Talented kids, guitarist (Hal-Can) was 16 (there are still some videos of her when she was 12 and a prodigy), bassist was 17 and drummer was 19 (the two are brothers). They're now grown up a bit, Hal--Can is now 21 and is now singing (before they were only instrumentals). There recently signed with SONY (so watch out for blocks). Very excellent and existing musicians, the next future of metal. Japan strikes again.

Hal-Ca got her first guitar when she was 10, and composed Rising Moon only 2 years later at 12. She is purely and simply born to play! As impressive as it is, Rising Moon is still a very straightforward composition compared to Dawn or Museum of Death. Those take the listener on a bonafide journey! Thanks again for discovering this mind-shattering 3 piece!💪🏻🤘🏻

The basic purpose of the 7 string bass is that Miyu (the bassist) can essentially play rhythm guitar when needed on the top 4 strings (top here is in pitch, they are the bottom 4 physically). Any guitarists will recognize the partial Barré chords. Nice reaction. Watch live material: The breadth of the band sound they can generate with a trio is truly amazing. Listen to 'Church' like everyone is saying, you will be impressed. Also, they just (I mean just) released a new EP called Planet of Metal and it is crazy. Super proggy, experimental, fun, and just fantastic in the real sense of that word. Check that out too.

Then as I was standing at the exit of the venue, my brother nodded to my right I looked over and it was Asterism. I got to talk to them for a few minutes, They are amazing people. They are some extremely talented people that were all child prodigies that discovered their love for music early, fortunately for us. Hal-Ca (guitarist) is just so full of energy that I suspect she is hiding a miniature nuclear reactor somewhere, and she really does make an excellent front woman for the band. With seven string bass you typically have two strings below the normal low E and one higher than the upper G. There's many options for tuning them, but one of the more regular ways of tuning one would be F#BEADGC, so you'll have nearly an extra octave below and a fourth above the range of a four string bass.
Extending the range like this also gives you options for guitar-like arpeggio techniques and more chordal stuff, without having to jump around the neck as much and/or smaller stretches involved, though you do need amplification that can handle the extra low end without flubbing out or breaking.

Having a 7 string bass is harder to play, bass strings are more spaced out than guitar string so playing a 7 string bass means you'd need to stretch your hands a lot more if you want to use the other strings you have + you'd have more fretboard surface for you hands to travel + it is way heavier to carry lol, generally people who make the conscious decision of using a 7 or 6 string bass as there main instrument plan on doing solos and play lead parts on it since more strings means an extended range and so you can play higher or lower notes than a a normal bass and so more choices of melodies and techniques and doing so is already hard on bass compared to guitar because of how thick and hard to bend the strings in a bass can be and how much you'd need you hand to move around (bass fretboard is longer than a guitar), it's the reason you'll rarely see someone play anything more than a 5 string bass and be good at it.

They have evolved a lot since then, and in many directions - their most recent work is a concept mini album called "Planet Of Metal" and it's a masterwork (I mean .. .really!) of progressive ... everything: rock, metal, jrock, ambient, jazz, psyche ... 26 minutes of madness by three unleashed virtuosos just playing what they want. Congratulations on finding the best new power trio since (in my opinion) Cream. They are from Fukuoka, Japan, and consist of:
    Haruka Noma, guitars (“HAL-CA”) (23 November, 2002)
Miyu Yoshinaka, bass (12 March, 2002)
Mio Yoshinaka, drums (13 November, 1999)
They started as an all-instrumental band, and have recently begun adding vocals.
They were formed in 2014 when Noma was 11 and the brothers were 12 and 14 respectively. They were all playing at a talent fair for young musicians in their hometown, when one of the music scouts noticed them, had a hunch and suggested they play together. The result was, to say the least, explosive.
Most of their current youtube catalogue is fan-made live video footage, much of it at the Hard Rock Café in Fukuoka. There are also several clips from their tours of the U.S., including stops in Austin, Los Angeles and New York. From the start, they have written most of their own music, covering a wide range of styles.
The brothers bring a lot of jazz and funk ideas into their playing. Miyu plays 4,5 and 7-string basses, which are co-lead instruments in his hands. They are all phenomenal talents, but the big draw has been Noma, known by her first name Haruka or by her stage name Hal-Ca. She has been likened to a reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, with bits of Joe Satriani, Nuno Bettencourt and Akira Takasaki, among others, thrown in. Even in the Japanese scene, with its overload of extraordinarily technical instrumentalists, she stands out. She also writes most of the band’s music.

Haruka is my favorite guitarist in the world. She's 15 here, wrote the song when she was 12.
She's now 21 and believe me, you only experienced a tiny glimpse of what she's capable of 😊
Miyu on bass was 16 and his brother Mio on drums 18 in this video.
You definitely have to watch Dawn, Church, Gunfire or Light in the darkness. Preferably live.
    Thanks 🤘🏻 🙂

former aspiring bassist here, to answer your question:
obviously, 4-str is standard , 5-str if you play a style where you need a little extra range (usually a low B, but sometimes a high C) , and afaic, more than that is just showing off 😂
in the case of 7 strings, that's an extra octave-and-a-quarter , which actually makes more sense once you realize that the 2 brothers actually started out playing as a duo before meeting Hal-ca ; so he was doing double-duty. fyi: if you see him with his 5-str, it means he'll be sweep-picking some arpeggios ; and if he dusts off his 4-str, it means he needs his whammy bar (yes, on a bass ... not too many of those around).
i've watched him be able to play a standard bass line with one hand while _simultaneously_ playing a completely different part with the other hand (which _might_ actually be what you're hearing when you say you're hearing a tracked rhythm guitar ; i could be mistaken about that bit , but i DO know they don't use tracks live, and it still sounds great).
Here's the kicker -- i've seen many live vids of them, and there's not an in-ear to be found. no click-track, nothing -- they just old-school jam it. (only the old-school floor monitors for hearing themselves)
This song is (i believe) is the first song Hal-ca wrote (if i'm wrong, then this was #2 and either _155_ or _Yunagi_ was #1), when she was 11-or-12 (which would account for the simple structure you mentioned).
if you keep following them , you are certainly in for a real treat. i stumbled on these guys last year, and has been the most exciting find for me in over 20 years.

To me, Rising Moon is one of their more average works... They have better ones. And yes, they do it better live!
Hal-Ca also has a great singing voice.

Wait until you see one of their real live performances. 😉The stage presence of all three of them for such a young age is beyond impressive. Of course dear Haruka (stage name Hal-Ca) stands out, but Miyo by her side is in my opinion perhaps the most versatile bass player out there today with that monster of a bass which is a special custom-made model for him by ESP btw.. And his brother Mio on drums is the gravity that keeps these two archangels of metal in front of him from taking off into the infinity of the cosmos.
I can only echo the previous recommendations of 'Church (Live In Studio)', 'Gunfire (Live In Studio)' and then perhaps their most impressive track to date '『DAWN』2019/04/20'. The latter absolutely in this version, from Takako's channel. Yes, it's a fancam with not the best sound, but it beats every other video out there by far, as it was recorded from the front row. It doesn't get any closer and more impressive than this.... But don't forget to strap yourself :) in and just let the last 2 1/2 to 3 minutes play without pause while these 3 take you on a journey to the stars. ✨🔥🤘🏻

This angel is one of the best singers (incredible extremely low vocal, dramatic contralto + polyphonic voice) in the world!
    Diana Ankudinova
I was stunned to find that the first performance (Show "You are Super") I heard was when she was 14!!!!
She's now 20 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English, German, Spanish and Arabic.
The covers she performed on that show are very popular on CZcams. Many CZcamsrs publish reactions on these performances, which include "Oh,Darling" (❗10 y.o.), "California Dreamin' " , "Sweet Dreams" (all 19 y.o.), "Can't Help Falling In Love", "Crow", "Personal Jesus" (all 18 y.o.), "Wicked Game", "Human" (15 y.o.), "Derniere Danse", "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" (14 y.o.), "Take On Me" (17 y.o.) , film soundtrack to Dune, James Bond, Spirit of Baikal (all 20 y.o) and others.

Never mind their ages (they're in their 20s now), Miyu is simply my favourite bassist, Hal-Ca might be my favourite guitarist, and Mio's an incredible drummer too. It's their unique combination of musicianship and soul across the band that gets me. A recommendation not for NittPicc but for anyone who's been impressed by Asterism, go and listen to their latest EP released two days ago, Planet of Metal: czcams.com/video/bWviBodvbvc/video.html

As far as their ages go:
Guitars: Haruka (Hal-Ca) born November 2002.
Bass (he some tracks on a 5 string bass as well, but this is a custom 7-string bass by ESP): Miyu born March 2002.
    Drums: Mio born November 2000.
This track was released in 2018, so I assume Hal-ca was 15-16 when this released, Miyu was probably 16 and Mio was 17-18. But it was most likely on the lower end of that since both Haruka (Hal-ca) and Mio were born at the end of the year. But apparently Haruka wrote this when she was 12. There is footage out there from when they were 12 or so on stage and they were already killing it. I read she only learned to play the guitar from when she was 10 years old, which is nuts if that's true because she was already really good at age 12 going on from the little footage I have seen from around that time. The brothers and Haruka met at a music competition from what I have heard when they were around that age. Their first release is from 2016 (so the youngest were about 14-15).

HAL-CA the guitarist is 15 here ... with brothers Miyu - 16 on bass and Mio - 18 on drums. The band was formed in 2014 and named for an actual "asterism" ... a group of stars ;) .
"HAL-CA ... stop playing with your friends. Come finish packing your lunch and get ready for school :p "
HAL-CA on stage and off stage are very different. On stage she is a monster ... in person she is a humble tiny girl ... almost shy or bashful. Unassuming. I have had short conversations with her on a couple of platforms and she is always very polite and respectful ... but put a guitar in her hands.
Miyu's bass is a custom 7 string made for him. Mio is IMHO the most reserved of the group ... there is a drum cover of "Ghost of Perdition" by Opeth by him ... but it is not here on YT. The band visited us here in the USA last year in a really poorly organized and not well publicized tour. Not their fault at all. As a result they simply played their shows for free because they love to perform and it is about the music ... not the fame or the money it seems. I'll put something special up "somewhere else" from their visit here :) .

The more strings you have, the more sonic range you have. I can’t comment on the physical aspects of it as I’ve never seen a seven string in person, but he’s obviously comfortable with it. Miyu has a few other basses now; the ones I know of are his five string, his new five string with a whammy bar, his four string with a bar, and the seven string. Haruka/HAL-CA is the shortest adult musician I know of at 4’ 8”

I can't believe that Yamaha never gave her a major sponsorship when she was playing that Pacifica model.
She's rocking an ESP guitar now.
There's a lot of great Asterism material to discover.
This is a more classic metal tune.
    Done beautifully, of course.
Hope you'll look into their prog masterpiece EPs 'GUERNICA' and 'GUERNICA + a'.
The 'Church' and 'Museum of Death' tracks are really great.

    Hi, NittPicc! I'm pohojisan from BM-CD. 🤗
Asterism is a band that combines skill, ideas, and creativity that stand out among young, talented Japanese bands. This performance was about six years ago, and guitarist HAL-CA is now 21 years old. Bassist MIYU, now 22, has been playing both 7-string and 5-string bass depending on the song at their most recent shows. MIO (now 24), the drummer, is MIYU's older brother, a remarkably skilled and wise guy who lets HAL-CA and his young brother shine.
At the time of this MV, they were charismatic and popular in the provincial cities of the Kyushu region, but had little name recognition in Tokyo or the rest of Japan. They have since expanded their activities to Tokyo, and although their focus is basically still on being an instrumental band, recently HAL-CA has taken on the challenge of singing vocals, dramatically expanding their range of expression. And of course, at their age, all three have brushed up their technical and musical skills dramatically since the time of this MV.
Moreover, their personalities are completely different from the impression in this video, and they are very honest, pure, polite, and very favorable young people.
As I am 64 years old this year, I can't help but support this kind of band, and I hope you, NittPicc, will continue to follow their growth and support them for a long time to come.
