  • WHAT WAS ANCIENT EMPIRE OF MALI? (PART 1) | Mali Empire | Sankofa Pan African Series
    The Mali Empire was an empire in West Africa from c. 1235 to 1670. The empire was founded by Sundiata Keita and became renowned for the wealth of its rulers, especially Mansa Musa. At its peak, Mali was the largest empire in West Africa, profoundly and widely influencing the culture of the region through the spread of its language, laws, and customs.
    But what more do we know about this powerful empire? Let discover in this episode as Dr. Bunmi Oyinsan sheds light.
    We are always delighted to hear your thoughts and will respond to them. Please share with friends and don't forget to like.

    Thanks for touching on the Sundiata keita's history. Sundiata is my direct ancestral partrilinial grand father and we still have part in Guinea that we are honored as Mansa or king in mandinka dialect. The place is call Hamana in korosa. That's how I get my last name MANSARAY, which is also call KEITA.

    There is no empire in west Africa that was called Mali but there was a Mandingue empire. Mandingue empire is also a federation of empires in western Africa.
    The word" Mandingue " means union, federation, unification. When the great Soundiata Keita became emperor, he unified all the kingdoms of that part of west Africa and called the new federation Mandi-ngo, Mandi-nka.
    Mandin= gather, bring together, federation
    Ka= of there, from that.
    Ngo= are people who speak the language of that place and Ngo also means " I say".

    Mandinka saga. prophecy of a great leader produced by an "ugly woman". so much gold, it depressed market in Kemet. thank you for making Us aware of this. would be a good movie or mini series to teach Us a slice of Afrikan history. the state of Afrika at that time, the arab infiltration, reflecting on Kemet in the past and what it was then, the search for gold by europeans and subsequent effect of that, even the Mandinka people and maybe showing Alex Haley's relatives and ending it there. think Spike Lee or Tyler Perry would be interested? looking forward to pt. 2

    Very interesting. I hope it’s ok if I just add something that we learned from our griots. We have lit if songs made by griots about the story. The ugly women that the king was to marry was the daughter of a buffalo woman. She had powers . The buffalo woman was mad at her brother who took her part of inheritance , and he took over the leadership of their village. So the sister used to transform herself into buffalo and terrorise the whole village and neighboring villages. Se killed lot of hunters but she finally decided to tell the secret how to defeat to 2 hunters, only for them to take her daughter to the Mande king to marry her. The king was told already by the oracle about the 2 hunters and the uvly girl , so he will marry her( sunjata’mother.). As for the half brother ( dankara touma) , he was told that even if he banned sunjata from the kingdom , soundiata will rule one day. So the half brother who was a weak king sent for a great sorcerer king of sosso ( soumangourou Kanté) to find soundjata and kill him, but soundjata will defeat the sorcerer king and he will be become the king of the Mali empire with the help of his host kingdom which was founded by the sarakolle or soninkes. After he will sign the chart of kurukanfuga ( how to organize the society, by putting some rules in place)....... when you lister. All the griots from Mali, fundation and Gambia tell the story of sunjata when they are praying people from Keita families. When you listen to thee songs , you will hear the story.
