    Since the grass clippings are so fine, why not let them fall back into the lawn? Just curious. Here in Orlando, we mow St Augustine at 4" because it grows so fast during summer and return the clippings into the lawn for both water conservation and return the nutrients back into the lawn.

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel Před 6 lety +2

      Everyone including myself do not like the clippings no matter the size on the lawn. They get tracked into the house and look bad after a day or 2.

    • @Sara-L
      @Sara-L Před 6 lety

      I can definitely understand that - when you cut your lawn so short any dead clippings will show through. when people mow 3.5 inches or higher, the clippings aren't that noticeable.

    Great video and great mower Connor. I have one piece of advise for you, for added longevity of your reel and bedknife, I reccomend you contact your local shop (im assuming you know somebody in the industry if you have that machine) and ask them to relief grind the reel for you. typically toro dealers dont do it because toro's grinding machine doesnt offer it. I face and relief grind all my reels and I see much longer life from the bedknife. which is beneficial for someone like you who im assuming again doesnt have a on staff mechanic to grind and reset your reels..just my .02 cents.. awesome video and great stripes.. if you have any questions hit me up.. I maitain a fleet of 30 mowing machines.. mostly reel units. id love to help if I can

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel Před 6 lety

      Cool. I need more people like you who know the machines in my world. The guy I take my machines to is an old Jac guy who worked for them and now has a backyard garage shop with a reel grinder and does small engine work on the side for all brands of golf equipment. He has ground reels for 30 years. When I was there last month to pick up this machine I specifically asked him if he does and spin grind AND a relief grind. He said that he first does the spin grind then he goes back on each blade and does the relief grind. He told me that he did that on this machine. I did not see a defined edge on this reel but he said he did it.
      I just had a comment on this video Toro Greensmaster 1600 czcams.com/video/Oxp7jZH2lIg/video.html that said "Grinding the reel is completely unnecessary" I disagree with this comment. I feel that while a back lap is nice and does work for the short term, it is not a true sharpening. It also wears away the relief cut. Please weigh in on this comment.

    • @Blougheed
      @Blougheed Před 6 lety

      its extremely possible that he did relief cut the reel then. if you say you dont notice a defined edge.. that is usually the sign of a nicely relief-ed reel. Back lapping is ok..ive done it many of times.. alot of the machines we use have a black lap function that back spins the reels. at our shop we use the Foley United model 653 unit. it makes reel grinding very simple. I always prefer to grind over backlapping for that reason.. obviously some people dont have this kind of machine nearby them

  • @adambelfy
    @adambelfy Před 5 lety

    First, awesome job. Have watched A lot of your lawn videos and loved every one of them. Quick question though. When you say bluegrass with an overseer of rye, does that mean you seed BOTH grass types at the same time? Or bluegrass in the spring and rye in the fall?? Just moved to Virginia and am learning more about the “transition” grass zones. Thanks!!

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel Před 5 lety

      This is not so much a transition zone for me. Seeded bluegrass several years ago. Then 2 years ago I overseed with perennial ryegrass. I did this in the fall for 2 years. It is essentially a mix now. What was once an only bluegrass lawn is now a mix.

    Works great! czcams.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.
