- The only thing Steve learned in his junior high school Latin class was the meaning of the word “Volvo”. Beyond Steve’s academic failings, the Volvo 240 enjoyed two decades of global sales success with virtually no styling changes. How did Volvo pull it off? Watch and see!

It rolls....I'm 61 and learned the meaning of Volvo..
Thanks Steve
I had latin back in 78, was born in 64 also. I loved Latin and my teacher was great. He just died a little while back. He was in the nursing home with my mom.
Good morning, Retired last year. Enjoy your junkyard adventures. Morning coffee, Steve! A good start to the day. Thank you.
I always loved that style of Volvo! My brother had a 1979 two doors 242 gt with the 4speed manual transmission in 1981. Man I’ll never forget it! It was a great car for it’s day! I used to love driving it. That one could still be restored! Not in bad shape at all!
Super Shane the cameraman! Good work!
I bought a 1993 240 new and still drive it today. I have a 1974 145, a 1970 145, 1992 940 and my project car, a 1965 122s. Yes, I like old Volvos....a lot.
I've had 4 Volvos, still have my 98 v70xc loved them all.
When I heard "Volvo" is derived from the Latin for "I roll," I did an eye roll. 😮
Morning Steve you crack me up you still have books from high school That's cool Love the junkyard crawl Peace love your way
My mom had a Volvo wagon. Great car. I would definitely like to have an older one like that
Mom gifted me her 69/70 Volvo sedan, dark blue back in the mid 80s. Car was ahead of its time compared to American vehicles of the period in so many ways. Good runner too. Aside from having to mess with the dual Strombergs in the summer to get started. Ok after warming up.
My father worked for Volvo for many years….exceptional cars! I’ve owned several, including a 240 and an s60! Currently have a a ‘98 C70 Coupe with 38k original miles ! Bought it for my daughter, but she’s not a fan of 2 doors, so currently looking to sell it and get her an s60 !
One of the best cars ever made !
4:13 Even as a wreck it's door still sounds solid and high quality when closing.
I loved my 240. I miss it. Would get one again
Would have never guessed that Volvo was a Latin phrase , never mind started by SKF
I recently pulled a 242 out of a garage where it was parked in 1989. The car still has a "Dukakis for President" bumper sticker on it. Got her running and now I'm fixing the odds and ends that go wrong after a long nap. One indication of the "Volvo Mindset" is the bracket that holds the two horns behind the grill. It is steel, and must be at least 1/8" thick - talk about overkill. But the entire car is built like that. The front brake calipers have 4 pistons on each side, each pair on an independent hydraulic circuit, fed by a 2 reservoir master cylinder. They are impressive from every angle.
👍🏻🇦🇺💯worked for Volvo in 1979 . MOPAR lad here .
We're all pulling for you Steve. Hope to see you soon
The Volvo 240 from 1988-1993 is prob the #2 car of all time behind the Mercedes W123 for safety, reliability and longevity if you can keep steel away from salt. My parents had two, the 1984 sedan they sold with 400,000 plus miles to a friend who put two daughters through college with it, then he used it as a beater dump run car a few years after that before junking it. They were the 3rd owners of a 1990 wagon they bought in 2000 with 134k on it. I did a timing belt and full tune up and pads and rotors all the way around and the only real problem it gave them in 100k miles and 10 years was a fuel pump relay. They sold it to a friend with 250k who drove it from CT to NJ 3 times a week for work for 5 years before selling it to his friend with 325k miles on it who drove it 5 years and lost over drive and 3rd gear after a couple of years, the rear axle bushings were shot several years before but he just drove around town with it as a beater. It would prob still be going if a loaded dump truck hadnt wedged it between a large elm tree and folded it. The rear discs on them wasnt something new, even entry level Mercedes diesels had them starting in 1968. Back in its day the 240 was a yuppie status symbol and around the same price as a W123 Mercedes. Another legendary car there hasnt been a domestic made car yet that could touch for legend status. These days you would be hard pressed to get top dollar for a 1985 lincoln or Caddy but a W123 or Volvo 240 with low miles is worth its weight in gold. People still appreciate them for their safety and reliability and longevity after all these years. To see one in a junk yard is tragic because unless its rotted out it prob had 200,000 more miles left in it.
I had a 91, awesome car. Comfortable, quiet, built like a tank. Cam shaft broke in half drove it home 12 miles. Great car.
had my crank pulley fall off while i was driving mine once
How many miles?
@@bannedbycommieyoutube5time920 it was like 300k and something
Old Volvos and Volgas are among some of the best cars ever made.
Classic Brick!! I always, and still do want a 240. The turbo wagons were definitely the king. The GT coupe was a sharp looking vehicle as well. Great by, thank you.
Another great episode, Steve! Enjoyed the 'blast from the Latin past', and I learned alot about Volvo and even SKF. Did not know SKF goes all the way back to 1912. Amazing stuff! Thanks again!
The "Imperial" of 4 banger derbies
The steel in those old Volvos was great.
I never knew what Volvo meant now I do thank you Steve
Love this guy funny and a car genius
Thank You Frank! -Steve Magnante
You were born to do junkyard crawl, i have learned more watching your videos than I have working on cars for the last 40 years ,
I also took Latin for a year in HS but in the 90s, and i didnt work for MotorTrend really but i was an intern at the 5th avenue office for a few months. Great videos i watch them all
You mentioned those Volvo, cars,Paul Newman had one with a Ford V 8 in it,great video
I was born in 86 and we used the same First Year Latin Book at Boston Latin Academy in the 90s and 2000s
First car was a 1974 142GL. I bought it in 1984 from my friends' Dad. He paid $8000 CAD for it brand new and sold it to me for $200 - but it had accident damage and had been sitting for a few years. Leather, heated seats. 4 wheel disks. Fuel Injection. Manual O/D on the column. Kept it for a year and should have never sold it.
Mr. B. Here ! Morning too all ! Steve I saw LS 3 Volvo in MA ! Very informative ! Thank you ! 😊😊😊😊
Morning
Tempus fugit. Amazing how time flies. I recall the Volvo commercials highlighting their turbo option.
I concur about Latin. You did better than I did. Latin was a nightmare.
Id love to have one of those volvos. Great cars
In Sweden where i come from the 240 was one of the most popular car back in the day and last 1992 model is very sought after!
Thank you Steve hope you get better soon
The only thing I know about Volvo (+Sabb) is that owners do not tip the valets who park their cars!

Thank U for the Volvo 240 shout out yesterday at the auction! 🥰
Good Morning Gents ! 🇺🇸
I worked for a business equipment company delivering when I was a teen. One of their delivery vehicles was a 1963 Volvo. It looked very 50's. It had a 4 speed on the floor. That thing was indestructible. Teenager's running the crap out of it every day. Only vehicle they had that we never had to add oil. Eventually, from slamming gears, somebody blew 2nd gear out. Hey Steve, I took Latin back in my grammar school days. Yeah, pig Latin from professor Moe's Howard.....oodgay orningmay!
Always brings me back to a Letterman joke "Why does she want me to touch her Volvo?|
Back in the '70s and '80s, the woman that taught Home Ec class in our high school, (and her farmer husband) owned one of those Volvo cars.
I don't know what model year, other than it was a mid-'70s model.
At the time that I took her class (1979), she was in her mid-50s.
She loved that car.
Had a 73 145. Loved that thing.
Who would have guessed Steve was a ‘Latin-o’ ?
Seriously though, I had a 244DL sedan and later a 760 Turbo back in the day. Loved them both to death at the time..,👍
Well, he's partially Italian and Italian gets its roots from Latin.
Parents had the gold one from the brochure you showed but it wasn't as good as earlier ones we had because it was the 6cyl and not the crazy reliable 4 cyl.
I should start driving my 66 Volvo wagon again. Never knew that's what "Volvo" ment! Then again I took shop class in high school. 😂
Have been driving Volvos since l got my license in '80 -- almost 45 years. Still driving my v70 2003 Volvo, a car that is now 20 years old and still keeps on working as l commute to work daily. After many years of driving only one make, the only weakness is that they are underpowered. Note that Volvo is never used as a getaway car!
But, there's a speedy Volvo!!!
The 856,i think, with turbo !
In the early 90's i had an '80 240 GLE.Had a sticker on the driverdoor that said testcar, first owner Volvo cars. 1 of 5 exports that didn't leave Sweden. B21F and 4 speed with electric overdrive.Powersteering,AC,skyroof, power doorlock .No leather or powerwindows. The only car i owned twice.Sadly, rust always win.
I have an ‘05 S40 2.5T and it’s a fun little car. It’s like a go kart compared to my Silverado lol. My youngest daughter just bought herself a ‘19 S60 T-6 that thing is nice, and my wife drives a ‘16 XC60 which is also a great car.
My wife got hit head on at about 55 mph in her ‘14 S60 and walked away. The other guy had to take a helicopter ride.
The ‘05 S40 was my daughter’s first car and I bought it off of her to use a a commuter/winter beater.
Thanks from sweden 🇸🇪
Steve makes a junked car more attractive to buy than car ads do for new cars.
Click and Clack always recommended these to parents for their kids first car.
Nice
Also did 6 cylinder models as well Iirc? Old man had several of the earlier 144 Saloon & 145 Estates. Those things were built like tanks..
Expensive to maintain and drank petrol worse than 7 litre engines.
2849 cc B28/B280 (PRV) V6 and a diesel the six inline 2383 cc D24 I6 from VW!
I had the same Latin book and did just as well!
My sister took Latin because she wanted too! And she was good at it. She live in poverty in a trailer. She refused to take any classes that had any job skills. "I'm not taking typing because I don't want to be a secretary." I took typing.
Always liked the turbo wagons.
Body on that still looks pretty good. Awesome video great history.
Morning Steve... we had two older 1 series cars in auto shop back in the day, these cars were like tanks. One of them we squeezed in an old 352 Ford with its automatic (I think it came out of a 60 edsel) and that tank became a real tire smoking rocket! Ahh those were the days of junkyards full of great v8s and car bodies to match
We done a few 240s with small block Chevys with the Rams Head exhaust manifolds they clear nicely
Lemon.... Ours was in the shop more than on the road. Everyone else who had one in my town said the same thing. I had a wonderful 1998 V90, it was a good car
Good job Steve. Rudolph is looking
Dapper.
Christmas keeps getting earlier
Thanks for mentioning saab. I love those cars.
Neighbors had a 1982(?) 240. Not only did it have a distinct look but the engine sound was very unique. You knew it was a Volvo just by the sound.
Back in the day, I knew there was a Volvo was in our driveway whenever I heard my brother-in-law out in the kitchen asking my mom for another loan…….😂
Our cat could recognize the sound of the olde 240. He knew then the family was home again! Also, the starting of the car, the air coming in, vibration of the engine on its rubber mounts as it would catch... l can still hear it.
I always thought Volvo stood for "Very Odd Looking Vehicular Object", but that's just me. A certain type of person bought them. A girl I dated in middle school, her parents had two of them, a 1972 green one and a 1985 light blue 240 like this one featured. Her parents bragged about how safe they were. One time my parents dropped me off at her house---in our 1983 Coupe DeVille, which my father bought prior to working at the same dealership that we bought the car from. Yes, many languages have their roots in Latin and if you know Latin, you can usually figure out other languages easily. My father took Latin in school and he went to Catholic school, which often said mass in Latin back then.
I can hear the Latin teacher now, "D. Magnante, "Noli scribere in libro!!!" (Mr. Magnante, don't write in the book). Mr. Magnante was a rebel writing in books long before it was fashionable. I think the MA Board of Education still has a demerit for not returning those books (the rest of which are likely sitting in a landfill, or hopefully recycled into new books). My sister was ahead of me in school and I often got a book or two that she had, and we even had the same teacher. One of my high school English teachers was so old that my mom had him in the 1960s, my sister had him in the 1980s and I had him after that. That's how much of the "furniture and fixtures" this teacher was. I took Spanish for 7 years in middle and high school. I was originally slated to take French, but oddly enough, that was paired with woodwind instruments. My mother called the school and said, "#1 my kid isn't taking French. I'm not paying for a tutor. My husband and daughter took it in school and can help if there's an issue. #2 is that I don't know where those instruments have been, no way my kid is playing one". I got moved to a higher honors class (which was my mother's argument in the first place) and wound up with Spanish and playing the violin. Never once did I have to ask my father or sister with help in Spanish. I can still read a subway ad and know what it says without looking at the English. I used to joke around with my coworker's husband who didn't speak English up until a few years ago. He bought an International Truck and my coworker asked me about it. I said, "Basura!" She laughed and told him what I said in Spanish. He laughed. He now can speak some English and is a fast learner. I did win the Spanish award in HS.
Many of these were assembled at Torslandaverken or (Torslanda Works in English). I always felt that the two ladies of ABBA were much better Swedish imports than anything from Trolhattan or Gothenburg, but I digress. No VIN, can't win, but the 10th digit of the VIN is a "M" for the 1991 model year, and this is possibly code 31 Midnight Blue exterior paint. PRV stood for "Peugeot, Volvo, Renault" who jointly designed the PRV engine. It was a heap. You have "Pitiful (Peugeot), Reprehensible (Renault) and Vile (Volvo)" all in one package. Volvo was the best of the bunch there and also made marine and industrial engines.
Volvo used to be (as shown in that manual) located in Rockleigh, NJ, but they are now at (quite amusingly) 1800 Volvo Place, Mahwah, NJ. The number 1800 is significant as that was a popular Volvo model in years past. Mahwah, NJ was also home of a Ford assembly plant until it closed in 1980.
The masses always say they are long lasting durable reliable machines but I never see any on the road. I'm in the midwest and the only volvos I see are semi trucks
yeah, one would "think" if the car is so great, more would be on the road... so either there's alotta stupid people or the car sucks? Must be a downside to having one, besides the styling being boring AF
Volvo and Mack are one company now.
My first car was a 1979 264GL. Looked like a 240. To this day I’ve never seen another one.
1975 was the fist year for the 240 and it came both with pushrod and overhead camed engines. My first car was a 75 242 with b20 and i wish i had not traded it.
I remember when you wrote your name in front of the school book.
Steve we love you!!!
There were lots of these on the roads here in Sweden's eastern neighbour Finland, when new they were kind of a sensible and safe but boring family man's cars, but nowadays many of the surviving ones being hotrodded by youngsters with turbocharged B230 engines making some 4-500 horsepower. Who would have guessed this back in the days :)
If you are a Jeep guy many of the Wrangler TJ's, Cherokee Xj's and Grand Cherokee ZJ's used the Dana 30 front axle up front.. Which is the same unit used in the rear of the Volvo 240's and 940's, they are excellent donors for the Eaton G60 locker that came in the turbo cars and some early-mid 90's non-turbo applications. I installed one of these in a 99 jeep wrangler and it works really well as a low speed locker for the front axle. (Great for 4 wheeling not to good for rock crawling FYI) I drive moderate trails most of the time and it works great! It locks in forward and reverse at a wheel speed difference of 100 RPM side to side and unlocks at speeds above 25 MPH. Perfect for a front diff and best of all.. No noise like a lunch box locker. These Eaton diffs have gotten a bad rap from GM guys as you can and WILL blow em up if you hammer em like a drag racing diff or like to do figure 8 doughnuts at wide open throttle in a bumpy field but, it is what it is! I got mine at the local pick and pull for $40 and for the price ya cant beat the performance!
Great info! I'll put it "in my hat" for possible future use. -Steve Magnante

When i was little my doctor had a orange late 1970s or early 1980s orange 240 wagon
Thank you Steve.
My parents had a bunch of Volvo's over the years. First one was a 1981 240 wagon 4-spd manual with push-button overdrive. It was one of the cars I learned to drive on in the late '80s. Odo quit working at 181k miles, so probably had well over 200k on it when rust doomed it to the scrap yard. I was kinda bummed since I wanted it. They also had an '89 740 sedan 5-spd manual, 2 early 2000's S60s (my dad's was a T5 with the cool "space ball" shifter - I wanted that one as well, but a deer running across the road totaled it). The other was a base auto that was also totaled when someone rearended it on the DC beltway. They now have a 2010 C70 (bought new). They say they well never buy another Volvo since they can no longer be had with a manual. My dad replaced his S60 with a 2015 WRX.
I also took a year of Latin in 9th grade (Harrisonburg High School, Virginia) and think I did just as well as you did :) And I still have my English-Latin dictionary that I "forgot" to return.

Interesting history of Volvo AND your experience with Latin. I actually liked Latin (@ a Boston school). I never owned or drove a Volvo, but credit needs to be given for the bar they set for SAFETY other manufacturers needed to attain.
In the late 70’s,early 80’s I had an 78’ 242 DL. Blue on blue, manual transmission AND Sunroof. It was a a fun car. Handled great and had great acceleration. Perfect college car.
Thanks for the Volvo info very informative I'll definitely look at these cars alot differently than l did before also loved that self portrait Steve!!! 👍😎
Read a magazine article years ago where somebody put a 5.0L Ford in a wagon. Looked quite interesting doing smokey burnouts. Speaking of Fords, there's one of my favorite Thunderchickens back there behind ya Steve. Lots of potential in those '90's Birds.
Problem is you need an overdrive gearbox as the final drive is too short and the tranny tunnel is not too big.
Letterman had one, Paul Newman too I think
Newman had the first one, let Letterman drive it and proceeded to have Newman build a identical one..

The interesting thing about the rear discs and the Corvette: the rear discs on the 240 had drum brakes in the center of the hub for the parking brake which was outlawed by the NHSC with the exception for the Corvette.
Great video. I"ve owned several of these and miss them when I don't have one. Good ones are getting quite expensive but there are still deals out there.

Interesting and funny.Always a treat Steve.
My dad's first new car was a 242. My dad bought me a 740 (also shared parts with the 240) after I crashed my car...I ended up owning 5 others. They all had high miles but ran and looked good. The best I had was a 92 740 wagon, fully loaded, turbo charged. They held up better to salt/snow than most and had a reliable 4 banger.
Excellent video Steve! 👍👍💯🇺🇸
My parents bought one of these new in '82. It took us everywhere as kids. My parents even drove it across Canada pulling a Bonair tent trailer with me as a youngster. I learned to drive in that car. Sadly, my brother totaled it about 20 years ago. Thanks for the memories, Steve.
Well, if it makes you feel any better, Steve, I actually got kicked out of French by the French teacher herself. For some odd reason, she was really steamed at me and out the door I was sent. But I was no fan of that school and we moved soon afterwards, anyway, so it turned out well for me. And returning to California was such a relief. And it was weird to be called a Yankee by those Southern kids. And I even calmly told them, "I'm not from the North, I'm from California." But it didn't work, no friends for me and O well. 😀
Great story! I wasn't a big trouble maker in school but in that very Latin class a kid named Dan LeMaitre was a super wise ass. Ms. Gauch finally had enough of it and said "Danny, GET OUT". Out he walked. About 4 minutes later - through the open door of the classroom - a roll of toilet paper slowly unraveled right up to Ms. Gauch's desk. She ignored it. Dan soon "moved on" to (I think) Northfield Mt. Herman, an elite prep school that is.......right next to Bernardston Auto Wrecking! No joke. The Northfield kids occasionally wander through the woods into the far end of the junk yard and BREAK GLASS. Not cool but kids will be kids. Today Dan runs a hugely successful sea food importing enterprise on Nantucket. It all turned out OK in the end. Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante
