSE she didn't like him back, not putting an effort into his degree, etc.) whereas now he accepts his emotions and deals with them without reverting to drinking or other harmful behaviour. If I remember correctly the only 'fun outing' he and Rebecca ever went on before was that Taco festival that he basically wanted to leave as soon as they got there. She had to convince him to stay because she wasn't sure she wanted to 'settle for him' yet if you know what I mean ^^
I love this song SO MUCH. But I think too many people forget that these songs are Rebecca's PERCEPTION of conversations and situations.
If you actually watch the episode previous to this song, they are having a nice time together (they had been having a very nice time all day), and Greg literally said the words "I like it" about the water park. Rebecca is backsliding, has been neglecting her therapy for weeks, and is "splitting." This song her negative perception of their conversation, just as Settle For Me was. If you recall Rebecca had brought up his "Settle for me vibe" and he said he didn't remember their conversation being that way at all, and that he DIDN'T want her to settle for him. That's clearly what happens here (remember Rebecca was backsliding and she had literally just gotten angry at Dr Akopian and stormed out en route to the water park). In the end Greg is clearly confused that whatever he had ACTUALLY said didn't work. As they walked up to her apartment he was still trying to explain to her what he actually had said. What Rebecca was doing is called "splitting" - which is common with BPD, making everything all good or all bad, making people friend or enemy, etc, and it can be self-destructive, which is what we saw actually happened as the day went on. Rebecca said Greg hates the place and that he was miserable and that she was making him miserable, none of that was factually true, which you can see for yourself by just rewinding and watching.
I think you're right, at the end of this clip he even says (unsarcastically it seems) "at least I'm outside in the sun," which is a clue that Rebecca imagined him complaining about "the feeling of the sun when it hits his skin" in the song and everything else.
Bruh, so true
@@frankinsaneandmyrrh1202 Oh wow. I did notice the thing about the sun, but I just thought he was being sarcastic at the end. I hadn't even thought about the possibility that what he actually said might not have been even close to the song.

I swear I could hear his voice on that moment! It was so Santino!
This guy had the most difficult job of all - to replace the fantastic Santino Fontana. And I really don't like that they had to recast him. That part and where he's sitting and just gives up on playing the guitar and how his body just collapses is hilarious!
i'm rewatching, and it's funny because both greg and most of of his friends at one point said "gotta jet"
lmaooooo
I came here to comment this exact thing! I'm rerererererererewatching, and noticed already in season 1 that both Joshes say "gotta jet" and have to wonder if this song lyric is a direct reference to that. And since this is Rebecca's interpretation of Greg's feelings, is she projecting her dislike for the bro-ness of the Joshes with this line?
They probably wrote most of these examples off of things that happen in the show. We just never realized lmao
Came to say that also. Although when Greg said it, it was when he was trying to play it all casual and not care too much about Rebecca so he was pretending to be someone he wasn’t

Greg: "I hate white women who call their engagement rings bling."
Rebecca: Okay yeah that one's fair.
This is the closest I’ve come to recognizing Old Greg. It actually kinda felt like he was back again. I don’t just mean because of the new actor, but his personality has changed so much. I couldn’t recognize him at all until this song.
The frisbee golf lines make me cry with laughter every damn time. That came from someone’s real pain.
I love how in the song, Greg sings that he hates sunshine on his skin , but after the song was over he said " at least I'm outside in the sun " which means he actually likes being in the sun. this reinforces the notion that the song is Rebecca's false perception of how the conversation actually went .it wasn't actually as negative of an experience for Greg as Rebecca thought that it was.
I think that was sarcasm actually
Oh yeah 1000% sarcasm.
Totally sarcasm, He's sweating and hating it 🤣
He likely is hating things. Newfound sobriety leads to a flood of emotions

West Covina is real??!?!?!??!
Didn’t know this was a real place haha
Honestly Greg was pretty cool for most of this episode. Sure, he's not particularly enthusiastic about it being that he doesn't like water parks, but he does come along and try to be supportive of Rebecca. Even from her perspective, it's pretty obvious that he's making an effort here; he's as sunny as he gets for, well, him, he follows her to all the rides, etc. Personally I think I'd have appreciated the gesture of someone being willing to come along with me even if they don't have a particular interest just as much as if they'd wanted to go along on their own. It's sweet that he cares enough about her to come along when he sees that this matters to her. And being that that was the case, it wasn't really fair for her to be so upset with him for not being particularly excited about it. He wasn't trying to ruin it for her, he wasn't being moody, he just doesn't like Raging Waters as much as she does. He's only really here because he knows that she wants him to come. Which is probably what Greg was actually trying to say in this moment. "I don't like water parks, but I like you and I'm here because you like it," is a pretty normal sentiment, I'd think, but Rebecca just didn't understand what he was trying to say to her because she wasn't in a very good place at the time, so she misinterpreted his lack of particular enthusiasm for downright misery during their trip, which was not what he was trying to communicate to her, nor what he actually felt by any indication
so i think that's true, but i also think it's normal to be upset that your s.o. is so reluctant to do something with you that you are really looking forward to doing with them specifically. I'm sure rebecca's dreams of going to the water park with a boyfriend involved them having a great time together, not feeling like a burden who dragged someone to something. someone just putting up with something that is important to you is never a good feeling. it feels like you've opened up and shared a thing about yourself and they've said ' i guess i can tolerate that'.
I do understand that, but I also understand how unbereable its someone who's always miserable and hates everything, cuz I've been that person
i will say that when you're insecure in yourself the way rebecca was, having someone close to you not like the activity that you dragged them out to do feels like a rejection of yourself even when it isn't. the way she later on says "i know what you think, you think that im annoying" or something along those lines really betrays how she is just hyper-sensitive to how greg feels about her (and her choice of quality time)
shes not in the right, and greg's sentiment is actually sweet. shes just working off this assumption that something is wrong with her, and not looking at it from the angle that would actually benefit her.
As much as I miss Santino, and I'm trying to warm up to Skylar...this song is so on point. It's the most Greg song ever. Well done, fantastic delivery, fantastic lyrics.
Oh my god, so it IS another actor. The relief. I spent about half of that video just squinting at his face and wondering if I am really THAT BAD with faces

Wow, impressive!
people keep writing about Greg's negativity issues and how this negatively affects Rebecca and her BPD. I think you are missing the point. Rebecca's wrong perception of what a relationship is about (her inner idealized imaginative relationship vs. the true relationship). She wanted to got to Raging Waters because in her image this was the place to be with your partner. She doesn't get that Greg might not be into Water parks that much and won't have fun, which is something completely normal and honest. It doesn't make Greg a bad person. It makes Rebecca immature to expect to have every aspect of her life being covered by her partner, a treat that many BPD-people have to deal with. Also, in the episode, we learn that Paula's husband is also a fan of Raging Waters, however Rebecca never considers the idea to go at Raging Waters with him or Paula's family.
Your needs cannot be covered by one person. You need to learn that, Rebecca. Doesn't mean that your relationship to Greg is bad, however!
Not just a BDP thing, though. I think a lot of people out there are looking for a "mind twin" more than a partner
You're right and you should say it.jpeg
@Daniel Green he literally doesn't. This song is from Rebecca's unreliable narrator perspective
Greg was willing to try for Rebecca but her expectations are sometimes not realistic
@@PrincessSybilla77 Yes, good point! She still expects her significant others to feel and think exactly the same way as she does.
Here’s the level of callback in the crafting of this show: I’m rewatching Season 1 and when Greg is having his freak out over whether Rebecca loves the ‘funny and kinda charming ironic stick balloon’ or the flowers, he panics and says “I’ve gotta jet” and then bemoans his reaction to his dad.... the level of self-loathing runs deep.

As a huge Springsteen fan this song rules.
Completely agree with the 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner statement though
Why am I ruining the episode for myself by watching the songs?
No
Or are you actually ramping up your anticipation?
I guess you could do say that. I really enjoyed the episode.
SAME HERE
Honestly I had to stop myself from doing that on so many of these songs but usually it ups my expectations so much that I don't enjoy it as much. From The few times I've done it, it's almost more fun sometimes to have heard it once and then to just be able to laugh at it again with everyone else when it comes on
I have BPD and relate so damn much to the ending where she projects that onto herself and assumes that she’s ruining everything.
I love how excited he gets when he sings “even more examples”
I relate way too much to this song.
As a previously undiagnosed autistic adult who complained a lot, I used to have a hard time making other people understand that being annoyed by situations because of sensoriality issues (which I couldn't explain) or simply not liking things that other people enjoyed did not mean I "hated everything".
Here Greg is trying to explain to Rebecca that he doesn't like the place but that doesn't matter because what's matter is that he's spending time with her, and Rebecca only sees him as a bummer who doesn't like anything.
What's particularly striking to me is that most of the examples are actually very superficial things. I wouldn't categorize being annoyed by people using dumb expressions as "hating everything". Especially when he explains that he actually likes his relationship with her, which matters way more.
Greg has a negative attitude towards life because he's recovering from alcool addiction and still working and putting his life together, and also probably because it's his general temperament. But he can still enjoy things, especially what's important in life, such as relationships.
I think the toxic positivity trend really unnecessarily vilified people like me and you. I find great joy in complaining and it's hilarious to hate mundane things. It's healthy to unleash negative emotions and do it in such a comedic way. The mood of the song really fits the contents.
I think people keep taking the wrong thing away from this song. Greg hates everything but with Rebecca someone who loves practically everything he's willing to look at life from a better, happier perspective just to spend more time with her & to make both of them happy. Rebecca shouldn't have steamrolled him & was clearly not in the right headspace but I don't necessarily think it means that their relationship is toxic. They both still have work to do on themselves, and Greg realized quickly that Rebecca's reaction was because she had "fallen off the wagon" & needed to find herself again before going further.
He makes so many good points in the song. I agree with like 90 percent of them.
This is so Greg's anthem
Skylar really nailed this song and made Greg feel like the Greg we know and love. Congrats Skylar.
I want a greg medley with a duet between Skylar and Santino, but I WANT THEM TO SING EACH OTHERS’ SONGS

This song just weaseled its way into my top 5 fav CEF songs
Greg not knowing how to play musical instruments and then playing them is the most "I could if I wanted to" thing
That song also fits Nick from New Girl pretty well
the line "I hate couples with a cutesy couple name" stuck with me. Rebecca would like a cutesy couple name. It's a tiny detail but that was the moment when I realized Greg and Rebecca would probably never work out as a couple
Every single line of this is delivered to utter perfection
anyone felt uncomfortable with the new greg but grew to find him attractive later cause I did
Oh my god his Bruce springsting is amazing. Also i have not seen the episode, but God i had a feeling Rebecca and Greg would go in this direction while Greg is sober he still has alot to work on which makes me think there will be eventually a reprise of shitshow but from Rebecca's point of veiw. Yes they have a lot of chemistry but Greg does have alot of anger that he still needs to work on, and based on the other two songs it's not good for Rebecca's mental health which doesn't make it a healthy relationship. It's always been there since the start of the show.
Funnily enough, at least so far, Greg is the one who is mature and on track with his healing/therapy while Rebecca is the one having issues in this episode
@@angelitasheets i was about to say something to the same effect
@@angelitasheets I made this comment before the episode. It's gonna be a rocky road for both of them both.
To be honest, they're still both messed up hence forth their recovery matters as long as they realize that of course
@@min5963 yes I agree. I also think while it's great that Greg is commuted to AA. I also think like Rebecca he could benefit from therapy.
I like how Rebecca's just like "yeah, okay, that's fair" the whole time. It's like Greg is the only one cynical enough to actually say what most people believe anyway :P
Pretty damn good Springsteen, Skyler. Props.
No, Greg didn't actually say that he hates everything. But he didn't NOT say that either. The meaning of his message and the true message of the song are the same, I think.
So, to paraphrase, it was something like "Yeah, I can be negative sometimes, but I'm working on it. Your positivity and enthusiasm made me see my negativity for what it is, so thank you."
To which Rebecca's mind fixated on the "I'm negative" part and sort of blanked out the other bits, because when you're in a shame spiral compliments simply do. Not. Compute. I'm sure she HEARD those parts but her mind blocked them out because she wasn't in the headspace to absorb them.
BPD is, more than a personality disorder even, a reaction to trauma and a dissociative disorder. In her past, accepting and absorbing compliments was probably dangerous to her, because the people in her life who made her feel good about herself either rescinded it or left her. It's easier to just not open yourself up to that, and there are subconscious mechanisms in place to make sure you CAN'T, even if you want to.
Not to say that it's not a behavior that can be worked on or that it's IMPOSSIBLE to accept compliments. But it takes practice, and it's scary.
This is honestly one of my favorite songs from the entire show
I think that move he does when he says "I hate doing the wave at a baseball game" actually got me pregnant

I love how the lyrics in the description are in caps
I did not expect him to sound like this while singing and it still throws me through a loop
❤️ Skylar Astin
One thing I really like about this song is how it connects to Greg in season one. At a few parts in the background like near 0:52, you can hear the first few notes played in OMG I Think I Like You which symbolizes Rebecca and Greg’s love
Very seriously considering naming my new car "Greg" because of this song.
Update: I did it.
Damn he hates it
I’ve listened to this song so much that I’m ready to lip sync for my life!
And don't fuck it up!
God Imagine if they out of nowhere tossed this onto RPDR or they threw die when im young if they ever have Rachel on as a Judge
@@crunchevo8974 she was on Season 12, Episode 9 - unfortunately, her musical genius was not considered in the lipsync song choice :(
@@simplyindispensable yeah they did and i squealed like a little girl when i saw her lol
EVEN MORE EXAMPLES!!!
"You hate everything, and you hate this place, and it's making you miserable, so I'm making you miserable."
That hits home too hard.
1:36 DAMN
My new screen saver
Rachel Bloom is beyond talented and beautiful.....she's SO fantastic and awesome and cool!
I relate to this guy so much, he directly speaks to my soul 🤣
very off-topic but in my mom, greg's moves, and josh's sweet dance moves i related to greg on such an uncomfortable level, i physically find it hard to watch the episode
This is such a great pastiche of Bruce Springsteen songs. I love it. Rachel Bloom may really be a genius.
One of the best songs of the season.
They added a riff from Oh My God I think I like you
Good catch!
oh gosh I might be in love with skylar now 😂
You might? I am :D
I missed the red handkerchief in his pocket the first time I saw this. Nice touch.
What an amazing job Skylar has done as Greg and this song nails it for me! So Greg!
