Mistakes Every SOLO Traveler Should Avoid

  • Every person should travel alone at least once in their lives! In this video, I share some of the lessons I've learned from traveling to every country.
There are a ton of little pieces of advice I can give you about solo travel. For example, carry a paper copy of your passport in case you lose it. Bring Tylenol, anti-diarrhea medication etc, with if you get sick because you have to take care of yourself. Don’t walk around with both headphones on at night (or in general) depending on where you are. You always want to stay aware of your surroundings. One of my biggest pet peeves about solo traveling is having to bring your bags with you whenever you go to the bathroom so nothing gets stolen but it’s all worth it in the end because solo travel is one of the best things you ever do for yourself and your personal growth. I wish you all safe travels!!

The "Gut Walk" is incredibly important. The very first time I traveled abroad (and was alone!!!), I felt terrified to leave my room. I'm naturally extroverted, so I was surprised I felt that way. It took me a good 2-3 hours before I had the confidence to go outside and start walking around. That day, I met all of my best and close friends! Forever thankful I had the courage to go out! Since then, I travel by myself all the time. There's nothing quite as nice as knowing you can depend on yourself and see the world on your own 🤗

Difference between a tourist and a explorer is that one watches the new culture, the other one becomes one with the culture. The latter is the most satisfying and also mirrors your point of not calling attention.

I HIGHLY recommend that everyone in high school after they graduate take a gap year. I did it, I left everyone I know here in the US in Philly at 18 to live in Spain where I don't know the language or anyone there. I went there to learn the language and I have no regrets. While living there I did many solo backpacking trips around Europe and the experience I had no university can teach you. The awesome friends I met the confidence I got the appreciation for life was all worth it. After traveling solo I now rather travel solo than with a group, or with friends. I think of it like this once you graduate from high school you really will never have the time in your life to tak a WHOLE year off and do whatever you want. Whether that's traveling. Think about it. If you go to college you're going to be busy studying and will only have the summer to enjoy your time off. Now once you graduate college you're an adult you have a degree and you now need an actual job. Now you're an adult and working and won't have time util your retire to take a full year off and travel or do whatever you want. Why wait till your mid-60s to do that? Why not do it when you're young at 18 19. Now yes, your parents will not like the idea, but you're 18 you can do whatever you want. Even if you take a year off you're not going to be on the streets and lose out on your degree. You still be able to get the degree you want even if you take a year off is not going to affect that at all. If anything it's going to help. I'm going to school for nursing. Yes, I'm behind 1 and a half now, but I can speak Spanish. Now being in the medical field in the US and being able to speak Spanish is so helpful. I think a hospital would take me a student that took longer to get his degree but can speak Spanish than someone that got their degree quicker. At the end of the day, it's your life you take control.
YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS.

I am the same way when it comes to planning trips! I almost always have some set itinerary for what I plan to do in a destination even if it is a place I have been to several times such as Boston. It gives me more control of what I would like to do and an easier way to budget the trip. I did hear from another traveler to also include some room for spontaneity too as things may not always go to plan or something really fun can pop out of nowhere that would be really intriguing. In addition, I also like the tip about telling family or close friends where you are going just in case something happens. I always let my parents know where I plan to go just to be safe!

It may sound obvious for some but not for others - Some tricks
Make sure you get all vaccines/shots if the area you're going to has specific hazards. Some popular ''travel vaccines'' include those to protect against:
      - Hepatitis A
      - Hepatitis B
      - Typhoid and paratyphoid fever
      - Meningococcal disease
      - Yellow Fever
      - Rabies
      Japanese Encephalitis
Make a traveler's medkit that includes:
      - Analgesics (go with 3 types - Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, Acetylsalicylic Acid - also known as Advil, Tylenol and Aspirin)
      - Antihistamine, both cream and pills for mild allergic reactions
      - Immodium, for diarrhea _(also covers Traveler's diarrhea )_
      - Hydrocortisone _(anti itch cream, good for insect bites, skin reactions, etc)_
      - Insect repellent with DEET if in a mosquito/fly heavy zone
      - Sunscreen
      - Antacid _(to relieve heartburn/upset stomach)_
Then there are more specific addons such as
      - Antifungal lotion
      - Antibacterial ointment
      - Antibiotic for severe traveler's diarrhea
      - Antimalarial drugs, if prescribed by your doctor
Read up on health and safety for your destinations. Some destinations recommend
      - Only drinking from sealed water bottles
      - Never eat pre-cut fruits and fresh produce _(buy the fruit or vegetable whole and clean it thoroughly)_
Always wash your hands before eating or touching your face, eyes, etc
*_Always make sure you get enough sleep especially the first nights when changing timezones_* - it can be very taxing on your body, deplete your energy levels and also weaken your immune system.
Drink often - but that's a life trick, not limited to travel! Don't wait to be thirsty to drink, always drink a little throughout the day

Make sure you're bringing enough medication with you for headaches, upset stomach, potential flu. Get vaccinations for areas with viruses that are high risk like malaria, yellow fever etc. Carry a 1st aid kit with you. This is essential!

Some pretty good advice actually. For sure coming from experience.
I visited 30 countries so far, India, South Africa, Morocco as a solo traveller.
I guess as a female you have to be even more cautious.

LOL strange people working as unofficial "taxi drivers" at airports is wild and very much a thing. I had a similar experience in Medellin, Colombia (my favorite place on earth!) and followed this guy who was being really persistent out to his car in a far off spot in the parking lot. It turned out he really was just a dude trying to make money driving people, but it could have ended badly, especially since the airport in Medellin is a looonnnnng drive from the city on top of a mountain. There's also more than one way to get to the airport, as I found out on multiple trips back to Medellin. One time a taxi driver took me a way I'd never been before and we went through an EXTREMELY poor and run down part of town. I was fully prepared to try and jump out the car if I had to because I remember thinking "THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT" LOL. The driver was really nice, though, and started playing Michael Jackson CDs LOL (yes, real CDs). We ended up going on the most scenic drive I've ever been on in my life and avoided most of the traffic.

I have traveled all over the world as well, a couple of times solo. But I can only imagine how much more on guard you have to be if you're a female solo traveler. I have found that many women who fear solo travel but want to see the world join Contiki Tours, where they are joined together as a group and make lifelong friendships through traveling together. But you do lose the freedom of moving where you want at any time, and are on an itinerary. I did it solo and still had a fantastic time. Pros and Cons.

Even in Mexico where I know my way around a late flight cost me money and some misery.
