Operation Bolo is really interesting. There are several DCS re-enactments and similar videos on this topic, anyone interested should check them out.

It was pretty much always like that. And the PAVNAF didn't have tactical jammers or interchangeable pods or EC-121s or tankers or SEAD or reconnaissance types either.

They downed 7 out of about 8 or 9 migs that engaged them. The North Vietnamese had a total of 16 MiG 21s. So in one 13 minute engagement the Americans destroyed almost half of the NVAs entire fighter force. And yes, 4 squadrons vs 8 or 9 aircraft. Or do you think war is supposed to be fair?

operation bolo could have been 4 times more effective
1 first wave goes in disguised as f-105 the migs came up and got slapped hard . when the NVAF realised it was a trap they pulled there aircraft and started using sams. that made the yanks retreat
2 thats when the americans should have sent in there wild weasel aircraft and destroy those radars leaving the NVAF unable to launch
3 once radars are destroyed u send in the navy aircraft from the sea ( diversion ) and start bombing airfields . literally force them to keep there heads down
4 at that point the b52 comes into place and just level those airstrips. a series of arklight strikes on every airfield. that way any NVAF aircraft in the air cant land . so either gets shot down or runs to china
5 continuation strikes on infrastructure with mixed fighter wild weasel and strike attacks
i know they did the mission put towards them but it could have been so much bigger

What if Soviet Pilots were involved in Operation Bolo or for the matter semt to fight over North Vietnam like in Korea wouldnt that also have been a challenge even to veterans like Olds? Or if the Soviets surely could have sent more MiG 21s to North Vietnam after Operation Bolo? Compared to an F4 Phatom rhe MiG 21 is surely cheaper? And couldn't Soviet Pilots then take over and challenge US airplanes then to even the odds???

Interestingly, Robin Olds never thought much of Chappie James' flying combat skills. But you know, in our times, speaking on that does not fit the so-called "diversity makes us stronger" fable.
