Yes, I enjoyed that she lets him answer without interrupting or cutting him off. There is a calm spaciousness to the interview. And her questions were good and interesting. Definitely an interview of a non-sound byte, adhd world for sure.

You are spot on. Nowadays the media and its reporters are way too anxious during interviews and they constantly rush them in order to "entertain" the audience. A terrible habit that is now the norm.
Back then, people were genuinely nice, had good manners, and were generally happy. There were no hidden agendas, just a regular interview.
He's the absolute opposite of Tony Manero and that's why he's so electric and magnetic in that role. Still one of the top ten films of the 70s for sure.

I was 6 years old when I first saw this movie and always loved it and the sequel that I especially appreciate as Tony and everyone touched my life then and always will, the soundtracks as well! ❤
It's always a shock, even though it shouldn't be a surprise to us, when actors are very different from their notable character roles in real life :) One couldn't accuse him of simply 'playing himself' as many actors are.

My mother was sitting in the San Luis Obispo, CA train station waiting to pick up my grandmother who was traveling down from Carmel. The station was a small depot. There was only one other person in the depot and it was John Travolta. He introduced himself to my mother and they sat and chatted about this and that and the script he was studying and then my mother showed him pictures of her daughters from her wallet. She said he was very kind and had beautiful blue eyes.

Yeah, that look was verrrry mid 70s. She really has it dialed in. Huge glasses, peasant blouse and wedge haircut. My older sister and her friends all looked like this.
That’s a pageboy haircut.
Wedge looks like a literal wedge where it’s cut short at the nape/base of the neck line and is left longer as you go upwards. You can see a difference in length/the wedge at the nape.
Dorthy Hamill had a wedge cut…rounded shape around face (not curled under) and feathered out at the ends.
Pageboy is rounded cut and curled under with no wedge. Often layered/sheered/textured with shorter lengths on top just near the ends to help curl hair under.
That extended dance scene is magical.
I wish they kept it uncut for the final release.

Great late 1970’s interview. Thanks for posting. This interview took place right when the movie was released in December 1977. I thought the interviewer the woman was very professional and good. She was low key but personable and asked good questions to a young John Travolta. I thought Travolta was authentic and answered the questions in a thoughtful intelligent way.
I completely agree. This was a very good interview with thoughtful questions and answers and everything is focused on his art. All too often today, the interviewers are either trying to be comedians or bordering on the edge of offence with their questions.

It seems like yesterday, when this movie changed my life. I was exactly 19 years old just like the character, and yes, I dressed like this and had a DA haircut. Even the Jewelry. And the platform shoes, until I got my Capezios. I also drank seven and seven and hung around a bunch of crazy friends. And we ate burgers at the same White Castle.
The great times I had, will never be matched by anyone today. I danced all over New York, and New Jersey. I danced in Florida Discos and in Acapulco, Mexico. I was at most of all the top clubs in Manhattan. Clubs like The Fun House, Electric Circus, Adams Apple, The Red Parrot, Limelight, Studio 54, Regines, New York New York, Chevys, Bonds, Magique, Shout, and Roseland. In fact I met Madame Regine the owner of Regines. What a classy woman. She asked me how I liked her place. She just recently passed away.
And one of the owners of the Fun House, who was gay tried to pick me up in Fort Lauderdale. This was the disco that Madonna was dating the DJ. He sent two of his boys to ask me to have a drink with him. When I explained to him that I was straight, he asked me that I was familiar to him. I stated that I went to his club a lot, and that's how he knew me. So what does he do. He tries to set me up on a date with France Joli. You remember her with her hit, Come to Me. Yeah dumb me, I didn't go on the date since I was seeing someone.
But there were other discos in other parts of the city I liked to visit, like Elephas, Lemon Tree, Plaza Suite, Romeo and Juliets, Banana's, L' Amour, The Arena and yes 2001 Odyssey. When I wanted to dance Latin, Side Street in The Bronx and Ochentas in Manhattan were my choices. The Jersey Shore had some nice discos too. Montego Bay, Casablanca, D'Jais, Surf Club, Temptations and The Sundance were my place to go. But I did have a personal favorite in the Bronx, called Strawberries Disco. It became like one of two home discos for me. Everyone knew me here. And yes, I had a girl wipe the sweat off my forehead after dancing. I even had two older nurses both proposed marriage to me. And a big limo one night stopped there and a man asked the coat check lady about me, but I wasn’t there. She told me the next night.
But there were two other areas that I have to mention, since they also had some of the greatest discos. Westchester County and Long Island was rich with discos. Discos like Hoops, 2nd Floor, Fonzies, Lallipop, The Riviera, Peach Trees, Fudgies, January's, Marty and Lenny's, 21 North and The Milky Way In Westchester. And in Long Island, the list was too long for me to list. These were my favorites. Cherry's was like my other home disco. I dated the hottest waitress here, so I knew everyone there. She was my Stephanie. She also wanted to be an actress, and she was some dancer. Her mom was in the TV business as a hair stylist. My first real love. She broke my heart just like in the movie. Also, The Trammps performed there regularly, and were a bunch of nice guys. One New Years Eve, the stage almost collapsed from how crowded it was. I was dancing right next to them.
Other disco's like Uncle Sams, Metro 700, La'tique, Chaz, 231, Zachary's, Channel 80 and my Hampton's favorites La'Plaz and Lemans gave me great memories. And let us not forget about Summers Beach, Hot Dog Beach and Neptune Beach. Nothing better to not only dance at the bar, but bring Pina Colada's to the beach.
There were so many discos in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I had a disco for every night even on Monday. I still remember watching the movie. What a great thing for the young generation, as this movie just pushed young people to dance. There was nothing better than to do the Hustle, with a dance partner, girlfriend or even a stranger that you just met. I remember dancing the Hustle, with two young women at the Copacabana Club at the same time. it seemed like we danced together for years. And I remember like it was yesterday, after we ended our dance to Barry Manilow's Copacabana, how they looked dumbfounded. They asked me who was I. And I stated Tony. We actually got an ovation from the crowd. You will never see that today. I watch young people today, who can't get off their cell phones, and who is just not in good shape for their age. This disturbs me. I would never trade those days with the present. I continued to dance, and was invited on a local dance show on TV, The Soap Factory Dance Show, after being seen by a female employee of the show. She stated her boss, who was the producer, needed to watch me dance, and she later became my dance partner. Unfortunately she hurt her back and couldn't continue. I then became a regular dancer for the show. I was put with the cute twins to dance with. That was in 1978, and I met the likes of Blondie, Musique, Melba Moore, Karen Young, Amii Stewart, Anita Ward, Patrick Hernandez, A young Stephanie Mills, and Peaches and Herb. In fact, CZcams now has some videos of those shows. And in the video of Karen Young singing Hot Shot, I was dancing the hustle, on the left side on the stage with my partner. And in other videos on CZcams I am dancing with the cute twins. What great times.
Even after the show was replaced, I continued to Dance, by going to Fred Astaire Studios, so to learn some dances from the old days. I remember walking up the stairs to the studio, and being met by the most beautiful blonde young lady I had ever seen. And I still remember dancing with her, since she wanted to check out my skills. And my God, we were both made for each other. It was effortless, and she was so beautiful. We had incredible chemistry together. Unfortunate for me it was her last week since she was going to dance in a Broadway Show. But she then introduced me to the owner, in her own right was a super looking blonde older lady. So she wanted to see for herself what her instructor was so excited about. So she wanted me to dance with another instructor, so to see what kind of dancer I was. After my audition, she offered me a contract to be a dance instructor instead, which I had to turn down due to I just bought my own business. So again, I was dancing ballroom, in such places like The Waldorf Astoria, The Playboy Club in Great Gorge, NJ and at The Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami, Florida. The friends that I made because of my dancing, was priceless. Friends from all over............New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Florida, Michigan and Philadelphia. To have the times I had with these great people were incredible.
And yes, my name is really Tony and 100% Italian American. But my family only called me Anthony. And yes, people start identifying me as Tony Manero, after they watched me dance. I would start and the floor would clear for me. And I did win a dance trophy which I still have from a disco. But I would never wear that white suit. And at my wedding, the D.J and band I had, played music from Saturday Night Fever, and I was introduced as Tony, and performed a solo routine in front of 350 guests. I hope this wasn't too long for some, but when I think of those days, it brings a smile to my face. And I wish the young people of today could of had that those great times.
And Thank You Mr. Travolta for doing a great job as Tony Manero. And to the writers who wrote the screenplay which was so strange how it was so similar to myself, and the disco life. And I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful wife Kelly who was one lovely lady. And for your loss of your son. May they both Rest In Peace.🙏🙏🙏

I mean this movie made him a megastar. This was the 4th highest grossing movie of 1977.
IMO "Saturday Night Fever" is one of the best films of the '70s. It conquered the improper stigma of being a "disco movie" and now rightfully is recognized as a very poignant and hardcore New York City drama.
So cool! Saturday Night Fever is one of my top 20 films of all time. A real treat to view an ultra rare alternate take of Travolta's solo dance scene. What a great 1-2-3 punch with Carrie in 1976 then Saturday Night Fever in 1977 then Grease in 1978! Blow Out came out the year I was born in 1981 and that is one of my favorites as well.

Travolta had just lost his love Diana Hyland nine months ago. The scene of him tearing up at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in the movie was his grief caught on film.
Travolta gave an electric performance in this film. He had the talent, look, age, charisma, etc..at the right time. The stars aligned.
And who aligned all those stars? ME!

It's too bad that it was cut down a bit since Paramount didn't want the running time of the film to be slightly over 2 hours long, and yet it's still a marvel that Travolta mastered those moves for the filming of the scene.

On the other hand, "Saturday Night Fever" was filmed from April to July 1977, hitting theaters on December 14, 1977. So happy I found this interview!! I've been a fan of John Travolta since "Welcome back Kotter" and when Saturday Night Fever came out, I was only 11 years old, so I wasn't allowed to see it in the movies until they cut it to a PG rating and they showed it with my ultimate favorite movie "GREASE"!! I'm 56 years old now and when I watch these two iconic movies it always brings a smile to my heart and spring in my step!

This is and WAS our life back in the 70's, nothing like today with your cell phones glued to your eyes while you are driving or doing anything. No computers or the interweb. DISCO was IT!!! and i still love it. Laid back times and nothing to worry about but going out to the discos on Saturday nights.. I mean how do you think they came up with the movie name? Saturday night was Disco Night Period! and going to movies was for Friday nights, i will always remember going to the first showing that night of this movie and dressed in our silky disco shirts and wooden heeled dress shoes. LOL.. how exciting it was going back to see it again a few more times. John always talked like this off set, he's a gentleman and was raised as such. Look at all the hit movie posters, they are still all hits to this date. If i could come back again i would want the 70's forever. Thanks, John for doing this movie and for the memories!
I was 14 when SNF came out. My friends & I have already seen the movie. The 2nd time, we wanted to go see it, but were not allowed to bc we were underage! Lol Everything about the movie brings back so many memories. The music was outstanding & put the Bee Gees on the map. Love John's shyness here!!

My parents love the Bee Gees, and so did I. I had bought their greatest hits album. After 9/11 I couldn't get my mom to turn off the TV. So, I played this CD. Staying Alive was the first song. We lived in the DC Metro area. I went to see my niece at her school, they did a little exercise routine to, you guessed it... Staying Alive. I guess this movie made us all feel like New Yorkers. Maybe it was a more simpler time. But, everyone was thinking about Saturday Night Fever.
Unsung hero of this movie are the human story lines. Table scenes were priceless.
I saw Saturday Night
Fever 4 times on the big screen. It was mesmerizing. Great low-key interview here, showing what a great actor John Travolta is; nothing like Tony Manero, as you'd half expect him to be in person. I remember watching a 'SNF' preview show before the movie's release that featured The Bee Gees, and Andy Gibb singing, 'Thicker Than Water'. They showed that solo dance by Tony and I thought, "Must see!!!"

John’s so nice and what a great talent.
John's screen presence has always been undeniable. Even though he became a huge star thanks to *Saturday Night Fever* I always felt he should've been a bigger star. Like how his star diminished throughout the 80's when in all honesty he should've been one of, if not the biggest star of the 1980's. I enjoy his 80's filmography over his 70's filmography. The depth to films like *Perfect* & *Blowout* are absolutely stellar.

It shot John Travolta to super stardom! Excellent very informative interview. He is able to give every detail to the questions asked. No politics. What a breath of fresh air to the what we have today. Hollywood has become crap now. Pushing immoral objectives. It is a very sad situation.
It's wonderful to see not only a great interview, but the dance sequence in what is clearly a different cut from the final film scene (you can tell from extra flourishes that are present here at particular points in the dance), as well as part of the dance which is unseen in the final cut - the footage of his dance in this interview begins (@5:40) at a point which is not seen in the film because the camera instead focuses on the audience that has gathered around him. I like the moves he is doing at this point and am tantalised by the remaining bit that is not shown. This is gold, he is such a mover and it is great to see the little differences in this footage from the final cut.

I was exactly 11 this day. Couldn't see the movie for obvious reasons, but the buzz of seeing the film clips on Top of the Pops was fantastic! It was a magical time.

This movie was pure magic. The clip at the dinner table, they cut out the best part when the father says take care of his hair I'm gonna go for a walk.

First time seeing this clip they submitted for the interview. What’s so impressive is that it’s a full master shot with no edits! I believe this is a slightly different take showing a couple different moves. Also, Fran Drescher’s Connie is standing slightly different.

One person he doesn't mention helping him learn the dancing was Roy Madrid. He taught John the couples style hustle. After the movie broke Roy did an interview in the San Fernando Valley paper and it made him a celebrity and I got involved in that. I met Roy at Destiny II disco in West LA that became Chippendales. Roy taught me how to teach and I taught auditoriums of people how to do the hustle. We did exhibitions all over and even went to a competition Roy was judging in a tank. It was a wonderful time. The music, discos and meeting friends after hours to have snacks and drinks was so much fun. This movie touched so many people.
