  • Howdy! fellow adventurers. There is so much to chronical and share out here. We're going to start trying to post 2 quality episodes a week. In this episode of The Beagle Barge Beagle Adventure, we visit one of the nicest Mississippi river towns we've come across yet (Lansing, Iowa). We also try some fishing--reminding us why we didn't start a fishing channel ;)

    As always I watch your travels and I get to relax for a little while. My day consisted of trying to get my wife dressed and focused to go for treatments she has severe dementia and so everything is a challenge 45 min drive 4 hr treatment 45 min drive home 5 hr trying to get her satisfied witch consist of calming her down and trying to communicate with her. She finally takes a nap and I get to chill out with you and Wavy . Thanks for the distraction. I’ve spent a many a night on two anchors in some rough seas and heavy currents and didn’t sleep a wink. I don't think people traveling on the river is even on their radar. I've always thought it would be cool of we had a canal system like England does with the narrow boats

    • @integr8er66

      @@brentboydston2565 Well the thing is the Mississippi and Missouri and Ohio etc are not like England's canals, they can be very very dangerous and thus fewer people are capable of navigating them. Don't get me wrong, it would be cool, and was that way a 100 years ago, but it obviously wasn't popular enough thus it died.

    For, say, $30-$40 you could buy a nice cover for your scooter. Rain water gets into the switches and wiring connections. That alone causes problems. It hastens the demise of the machinery for no good reason.

    I seen a great idea for boat fenders on a home built fiberglass houseboat on my trip to Louisiana last winter to pick up my boat. They used wide rear ATV tires and put inter tubes in the tires. They drilled holes by the bead to run the rope though. You can add air to keep them from collapsing. I talked to the owner because it was really a nice looking build and They lived on that houseboat on the Bayou full time and some little town along the Bayous have a dock. Some docks has light poles on the docks. He was having the same issue as you. The poles was hitting his roof line. The tubes in the ATV tires solved his problem. Just put air in the tubes. Any ATV shop has a pile of old tires they give away. But you may have to buy the tubes. Just a cool idea I remembered that could help with your lock issue. Some ATV tires are 12-15 inches wide when aired up. I know those big fenders are expensive. Free tires are cheap, and tubes don’t cost much. Just something to think about. I know some locks make you tie off here on the Ohio anyway. Safe travels 🇺🇸⚓️

    Hi just came across your channel. What a wonderful way to travel. I follow a gentleman, Sam Holmes, who sails all over the world.. when he anchors He has an app for his navigation iPad that he draws a area and if his boat position goes out of the area it alarms.. I've seen him use it quite often and has saved him a few times from crashing his sailboat onto the rocks. You may already have this, but thought worth mentioning. GREAT channel; I'm hooked now. For fishing in shallow, light wind and current areas throughout the loop you might want to rig up some type of stake pole system for quickly moving and anchoring without dealing with the actual anchor. Brenton, when our CG rivertender subbed for the USCGC Wyaconda's area of responsibility north of Clinton IA to the Twin Cities; I made it a point to 1. Bring my homebuilt plywood and epoxy skiff (the design of that rowboat is called Whisp by designer Steve Redmond)....2. My Mountain Bike and 3. My ultralight fishing pole & spinning reel and all of my lures that I used in my home waters back in NJ. I fished from the banks, after our work was complete on the river. Places I fished were Fountain City, Lansing and Prescott, Wisconsin. A few others as well, but they do not come to mind right now. I did not fish with any bait, just my trusty Mepps #1 and #2 Aglia spinners. Even the Mepps Comet. No #3's or higher, I figure the Musky boys would use those bigger spinners. Brenton, remembering back some 30 years now, I still recall the great success I had with those spinners, catching both bass and crappie. That backwater slough you and Wavey were anchored in looked like prime bass and crappy waters. Enjoy this upper miss fishing cause once you get down to Clinton or the Quad Cities (and all the way to the bottom, I guess), the river takes on the appearance of coffee with cream and the sports fishiing goes out the window. Catfish and Gar. And I never caught either one!
    And yes, Lansing Iowa is about the prettiest small town you've shown us, so far. Safe travels!

    Keep this type of content coming. We (Me) want more!!!!!!!
    About Fishing-I've caught more fish on nightcrawlers than all other bait combined (natural and artificial). In an unknown area, I always start with a single worm hooked several times on a hook that is a little big for bluegill and a little small for channel cats (my 2 preferred eaters). If the first fish is a cat, stay with a single crawler with a better size hook. If it's a bluegill, used 1/3-1/4 of a worm. I generally do better with no bobber, accepting more snags, but experiment both ways. And experiment with weight, on the bottom, I like egg-shaped slip sinkers that will let the bait move a little. But will also use split-shot (bluegills) and try to use just enough weight. Really like fishing with just a hook and worm if wind and current will allow. The stick bobbers with lead are something new to me and I really like them. If legal, you could also try limb-lines (single hook) tied off to the railing with chicken livers or worms). Keep trying and don't be afraid to try different set-ups.

      @backwatersandbackroads  Před 10 měsíci

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Howdy, your concerns are valid. If you're anchored out, chances are you'd be fine. Those folks (hate to say it) tend to be lazy. Rowing out to victimize you probably wouldn't happen. Keep the doors locked and your personal defense of choice handy. A dog helps too. I hope you do the loop. Keep us posted. In the meantime, come along with us ;)
