- A business case is often the first project document created by the business analyst. In this video, you will learn how to write a business case that gets approved. A project business case is a pre-project document that is used to justify the approval of a project or initiative. It should be clear, concise, and compelling, and it should outline the benefits of the project, the costs, and the risks.
In this tutorial, you will learn what a business case is and the main components that comprise it, who the primary business case audience is, what the business case best practices are, and we'll also walk through a business case template using a case study project. Common inputs to the business case include the gap analysis and SWOT analysis.

Business Cases are used to validate project benefits, assess solution options, recommend a solution, authorize project initiation, as input for a detailed project charter, and as input for a business requirements document. Some common alternatives for the business case may include a project justification, a project proposal, a feasibility study, a project charter, a scope statement, a cost-benefit analysis, a statement of work (SOW), or a vision statement.

@@thebadoc I do have a question. Is it customary for the business analyst to write the business case? In my previous company, it was done by the PM.
@@masonsingleton3037 I ideally, the ssponsor would write the business case with input from several subject matter experts. From my experience, it's more likely that either the BA or PM writes the business case but this really depends on the organization you work for, the structure of the PMO, and the size of the project. It is also common for the sponsor to submit a business case "outline" and the BA will refine and elaborate on the outline to provide the details required for approval. Here the BA will also collaborate with several others with the right expertise. I hope that helps!

I do have a question for you. My organization doesn't use this document. Is there an equivalent document to the business case?
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate those kind words. In regards to your question, yes there are some equivalent documents tot he business case. Some times you will see a Statement of Work (SOW) that serves as the business case, a project justification, a product vision, or a business case outline. The key thinks to look for is the representation of the business need, objectives, and expected outcomes. This will provide further guidance to downstream BA work.
Ahhhh...yes I see the SOW sometimes. I'll start paying more attention to that document and see how it's created. Wow...what an aha moment. This really helps.

Thank you for your supporting attitude towards newcomers to the field. The video is so helful and easy to understand on the fly but i got a question. I saw a lot of articlers and practiсe where people include cost-benefic analysis in Executive Summary but in the video there is no such thing and they don't include gap analisys either, but tbh i like your version more than others out there because you nailed it with unusual deftness and precision that's why i want to believe you 😇 So, the idea as I got is a business case may vary in format and may not have a golden standard, and it is your role to make it transparent, understandable and appropriate to stakeholders. Am i right?
