I played a game today in honor of Jervis. Honestly, I need little excuse, as it has been my favorite Sunday afternoon pastime for decades.
Blood Bowl is my absolute favourite game, how irritating it truly is and I love it 🏈

Thank you for DECADES of good times, Mr Johnson! I played Blood Bowl in my teens in the 1990s, and I've gotten back into it in a big way in the past few years. I just turned 40 and am now playing more than ever. Your name is often mentioned with reverence and affection whenever my friend group gathers to play.
What a catch to get Jervis! Blood Bowl is one of my favourite games. I’d love to know his thoughts on the changes they made after he left GW :)
It’s weird how games feed off each other and go full circle. WW2 micro armour games spawned epic in Jervis’ mind. And epic inspired me (decades later) to write a 1/300th WW2 micro armour set of rules “All Hell Let Loose”.

Wonderful interview with a wonderful designer. As a huge fan of Blood Bowl throughout its history getting a glimpse into the background of it was brilliant, just need Marc G, Pete Knifton, Aly Morrison (if he can, think he's still employed by GW?) and Pete Knifton to have a Blood Bowl roundtable
A real coup this. I had noted that Johnson tends to be more reclusive than e.g. Chambers or Priestley. Blood Bowl really is such an achievement.

Jervis! Thank you very much for Blood Bowl, especially Third Edition. Even if the game has changed and evolved, the great foundation is still there and makes it just the best game.
Great interview. Jervis is a hobby hero. Fond memories of 2nd ed blood bowl (amongst many others) with the polystyrene board and his name emblazoned across the box.
3rd edition was the greatest game and I will never forgive you Jervis for that, how inconsiderate of you to make me enjoy the frustration of Blood Bowl so much over the past 30 or so years 😂🏈🤣 Praise Nuffle 😂🎉😢

Fabulous interview and lovely to hear from Jervis. One of my personal favourite designers, in particular for his work around Warhammer Ancient Battles (WAB). I'm also a big fan of Valour and Fortitude.

Great to hear from Jervis! He was probably the first games designer I was consciously aware of thanks to Blood Bowl third edition, and having his photo and comments there in the rule book (with his shades!)
A great interview! Ever since I found your channel I've been hoping you'd talk to Jervis. He really is a legend of Games Workshop, and game design in general.
Two things he said that I really have to agree with: firstly the 3 Ways To Play was a huge step forward for GW and their rule design. I think them dropping it recently is a huge mistake. Secondly, the 2nd edition Chaos codex is excellent and, in my opinion, the best Chaos codex they ever put out up until the 9th edition one.
My Jervis fandom was hand in hand with my Warhammer fandom in the 90's. I read Standard Bearer in White Dwarf first whenever I got the magazine. Thanks for everything, Jervis, especially the Chaos Codex I got in early 1997. It introduced me to my enormous love of Perturabo and the Iron Warriors, which is bigger today than it's ever been.
I'm a Night Lords fan, but otherwise same story. That was indeed a great codex.

Used to love talking to Jervis at Games Days. He was so enthusiastic and so happy to talk about the hobby. Inevitably he would let something "slip" and you would walk away thinking you had just found out something that we weren't meant to know yet.

Literally watching this painting my Blood Bowl goblin team. Played 3rd edition hundreds of times as a kid. Picked it up again 2 years ago and I’m utterly obsessed. Thanks Jervis for all the hours of fun, and all those double skulls to keep me humble!

For requests, it would be really interesting if you could get either some classic Fantasy British Filmmakers or video game designers like Ben Wheatley or Peter Molyneux. I know they are a different kind of Celebrity, but it owuld be very interesting to hear what they had to say, and if they liked miniature board gaming at all when younger!

"Kill your darlings" remains my mantra when I'm writing my own rules, after reading Jervis's article on rules design many moons ago. Thanks Jordan for interviewing this true titan(icus) of the GW hobby.
my earliest joys in the hobby were at the hands of Jervis games. Advanced Heroquest, Space Marine. Nice to hear him talk fondly of Epic Armageddon - the final edition of the system. I only more recently got into that after returning to hobby about 6 years ago. I regard EA as one of the best miniature wargame systems I've played, one of my all time favourites - for the reasons Jervis seems to suggest himself. The man is a legend - the Don of GW for my money. Great interview!

Would have loved to have heard about how GW converted Dungeonquest from the Swedish original into what they released in 1987. Probably not loads to talk about but it’s my favourite GW game and there’s a bit in White Dwarf 95 (I think it is?) where they cover that they’re playtesting it and they had so much fun everyone from around the office started congregating and wanting to play.

5:22 Jervis, if you like RPGs try a game called 'Lancer'.
It's AMAZEBALLS. It's really much more of a wargame as the combat system is so interesting and SO GOOD, and has lots of ideas to pilfer from to use in other games.
There are some great GMs online you can find, which is really good as the game was specifically designed to be played online. Very interesting 21st Century design.
Anyway I'm recommending it to everyone.

Great interview! Jervis is an amazing games designer responsible for my two favorite miniatures games: Epic 40k & AoS. It's great to see the artistry he puts behind his work, and the good attitude he has towards his craft and his time at GW. I really look forward to anything he comes up with next, especially if it's an air combat game...

Correct me if I’m wrong but what I got from this is that Johnson was the one who took over the game design at GW once the OG’s (Priestly, Chambers etc) retired. So AoS and New Age 40K (8th edition onwards) were essentially his ideas? 💀

@Jordellfreshbreeze yes it's pretty flawed overall, but still love it. Have most of that editions miniatures as well.

Ah. Jervis johnson. When i asked him for directions a games day to inquisitor miniatures because i didn't expect him to be so tall, so didn't know who he was. Apologies Jervis (still taller than you though)
Hard to be excited about this when he was very adamant that people who didn't play games his way were doing it wrong.
Of course 6th edition Warhammer Fantasy was the pinnacle of game design.
