  • This is a "How to" QUICK GUIDE on how to get from the LaGuardia Airport to Times Square in Manhattan by public transportation for a grand total of only $2.90 at the time this was filmed in December 2023. When researching how to make the journey myself I came across WAY too many videos that were 20, 30 and even 40+ minutes long and who has time to watch all that? Not me. So, I decided to make a better one for those seeking good information QUICKLY!
    Taxis and Ride Share's cost way too much ($60-$100) and don't really save you that much time anyway. If you're looking to save a little cash and have about an hour to spare to get to Manhattan, this is the video for you.
    1. Follow all signs for Baggage Claim and Ground Transportation.
    2. Buy a metro card from the machines inside on the Ground Transportation level one by door #4.
    3. Follow signs for Q70/M60 buses. The waiting area is outside on the Ground Transportation level one by door #2.
    4. Insert your just purchased metro card into the machine by door #2 and get a receipt.
    5. Get on the Q70 bus and take it to the Roosevelt/Jackson Heights subway station. It took us 13 minutes to get there.
    6. Depending on where you are going in Manhattan, take the E, F, R or 7 lines. R goes to Manhattan - Exit at the Times Square/42nd stop. The whole from LaGuardia to Times Square trip took us 55 minutes total by the Q70 and R Train.
    The metro card machine in the video displays the price for the 7 Day Unlimited card as $34 however a $1.00 fee is added to the transaction for getting a new card. This is why the voiceover in the video states the cost was $35 and not $34. You can also use your smart phone to pay for the subway fair via Apple Pay Google Pay or OMNY
    M60:
    You can also take the M60 bus from LaGuardia to get to Manhattan. The only difference is you will have to pay the $2.90 right when you get on the M60 bus and then your transfer to a subway/train will be free if you transfer within 2 hours. Whereas the Q70 Link Bus is free and you won't have to pay the $2.90 until you transfer to a train, where you will then use a $2.90 swipe on your metro card. M60 is probably the better option to take if you are going straight to uptown Manhattan but you can always transfer to a train that goes to midtown or anywhere else if you are not. BOTH THE Q70 AND THE M60 WILL GET YOU TO MANHATTAN FOR $2.90.
    Wilson's Tip: Download the CityMapper App for detailed step by step instructions on how to take public transportation from Point A to Point B.
    We paid $70 for two Unlimited 7 Day Metro Cards and rode the subway 23 times each or 46 rides total between the both of us. 46 rides would have cost us $133.40 if we paid the $2.90 per ride. The Unlimited 7 Day Metro card saved us $63.40.

    I'm kinda glad they didn't make an AirTrain for LGA - the original plan was bonkers. LIRR from GCT takes 13 mins to Woodside, Queens - then a quick trip on the Q70 and you're right there.

    Do we need to buy tickets at all for the subway, or can we literally just tap our credit card / debit card

      You can use those three forms of payment in the video and description via smart phone.

      Thanks! The Q70 does not cost anything to ride but you need to have a receipt from the machine at the waiting area showing at least one fare for the train you are about to ride. These receipts are not typically taken but can be spot checked by MTA Police at random.

    Can you use apple pay instead of metro card when buying the bus ticket?

      Yes

      @gawi4405 Před měsícem

      No, but you don't need the ticket for the Q70, it's free. But if you have apple pay you won't need a MetroCard at all on your trip, you can tap to pay on all subways and buses.

    Does metro card offer a military discount?

    • @CastawayEscapes
      @CastawayEscapes  Před 6 měsíci

      The machines definitely don’t, but the MTA website says some discounts are offered on train fares like the LIRR and Metro North with an Active Duty ID. Try their website for more info: new.mta.info/fares/lirr-metro-north

      @@mangofett6210 No problem. Definitely download the CityMapper app if you don’t have it already. It’ll make your life a whole lot easier with public transportation in NY especially with some of the more confusing subway stations. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays!

    Or just use the new Contactless pay instead of buying a card.
