Nanaimo is actually situated in the Køppen Csb (warm Mediterranean) climate zone, and the South-Central (eastern) coastline of Vancouver Island enjoys the best/nicest climate above 48° LAT in the entire world. It's a very similar climate to south-central France and/or northern Italy/Croatia. Yes, it rains here, but receives more than 75% of its annual precipitation during the months of NOV thru FEB, with a relatively very dry/sunny 8 month period for the rest of the year. In fact, the summer months are actually borderline arid. Hence the Køppen Csb climate classification. The local fig trees are a clear indicator of this, plus the thriving nearby wine (vineyard) industry... Over the next 3 decades (with the expected climate change) this Csb zone will slowly transition towards a full Køppen Csa (hot Mediterranean) weather pattern, similar to today's Nice, France. Therefore, this region will actually become even more popular as a dynamic tourism/retirement and investment destination. Not to mention the longer growing season and local agricultural benefits. Thus, first and foremost, my main reason for moving here some 20 years ago (as an outdoors, very active, long-distance runner, etc) was the climate, and also because this island region has now become the "Canadian Riviera" 😎🌴⛱☀

Plus, I am a retired geographical-sociology guy....so I am very familiar with the climate-weather similarities here. Many Canucks are simply not aware how much the local micro-climate here resembles the northern Mediterranean region. Sure, the summers are not quite as hot (yet), but in terms of the mid April to Late Sep period, we are actually drier/sunnier than places such as Venice, Zagreb, Milan, and other locations. Plus, nearby Victoria is even drier than places like Barcelona, Rome, and Nice during that same 6 month period. Winters here, are about the same temps as Venice, Italy or Lyon and Toulouse in central-southern France. Don't be surprised, if within about 25 years, or so, that hardy citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges are grown here in this region, especially the Cowichan Valley area. The bottom-line is, that from a climate/weather perspective, south-central eastern Vancouver island is by far the nicest/best place to live in Canada.
I hope your not assuming its warm on the island even in the winter time!!!! That damp air and constant rain beside the ocean and surrounded by mountains makes it bone chilling cold!!! And i grew up in Ontario, where its normal to be -30 in the winter time. Damp air and dry air combined with bright sunlight or not at all makes a hellofva difference. Dont be so naive people!

I personally wear shorts 24/7/364...and don't even own a long pair of trousers or jeans. Only on rare occasion do I ever need to put on my running-tights because of the cold. The winters on VI are very short, we seldom get more than about 10 days during an entire season that one could actually call COLD...I can't remember the last time it was "bone chilling cold" here in Nanaimo, and I run along the harbour-front on my 12K run pretty much every single day of the year. Yes, I have lived in Ontario (12 years) and know what COLD winters are like, and Vancouver Island is absolutely nothing like that, not even on a worst case scenario day or two. There is no comparison at all. Plus, aside the other locations that I mentioned in my posts above, I also grew up in southern England (which also experiences mild winters). Well, the climate on SE Vancouver island is considerably nicer than there. The winters are shorter and we get a LOT more sunshine per year...2,200 hours compared to just 1,674 in London, for example. Also, the flowering seasonal shift is earlier here too...by around the 7th of January, all the early pink Rhododendrons are coming out in bloom and many spring bulbs are already coming up, etc. ...and besides, when I say that VI is very similar to the South of France or Northern Italy, Balkans, etc...during the winter...it's because those locations are just "mild" too. They are not warm during the winter season either. The temps are very similar, hovering around 9-10°C, or sometimes cooler. As always, just keeping it real...

We are first time home buyers and at this point in time we could hardly afford a 1-bedroom in greater Victoria whereas we could buy a 3-bedroom townhouse in Nanaimo. So we are seriously considering moving to Nanaimo early next year. I have no doubt that my Carpentry business will flourish just as it is here in Victoria. This is exactly the kind of info I've been looking for. I'm from the Comox Valley but am currently living in Singapore, where home prices are insane. A small 3 bedroom apartment costs the same as a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in Nanaimo. We stopped by over Christmas to visit family and I'm now seriously considering moving back. The friendly culture and more laid back approach to life is a great bonus.

So any inputs regarding the business opportunities in Nanaimo? I am working in IT product management and business development.
Most people chose to work remotely and live on Vancouver Island. If not nanaimo, there 5 or 6 amazing communities to live in on central Vancouver Island. My brother lives in Kelowna and love it there. But I dislike the extreme cold in the winter and intense heat in the summer. I chose the island life.
