  • www.footankle.com/children-fee... Does your child have flat feet? Although sometimes a foot that is flatter than normal is nothing to worry about, in other situations flat feet can damage the feet and cause pain, arthritis and other foot problems. Dr. Larry Huppin is a Seattle podiatrist specializing in the foot problems of children and can help you determine if a flat foot in your child is something that you should worry about.
    “Flatfoot” (also known as pes planus) is a condition where the foot collapse to the floor and does not have an arch on the inside. Flat foot is one of the most common problems seen in children. In younger children flat feet are normal - almost all children start off with flat feet. But over the first 6 years of life children develop their normal arch height.
    If your child has flat feet, it is important to differentiate a normal, flexible flatfoot from pathologic conditions.
    If you are in the Seattle area appointments can be made from our website at www.footankle.com/.
    Dr. Larry Huppin practices in Seattle at the Foot & Ankle Center of Washington. One of his specialties is treatment of pediatric foot and ankle conditions. We want to eliminate any pain your child is experiencing and get them back to full activity in the most conservative manner possible. Treatment options include exercise, stretching, physical therapy, prefabricated and custom orthotics, shoe recommendations and more.
    We are located at:
    Foot & Ankle Center of Washington

    My daughter is 8, and I just recently noticed that she has flatfeet. I was seriously concerned in the beginning, but after some more research I think it is just normal for her. I am still having a hard time understanding why she has flat feet, because she is super energetic and good at many sports. She is also very fit and agile. Maybe one of the reason is that she likes to jump from height... For example from top of a slide at the playground that is about 5 ft high.

    I used to have this growing up after many people asked questions about my feet I realized the problem and began exercising and stregthening my feet many times flat feet is due to lack of foot flexing and correct ankle tightening and positioning in the knee and ankles.

      In fact, there are at least 40 causes of flat feet. Some respond to strengthening and some do not. Sometimes having flat feet is a problem and some times it is perfectly normal for that individual. It's great that strengthening might have helped you but that has no bearing on another person's situation.

      That is a ProLab P3 Kiddythotic. Unfortunately that is only available from medical professionals. Although I think that is the best OTC device for children with flat feet you can find some good alternatives that are available online here - I would recommend the PowerStep PowerKids: www.footankle.com/orthotics/off-the-shelf/prefabricated-kids/

    What to do if this flat feet problem does not allow baby to stand well on his feet

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  Před 4 lety

      Talk to your pediatrician first. Some kids just walk later than others. It may not be the flat feet at all. In fact, most babys have flat feet.

      You probably don't need surgery but you probably do need orthotics. Here is some information on orthotics for flat feet. You can show this page to your parents: www.footankle.com/orthotics/condition/flat-feet/

    If a child has “normal” foot structure, no problems with feet at all, do they need an orthotic? Are orthotics for people with foot problems? Do you need orthotics when you are an adult?

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  Před rokem

      Orthotics are designed to reduce forces that cause pain or tissue damage. If a kid (or adult) has no pain or developing deformities then there is likely no need for orthotics. More information on flat feet in kids here:
