The interesting thing is that with both of their backing vocals overlapping, it really does become more like the song implies: an argument with your inner self. This cacophony of voices inside you telling you you'll just mess up again, but you ignore them because you don't care, you're in love.

@@REDACTEDrose184 it's not unusual for a musician or singer / performer, whatever, to make their own version of a song they want to cover. Take Guns 'n' Roses' version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", for example, or, even better: "You were always on my mind" (Brenda Lee, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Pet Shop Boys...).
But as for this Tame Impala song, Rihanna's version isn't really a new version, it's basically the same version. Granted: the instruments (if you can call electronic sounds this way) were recorded again, but everything else is the same: it's a new person singing (Rhianna), but the same old melody and mistakes (pun intended).
I honestly prefer this mashup to each of their versions individually

If you listen to the Rihanna version on the album, you can still hear Kevin singing. I think they literally just turned down the vocals on Tame’s version and Rihanna sang over it.

All the other mashups play them together, or one in left channel one in right, but the swapping back and forth between vocalists really works with how the song is him debating between two sides of himself, his old self cynical of the new direction and insisting it's a poor decision doomed to messy failure and his new self enraptured with it trying to convince the rest of him that it's okay to let loose and accept his feelings because you can't know the outcome unless you try and nothing's every perfect and risk-free, and just because it's not perfect doesn't mean it's not worthwhile.

While Kevin Parker is the musical genius who produced this classic track, Riri brings a sensuality that the track needed. So I prefer Riri's version however absolutely love Tame Impala's music (except the one relased this year :P).

I listen almost exclusively to indie and tbh I'm just impressed that a more mainstream pop artist decided to cover this amazing song and didn't try to change it drastically
