Established in 1960, the Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd. produced an assembly of wrist watches based on 100% imported components. A decade later this dependence on foreign components got substantially reduced through in digenisation. There were sixteen varieties of watches manufactured by the HMT, Bangalore. With two units in Bangalore & one in Srinagar set up at a cost of Rs.4.7 million with a capacity of 2 lakh watches p.a.,HMT was expected to produce 1 million watches against the prevailing demand of 5 million watches per year.The turnover of the three units in 1975-76 exceeded Rs.13 cr. A film about the Hindustan Machine Tools and its watch making units.

The manufacturing process shows how far ahead we were once upon a time in watchmaking. The shop-floor, the apparatus, the workers and the industrial set-up, all seem so sophisticated. Had this been a private limited company, then HMT would have followed the Ray Ban model of becoming a luxury product today. Sadly, the babus and the government never saw the value of sustainability. Today the HMT watch factory in Bangalore is nothing but a ghost of it's former self, instead of having become the original heralder of a genuine 'Made in India' institution.
The watches themselves are pretty shit though, the glass scratches easily, the metal was amongst the flimsiest and cheapest I've ever seen and the movement was pretty inaccurate, their greatest blessing was that they were/are cheaper than any watch ever so any major repairs rarely crossed a 500 rs while the watches themselves were maybe double that cost. A workhorse for a country that was low on funds no doubt, but later Timex, Titan and Citizen did a far better job at a slight premium.
Saying HMT could've become luxury is like saying BPL could've become Sony, if a private company like TITAN that was owned by TATA couldn't crack the luxury market with Xyliss, then HMT has no chance,they can play at the lowest entry level market at best.
I still have hmt automatic watch with me... My grandfather gift to my dad and my dad gift to me... Best thing is still in working condition 😁😁
Hii I also have hmt watch which was given by my grandfather to my mother, but by mistake in my childhood I ruined it's working mechanism. And I don't find where it can be repaired can you help me with something....😔😔

I gifted my husband HMT kohinoor in 1983, my husband is no more today , but HMT watch still it is showing the correct time , that is HMT, really India's pride!
Very sad for Indian watch industry. In China, mechanical watchmaking is in boom. Seagull is currently one of biggest watch movement manufacturers, standing among giants such as Seiko, and ETA.

I served HMT watches for 33 years with a precision of less than 5 microns. Can any company beat that, no i guess. My two HMT watches are 25 years old and still running. Thanks HMT for all your blessings.

The problem was not upgradation, they do have among the best a watchmaking technology. The problem is two fold: 1) the safari babus leading it dont care, are incompetent when it comes to business and marketing 2) Indian people hate local artifacts amd run after 'imported' stuff. Even local brands have to name themselves Titan and Peter England to sound foreign in order to compete.

Still wr get HMT watches but its horrible to visit website of HMT, no updates on website, boring webpages. HMT has to adopt Technology to boost the sale.
