“Different types of students are going to connect with different types of teachers.” Brilliant; I have been telling this to people interested in other fields - for example, when people say ‘oh I can’t become an artist because there are so many artists’; you only need your niche, because you’re an individual and as an artist you will be original in that way as an individual - doing whatever it is you do, and everything is an art to a degree.

Dude.. Your first 40 seconds of your video absolutely hit me to the core. Holy SHIT! that freaked me out because that's my EXACT highest anxiety in life/paranoia if you wanna call it that if competition gets to know my ideas they will do the same. I'm very competitive, yet I hate looking at the competition, it makes me anxious and overwhelmed that "theres so many doing this out there, theres no way I will make it". Refreshing to see I'm not the only one who hates observing competition and likes to just focus on their own goal without the distraction/anxiety of that.

Useful video for novice teachers who teach online during covid-19.
A mistake that i made was relying too much on loyal students and tailoring lesson and course content too much to their specific needs. It ended up lacking broad appeal. Once I started creating more of a standardized course progression, more students started taking an interest.
How does creating course content to tailor the student end up hurting you? I would think this is what students would want. How did you create a standardized course progression?

Hi Jack. I think your video is most informative and you have encouraged me to take the initial steps to working online as a conversational English teacher. I did obtain my TESOL qualification, a few years ago but was unable to get a foothold in the market. I travelled instead to Asia where I gave free English lessons to different individuals and really loved it. People have always told me that they thought I was a natural teacher but it is only of late that I began to believe them. My next step is to step up my operation and prepare to find students online to teach and also ways to market my teaching business.

Thank you for your video. I’m glad that after all, you’ve learnt from your mistakes and now you’re kindly sharing your experiences. I feel more confident after hearing them. My story is even more sad: I’ve worked as ESL teacher in China for 4 years, but I’m not a native speaker. I’ve neutral accent but many companies are still prefer to hire those who have passports from America, Australia, so on. And I often a lack of confidence, only because my mother language isn’t English.

I think my biggest mistake was getting sidetracked by far too many other things. I'm getting myself back on track, getting ready to upload videos to CZcams, using a blog, using Patreon to offer services, and I'll be getting a mailing list set up. I have more than 11 years experience teaching ESL, but that was in person, not over the internet. This is a shift for me.
I think that's a common struggle!

I’m a medical student trying to start a side job, so I decided to start a page on instagram and advertise conversational English classes to the Middle East and see what happens. I didn’t think i’d receive an insane amount of messages of people who are interested and willing to pay.
So now i’m scared shitless and kinda putting it off because I don’t know if I could do it😂 I have some experience teaching and I am a native speaker but...self-doubt! I hope everything goes well for you! I love that you’re planning everything out :)
@@fasogeeek It's normal to have doubts when trying something completely new, but we would never achieve anything if we gave in to them. Imagine all the challenges you will have to face as a medical student and then once you have qualified! Most of us would be more afraid of that! Lol. Perhaps the difference is that you feel less prepared? If that's the case, you could always do a TEFL course to gain more confidence - although we usually gain confidence through practice- and you have a ready audience! This income is to boost your earnings whilst you study, right? So, I say give it a try, what have you got to lose? At worst, you may just learn that it wasn't for you. Sounds like you have lot more to gain from having a go!

This is an absolutely great video. Thank you so much. I agree there is chemistry and connection between a teacher and students. And since everybody is different. I do have certain type of students. Others have their certain type of students. In a way, competition is not something that we should worry about but finding right customers for us. They are out there looking for right tutors for them, too. Making connections to other tutors are also important. Thanks for the tip! That's right. "We need to get out of our comfort zone some point soon. It is a daunting task but it gets easier. Take step by step~~ Do something a little bit uncomfortable doing. You will get confident. Move on to the next level. You are a tutor for tutors. ^^

great Video and all very real struggles! One of my greatest mistakes was not getting LMS when I first designed the website. I am still struggling with finding the right solution that can provide a listing of lessons, payments and members area with progress reports. Any ideas??

+Torill Høiby Most have them included these days. I like Zoom.us as you can share your screen and annotate things.
I use Zoom too. What I find particularly useful is the ability to share the control of mouse and keyboard with my student - using the whiteboard, my document or theirs. Being able to share computer audio is very useful too. No more synchronization problems with video and audio exercises.

My mistake was that I didn't inform some of my students that they were hopeless at learning English. It was just flogging a dead horse. Fortunately, they simply slid off. You won't get anything but problems with such students.

Hi! So happy I found your channel! I've been an ESL teacher for quite some time, and have even founded and opened my own school a few years ago here in Korea. But the Corona Virus is forcing a change in the education sector, so I'm pretty motivated to change as well. I'm wondering, how do you get your name "out there" on line? I have students now who come to my school whom I would hope to transition on line, but how do you reach beyond them? Do you sign up with some company, or can you strike out on your own? If so, how do prospective students communicate with you, given that they probably do not speak English very well? Do you target a certain population, like Spanish speakers, Korean speakers etc, and create content for them?

Need some guidance please, I am originally from the UK. currently living in Thailand, I have applied to about 5-6 online teaching companies and keep getting rejected after the demo, my friend has passed and as coaching me, but even though he said I did well, I still got rejected. I also hold a 120 hourTEFAL . Any advise or assistance would be greatly appreciated
