    The only way I can successfully capture flying Tree Swallows is doing just what you are doing. Find the perch and then get them either flying in or flying out. Kudos to those who can capture them in air without a perch in sight. So hard to do and my skill level is not quite there. Any tips appreciated. As usual, Rich, I so like your putting the birds welfare first. I know a birder who plays recorded mobbing calls to stir up different species to show people on his bird walks. Can you imagine the stress he causes to nesting birds!! Many of us have objected to this unethical practice but little has been done. So when I see people establishing ethically sound birding practices, I have to say a big thank you! Lovely photos at the end. Keep them coming!

      Hi June,
      Great to hear from you and nice to see that you do similar, I've got a few handheld shots but they are quite challenging to get as you well know, still love the challenge! Thanks very much, as Elvis said they are 'Always on my mind' their welfare must come first. Yeah using calls to elicit a response is bad practice especially in the breeding season, stressful time as it is and you get a loud mobile bird call and the males get very worked up, not fair really! I've had words with people but they don't like it, it's just not fair, thanks for saying and it's always a comfort knowing others feel the same. Will do and have a great week. Quite a long video out next Sunday so I hope you can tune in again. Thanks R👍

    Hi Richard really enjoyed your video such a brilliant park to visit, seeing a large range of different species outstanding video the place looks so clean tidy and well maintained from what I could see, we just got back from Norfolk had lots of sighting’s of the Marsh Harriers but long distance away, we use the Merlin app I find it really useful especially trying to identify what birds are around, really the bits of information about the birds as well,I have tried avoiding using that word but the was FANTASTIC 😂😂😂😂 I’m all ways using that word can’t help brilliant video Richard thank you for sharing it with us. Some lovely footage & images there Rich. Just shows what’s there if you get out there & go & look with your eyes open, even in a green space area of a huge city nature will find a way.
    Those red winged blackbirds & tree swallows are striking birds, & the Kildare at the end looks very similar to our ringed plover here in the UK. Great stuff mate, enjoyed that.
    Off topic, but I noticed you’re now using a DJI pocket 3, would appreciate your feedback on it - maybe a pro’s & cons review, or comparison against your Go-Pro?

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hey Nick,
      Thanks my friend, it really is amazing what you can get in a busy place and I doubt I'll ever look a city the same again. Naively I always thought they were pretty devoid of some of the more interesting species but I was wrong, can't believe how well they adapt to us taking over their home, but comforting to see that all is not lost and they are people who are willing to help them thrive and survive!
      It's amazing how some of their commoner species are so striking, they all have a place in our admiration, yeah the Killdeer with an unusual name really do look like our smaller plovers, same family and quite an extensive line.
      Thanks for the bit about the DJI, I've been meaning to cover it for those CZcamsrs who are thinking of changing their setup, I'll get some together pretty soon as see what I can kick out, be useful as it has many Pro's and a few Con's!
      You are very kind mate, I'll think of you when I have that brew and a Carrot cake. What a gent. Rich 😀👍

      @RichardBirchett that ability to have 800mm on full frame on the Canon side is awesome!
      For now, I have to switch to that APS-c mode, which acts like 1.6x, turns the 60mp into 26mp camera, but gets me close to 900mm from a 200-600mm

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@DunrobinOntario Yeah it's pretty handy and that reach has it's uses in certain situations. Still you can't grumble at having 26mp, my Canon R3 only has 24.1 and I find that is fine for what I need, limited on cropping but with a good reach it's not always needed if you frame your subject correctly in-camera, and 900mm is a good max distance especially for small in the frame birds. 😄

    • @DunrobinOntario
      @DunrobinOntario Před 2 měsíci +1

      @RichardBirchett for sure, totally agreed! Plenty of detail as long as you get it close originally! It's amazing how much these modern cameras have improved at avoiding noise, even when you crop... barely much to fix on the back end on lightroom or whichever!

    Hi Richard . I remember seeing your first impressions video of the 200 to 400mm EF lens with the 1.4 extender. Are you using that lens as much as you envisaged? I also have a 300mm 2.8 L and the 500f4 L but always fancied the 200 to 400 for its versatility.

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks Paul, I use it quite a lot and have found I do more than my fixed EF 500 f4 Mk II, to have that range from 200-560 with the Tele kicked in really does have so many advantages over fixed focal for obvious reasons. If I really need the light I do use the 300 or 500 but for an out all day lens I can take the 200-400 and it will do all that I require it to do, so versatile. And the optical quality and weight really is a massive bonus, I can hand hold quite happily, if your were on a Safari it would be amazing, the focal range, ample light it's superb for it. Never regretted buying it. Thanks again for watching. 👍
